Iris. I also feel so bad for all the people who have lost everything. There but for the Grace of God go I. How true that is. I did hear the wind is going to decrease s o maybe that will help the firefighters. You need to rest, Iris.
Zetta, I got the stove out of the box and it's smaller than I thought and is metal. I read the instructions and the whole stove gets hot when its on. Can't have that because the cats lay very close your to the one I have (not metal) and even put their feet on it. It doesn't get hot enough to burn them. So will have to take it back to WM. What a mess.
Weather just said we may get 6" of snow here. I really.hope not but the GPs will love it.
Good.night, everyone.

My wife doesn't know her right foot from her left, but she still has her optimistic spirit. I took her and DS to several places they needed to be today. At the end of the day, she complained of the cold, but then said "I'm glad we don't live somewhere else where it's even colder." Her attitude of "it could be worse" helps a lot in a life that isn't always easy.

The winds are down to 15 mph. I went to get the mail and the sky was clear, I could see the moon and a few stars above me. Cowboys from Compton drove with horse trailers to rescue horses. Pres Biden is back in DC and some helicopters are flying.
I'm going to try to rest better tonight.

Iris good to hear things improving a little. Know many are left with great burdens and yes Lorita that is so true.
Carl your wife’s thoughts remind me of the guy who thought it was hard having no shoes til he saw the man with no feet.

The ice and snow is moving in. Still about 60 miles south of us. OKC may be getting some by now.Our County has been added to the storm warning, may get up to 6" of snow..
I'm watching the service for President Carter. All of the living Presidents are in attendance.
Iris, I saw that the winds have greatly diminished, so glad for that. Rest today if you can.
I want to be sure there s water in the water tanks before this begins. Judith, stay in today if you can..

Good morning. Ice ice baby, that's what we are having right now. Tiny little ice pellets have been really coming down all night. It's supposed to turn to snow now, on top of the ice. Ugh. Everything is shut down, including the schools.
Iris the pictures the news has been showing are beyond heartbreaking. I knew you weren't right in that area, but I wondered if your air quality was affecting you at all? Of course the news keeps talking about the celebrities who have lost their homes which frustrates me. Lots of people have lost their homes, not just celebrities. It's devastating for everyone. (I'll climb off my soap box now.)
Carl your wife's spirit has to help you.
David you really won big at bingo. Good for you. I'm sorry your chair has a hole in it. Are they going to get you another chair or repair that one? Either way, I'd hope they do it quickly for you.
I just looked up and the biggest snow flakes I've ever seen are falling. And falling at a good clip too. The quiet of the snow is calling me to watch and reflect.
Let's be safe everyone. We have weather events happening that are affecting many of us.

Pray for all in LA fires

They're coming January 22 to repair it

The weather guessers have upgraded our predicted snow from one inch to five, so I filled the gas tank and bought some fresh groceries. We are up to 30 degrees and may get some more melting this afternoon, just in time to refreeze when the temperature falls and the snow starts this evening. I thought we would get haircuts tomorrow but maybe not.
Eagle, sleet under snow is better than black ice under snow, but not much. Be careful out there.

The ground is completely covered and it's snowing like crazy. Tiny flakes almost like rain. The pond is frozen and now snow covered. I was out cutting ice on the water tanks about 10;30 when I saw the first flake. Got the ice cut and out of the tanks. Thanks, Carl, for the tip about the pitch fork. Lots easier to get the ice out. . Filled them about half full so there would be room for more water later.
Went to the mailbox and got a Christmas card that I sent to my BIL. Girls are standing around the barn and their backs are white.
Called Carol when I came in and it wasn't snowing there but began in a short time. I haven't had breakfast yet, Just juice, so better eat something maybe potato soup and cornbread.
Eagle, how much snow will you all get? I hope we get some big flakes. Stay inside and be warm.

Eagle, the news here is talking about the regular people who are affected, not just the celebrities, although there are many of them and others from the entertainment industry who have losses. Thousands of homes and many businesses have been destroyed or severely damaged. Many power lines are down. People in affected areas have to boil their tap water.
The reason this was so bad: a low pressure system caused the winds to rise to a higher level, when they jumped the mountains they approached speeds of 80-100 mph. At the same time, the area is the driest it's been for over a century, since the late 1800s), after high rainfall the past few years caused lush growth. This combination caused what is called an "atmospheric blow dryer" effect, resulting in this apocalypse. Someone said, this is "the big one" we've been warned about for so many years. We were anticipating a big earthquake, but fire is what we got.
39,000 acres have been burned. This is half the size of Washington DC. Many beachfront houses along Pacific Coast Highway, a main road, are gone.
A few aerial water drops of have been accomplished, but not many. Water supply for firefighting is still low, coming from water tanks trucked in.
The fairgrounds and the Rose Bowl are being used as large animal shelters.
AirBNB and hotels are donating rooms to evacuees for free or at discounted rates. Over 300,000 are under evacuation orders.
Air quality is still bad. In fact, where I live, miles away, the sky is totally gray.
Freeway traffic has been light, people are heeding requests to stay off the roads as much as possible due to need to remove trees and debris and to repair downed power lines on the roads. Even so, accidents are up.
TV and radio transmission towers on Mount Wilson are now threatened. Water drops have been discontinued due to turbulence in the air. If these go out, there will be no TV and no radio from a lot of stations.
A man died with his garden hose in his hand. If you have family or friends in the affected areas, urge them not to try to save anything, just get out! Evacuation orders are still in place in many areas.
After all of this is over, when the rains do come back, mudslides will be a problem. Several people died from a huge mudslide about ten years ago.
I'm having trouble posting, despite my signal strength being strong.

Iris…it is bad….will be for a long time. How can anyone not care.
"Just how bad is the problem? Last year, State Farm, the state's largest insurer, announced it would drop coverage for 30,000 home insurance policies. That included about 1,600—just under 70% of total policyholders—in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood"

Hello Porch Friends.
Lolita. Sorry your stove turned out to be not what you expected. Your cats could very easily get their paws burnt on it, if they streach out far enough. I have a little stove that looks like a fireplace and it puts out a lot of heat and is cool to the touch.
Iris. It's so sad what is happening, sorry your friend was not concerned. It was very nice you have family that were concerned about you. Im sure that made you feel good and not so alone. It is a good idea your wearing a mask when you go outside. Please take care of yourself. It's so sad to think how they are going to rebuild.
It was nice seeing all the presidents at the funeral this morning. The funeral was beautiful.
I got my new glasses this morning, now Ican see real good, it's surprising how much better. There are progressive, and thats going to take some getting used to.
Your all in my prayers. Hugs Zetta

good evening Porch Dwellers.
This picture is on the way home to New Market from Huntland, ahead of the coming snow/ice. Y’all stay safe. Isn’t that a stunningly beautiful sky?

I wish I knew, Zetta. You know I have a Sammy and Lilly, too, mother and son.
The sky is pretty JeriLynn, like it has swirls in it.
Hope you find the remote, Judith. Still snowing here. Three inches so far Girls were coming to the barn when I was last out there running water for them
Iris, they showed aerial views of the fire area. Complete devastation. They said it had burned over 5,000 homes and businesses. What will all those people do? So sorry for them.
Carl, has the snow gotten to you? Looks like it's coming your way.
Sleep well, everyone.

Lorita, these fires might be the straws that broke California's back. So much devastation and loss: the loss of life, the loss of homes, the loss of businesses, the loss of schools, the loss of historical areas, the loss of medical buildings, the loss of government buildings, the loss of recreational park land, the loss of electrical utilities and other infrastructure, the loss of use of hotels and convention centers and the fairgrounds now used as shelters, the loss of show business award shows and sports entertainment that decide to cancel or move to other areas, and so much more. California was already limping along financially before this, being in a huge budget deficit and with insurance companies already having canceled homeowners and business policies. Even higher income people are living paycheck-to-paycheck. I suppose the good news is that FEMA will be sending money.

It's almost unbelievable how much loss there is. . Hard to look at the pictures. The only comparable thing would be prairie fires that happen mostly on pasture land . The losses then are some .structures, grassland and livestock. I think of one prairie fire a few years ago in the Texas and Oklahoma panhandlers when hundreds of cattle died in the fires. Fire is a dangerous thing especially with high winds. It worries me when our winds are high and the grass is dry.
How will all the people whom have lost their homes, everything, recover? It will take years. How can insurance companies refuse to insure homes against fires?
It's still snowing in Oklahoma, heavy in places. Even time I look out the kitchen window there is more snow . The storm chasers are out all over eastern Oklahoma and it's from the Texas line to the Kansas line. Supposed to continue all night. We had about 3" when I was outside about 4:30.
Ron, it looks like you may be getting ice but rain south of you. Be careful. Hopefully, it will stay south.of you, Carl. Judith, how much snow do you have?
Just saw that President Biden became a great grandfather today. There is some good news.
I'm going to bed - sort of tired tonight. Sleep well, everyone.

The fire in LA appears to be similar to what happened to Paradise CA a few years ago. Paradise is rebuilding, from what I have seen on PBS' "Ask This Old House" show. They have done a couple of episodes on how to "fireproof" a house, by doing things like installing screens on vent openings to keep embers out and clearing shrubbery from around the house. The Getty was saved, partly by double wall construction and partly because the staff has been doing their yard work. Paradise is a small town and LA is one of the nation's major cities, but I think the same determination to rebuild can be found in both places. They may not build in mudslide areas in LA, and probably should not, but they can on the flatlands. I wouldn't give up on California just yet.
State Farm has always been aggressive in risk avoidance. They cancelled my parents' auto insurance many years ago for no reason other than they were older people with an older car. I bundle my old car with my house, partly so my insurance company knows they will lose the homeowners policy if they cancel the auto policy. And I have never used State Farm.
I think building codes in fire-prone areas should be written to fireproof the structures, just as there are specific codes in earthquake and hurricane areas. My house has "hurricane clips" to make it much stronger in the event of windstorms. The building codes don't require it, and it made the house somewhat more expensive, but we wanted it. Houses built to standards that reduce the risk of damage should be easier to insure.
Lorita, we are getting heavy snow for the past couple of hours. It is 26 degrees F (at 11:20 PM) so there is no ice under the snow, but the streets will be pretty bad for a couple of days. I plan to stay home and catch up on indoor chores. Glad the pitchfork helps. Be careful out there.

We've had snow off and on all day. Probably 6 inches or so. It's really coming down right now.
Heading to bed. More tomorrow.
Let's everyone be safe.
