Personal Hygeine

My father & his wife are in assisted living & have recently resisted showering. I will be approaching the subject with them, but could use any advice you have on how best to approach. I do not live close enough to be onsite to assist on a regular basis.

My mom does not remember to shower. As part of the help she needed when she moved to Al we requested that they remind her to shower. It’s Tuesday, it’s shower day! They may respond better to Al staff than to you. I can’t even imagine telling my mom she needed to take a shower today. She would tell me it’s non of my #*%# business. So far that seems to be working. Based on other interactions I’ve had with staff I imagine that is all they do. If she starts telling them no, they will probably just say ok. It is assisted living, in my experience the assistance is vey very limited. I’ve been told many times they can’t force her to do anything. Hopefully their assisted living is better. If not it may be time to consider memory care.

the personal hygiene subject is very difficult. My mom also gets pissed at me and my sisters about this too. It’s now to the point I get everything ready and say “you are showering tonight”. How well she does with cleaning herself, I don’t know. I was bathing her for a couple of months but now let her sit in the shower alone while I’m outside the room. She has chronic UTI’s and I know it’s her hygiene. I guess talk with management at the AL place and make sure they r showering at least 2x a week.
