Ron, that's the fried cornbread we made but we had it thick enough to pat out flat in our hand. Good, isn't it.

Zetta, sorry for the foul language. I have to change that ,",i" to an "o" almost every time.Sorry I didn't get that one changed., but...

Carl, thank you for your post. I laughed out loud which I don't often do. That was so cute. . You have such a good sense of humor.

All of us took a nap, then had supper when we woke up. I was watching TV about the plane business. When I worked at the VA we could not accept any gift from a patient, not even a box of candy.

Before the nap I drove down to the mailbox, really to see how the guys were doing. They were almost finished and it looks so much better. Picture how the trees look when a tornado goes through. That is how the trees looked after they sprayed and killed them. They died, rotted and fell over on the fences and ground. Darn electric company - not the one we use. it was actually embarrassing but I couldn't get in touch with them to complain and I couldn't do anything about cleaning it up. It would have cost a fortune - half a mile of downed trees.

No lab work, Iris. It was mostly medicine, exams by Mike and nail trim and ears

They are still working on the gtass. Sort of hate to see the littlee, yellow flowers go but they have to. Did I mention I saw my girls by the fence on my way home. I stopped and talked to them. They stand in the loblolly looking longingly at Darwin's barn. They will miss being in the barn this week.

Do you all know the meaning of a deadman?

Deadman is what you are when you come home drunk with a silk stocking around your neck instead of your necktie. Or it can be the log you bury in the loblolly to tie a rope to because the ground is too soft to hold a stake.

The guys just left. Mowed and weed eated until They ran out of gas. Looks better but still not up to par because of having to mow around daffodils and violets. I am almost giddy because I have grass this year instead of just dirt.

Close, Carl and the log would probably work - the silk stocking would work, too. Anyone else? Think I will go to bed and watch TV a while.Might be there until mid morning tomorrow. Glad today is over. NO scratching for the GPs tonight. Just like a switch has been turned. It wss worth it!

See you all tomorrow. Good night.

Rest well, Lorita. You deserve a rest after today.

The "deadman" log does work. I have used that method to stake tents and tarps on ground too hard to drive stakes into as well as in swampy ground. I never tried the silk stocking thing, which is why I'm still married and breathing.

I'm glad some of you enjoy my sense of humor and the rest of you at least tolerate it. I enjoy writing those little tongue in cheek posts.

The NH was having a circus party when I visited DW today. Ten-foot square circus posters were hung all over, and there had been a pie baking contest. The judging was over when I arrived and they were giving the pie away in little 2-ounce cups. I tried the pecan, the blueberry, and the fresh strawberry, and they were all excellent. There are some really good pastry cooks employed at that place!

Ash Grove is just a nice little town. I stopped at the C-store for a coffee one Saturday and a young man held the door for me. The clerk asked me if I was in town for the city-wide garage sale and seemed genuinely sorry when I told her I was there to visit my wife in the NH. Nice people.

The full moon is up tonight, but it's cloudy and rainy so I can't see it. Glad I looked at it last night. Sleep tight, friends.

Carl, how nice that the nursing home does things like that for the residents I know it makes them and their relatives feel better.

Thanks for reminding me about the full moon. I just got up and went out on the porch to look at it. It is beautiful and so bright. Mint reminded us this morning but I had forgotten. I love to look at the moon light reflecting in the pond. I always called Charles to look at it with me. I still do.

I bet that deadman !og would work. Never tried anything like that

The GPs are glad the day is over and are sleeping quietly. I can't hear them when they walk now because nails are short. I will do mine tomorrow.

    Good night, sleep tight everyone.

Once when I was wilderness camping in the Boundary Waters (Canada/Minnesota) the full moon was reflected on the lake. There was no wind and it was a mirror image without ripples. I can shut my eyes and see it today, 35 years later.

We had a Boy Scout troop with us, including DS. About once a day, I would think "I wish DW was here to see this." And about once a day I would think "I am sure glad DW isn't here to see this."

We went twice, for a week each time. I would give a lot to be able to go again, but wilderness canoeing is not for old men.

Lorita - thanks! I've caught up on my sleep. I hope you're sleeping well right now especially after everything at the vet!

Vet bills, ugh. Our cats were so expensive in their later years. But we want them to be as happy as we can make them. I remember when Gamera was unable to jump up onto the window sill. She'd look at it longingly, and every time I saw her do that I'd pick her up and gently put her on the sill. I'd keep an eye out to see when she'd want to jump down (and then not do it) and then I'd pick her back up and place her on the floor.

hi @blacksparky this is a very welcoming place.

Carl - What did the turkey do? I mean, the turkey is dead and frozen, but the parrot is alive and just a tad chilly. 😈

Nice - about the circus party in the nursing home. That was something I liked about Peggy's memory care facility - they were always having engaging "events" and activities for the residents. Each to their own ability, of course.

I'm not sure I understand what a deadman is even after the discussion (I'm such a Californian, sorry) ….

Of course I'm still up (1:45am my time) - last 45 min of Death Guild (I go virtually, since I can't go in person). I try to arrange my Tuesdays so that I don't have do anything before about 10am.

I read an article on Vanity Fair about Rita Hayworth today. I knew she had Alzheimer's, but I didn't know she had early onset. Very sad. And back then we knew so much less about it than we do today.

    Good morning

Ron I think you are a pretty good cook.

We had a pretty day yesterday. Now looks like there are going to be a lot if clouds for a while. Could not see the moon this morning.

Fixed some chicken yesterday. Hope to make some chicken salad. If anyone would like to share how they make chicken salad, I’m listening. Mine is never as tasty as some I have eaten.

Out the front door this morning. 12 babies total. More rain today. We have 2 days of sunshine predicted for the next week!

Sad news: we got home from the Band Awards Banquet last night to find Pretty Bird had passed away🌈😪. No warning but nobody can remember how old he was. He was part of the package that came with DH.

Running to Walmart for stuff to make for a Church Board meeting this evening. I’ll TTYL

Pretty Bird coming to get his head pets. I’m the only one who could touch him. He bit anyone else who tried. Last week he got to spend the day on the patio with Speck watching the barn swallows and hummingbirds. Now he’s flying high and free 🌈.

Morning, JeriLynn, sorry to hear about Pretty Bird. He is flying high and free now. I know he will be missed. The little geese are so cute. I guess my geese didn't have little ones or at least haven't seen them.

Gave GPs their Amox and Prednisone with another Amoxicilin this evening. I give those wrapped in cheese The others hidden in their food. Later they get Glucosamine ,vitamin and pain pill with their food. I made the chart to make sure I don't miss something. Getting the liquid Probiotics down Max is a problem. Zetta, I will give it with just a bit of the cat soup.

I need to get out some summer gowns today. I had left one out but it has scratchy lace and bothers me. Also with temps around 90 need to put away winter things and get out summer ones.

Mint, sorry I can't help because I have never made chicken salad or eaten it. I bet someone will have a good recipe though.

I pigged out yesterday so will need to get back on the wagon today. Keeping chocolate marbled.brioche around is dangerous but it is so good with just a bit of peach preserves on it..

Enjoy the day. Eagle, you have a hot one on tap too. Be careful.

Well my neurosurgeon appointment didn't go well! Surgery with him was my only options. I ask him since the right side of my diaphragm was paralyzed after disk replacement in the 70s, what if the left side was paralyzed if I went ahead with the surgery. He said that I would have to have a trach or respiratory. So, after hearing that, surgery is out. I called my nurse and asked about acupuncture at the VA, she is checking with community care.

    Mint,

I bake/roast chicken boneless, skinless breast. Shred, dukes mayo, celery, red onion, 1 can small mandarin oranges, sliced green seedless grapes, sliced almonds. Green onion scallions for garnish. No added salt. Black pepper depending on who’s eating with us. Served on croissants with strawberries, other fresh fruits on the side; crackers if someone wants, usually Ritz or Townhouse. Amount of mayo varies depending on how much chicken I make.

And depending on who’s eating, I might use a creamy poppyseed dressing instead of mayo

Early bone density this morning and then a stop at Uptown grocers, The selections weere staggering but no Dutched Cocoa. Maybe Whole foods will have it. Did get some fried catfish for $2 a lb. It is delish! Also bought anything that looked good. It was fun.

Ron…that is not wonderful news. Have you considered getting a second opinion at the VA near where you will be moving?

Carl…you are very funny…keep it coming.

    Baby geese….happiness.

Deadman: There is.one about five feet west of the corral and another at the NE corner. Why, I don't know but there was a reason. These are iron, shaped like a T, buried deeply in the ground with 8-10" sticking out of the ground. Darwin tried to pull the west one out with his huge John Deere, but couldn't so no telling how deep it's buried. Like Carl said, must have been to.hold something stable, maybe another corral 300 years ago. We will never know.

Ron, sorry about the news. I worked with a doctor for years who had a trach, probably because of throat cancer of some type. I could understand him perfectly on the dicta phone or dictating verbally. Not many could but I think I could because I wasn't concentrating on it too much. He was a great man and doctor, didn't phase him one bit. But I understand how you feel.

He is a cutie pie, JeriLynn. Have fun!

Ron, I'm sorry to hear that. I don't like the idea of surgery, and I sure wouldn't do it in your shoes.

Baby birds are fun to watch. I watched a duck teaching her ducklings to fly one evening. She lined them up at one end of the pond and headed down the pond into the wind, flapping her wings and rising half out of the water. The ducklings followed suit. Then they circled to the head of the pond and did it again. I guess the ducklings were getting stronger as well as learning what to do.

How sweet that must have been, Carl. We have watched a mother barn swallow coaxing her baby to.fledge. Animal and.bird moms take care of those bsbies. Nature is wonderful and amazing.

I think I have posted this before-: my daddy cut a tire in half round wise and put water in it. He had put duck eggs under a hen and the baby ducks had hatched. He took them out by the tire and the ducklings got into the water and started to swim. The mother hen was beside herself, scared for.those babies and kept trying to get them to get out of the water until, I guess, she decided it was safe. Fun to watch.

That's funny, Lorita. I'm sure that hen was just as distressed as my father was when I mentioned I was considering law school. Like the hen, he didn't want me in that environment.

Nature is often beautiful and sometimes funny. I watched a deer eating acorns once while a squirrel hopped around and fussed. There was a whole forest of red oaks, but the squirrel thought they were all his. Of course, the deer ignored the squirrel as if he didn't exist.

I pulled some weeds and deadheaded some iris and peonies this afternoon, filled the birdbath, then just sat in the shade and watched the breeze move the trees around. Very restful. I'll bet I sleep well tonight, as I did last night. Unless thunder wakes me. We have a chance of isolated thunderstorms tonight after midnight.

Carl, that deer was eating the squirrels nuts he wanted to save for winter. That was cute. We have deer around and used to see them in the pastures. Not many squirrels, guess that's why I like Rusty.

Sounds like you had a restful afternoon. Sleep well, my friend.

    Good night, everyone, sleep tight.

I got a lot of work done today, which is good. I like being productive. We're planning a trip to Charleston, SC for later this month. It wasn't on the radar until today. My s.o.'s mom had a root canal and has to go back for a check in a few weeks, so someone needs to be there. My.so.'s brother is there now keeping us informed. Not looking forward to the schlep, but it'll be good to see her. I already know that I'll be baking some chocolate chip cookies the day before because they're her favorites. 🙂

JeriLynn - I love your photos. Pretty Bird sure looks like a cockatiel. My parents had one for years. He and my dad got along really well, and often when I came to their house, I'd hear my dad's potty mouth coming out of the bird's mouth. I'm so sorry that Pretty Bird passed away, but like you say, now he's flying free and wild.

I love all the geese too. And your little guy is a cutie.

P.S. I still have a few of my Hot Wheels and Matchbox cars.

jfkoc - Catfish! Another thing I really like but haven't had in waaaaaay too long. Bone density tests are coming up for me in a few months too.

Lorita - I'm sorry everybody has to take antibiotics. And prednisone is really hard too. I had to give one of my cats prednisone and it was so difficult getting her to take it. However, I have opposable thumbs and she didn't, so I always won.

    Good morning

JeriLynn, I'm sorry about Pretty Bird. Bet you had fun with your great grandson. He is a cutie.

Mint, how is your garden going? Are you growing everything in grow bags this year?

Much yard work to do before it gets hot later today. I have patches of "icky grass" in my lawn. I don't know what kind it is, and I really don't care - but I know it doesn't look good and I know I can't let it take over the lawn. So have begun digging it out. What a job that is. I have places where I can obtain some good grass, in other areas, and I then replace it with the good stuff and hope it takes. In the garden, the zinnias and four o' clocks I planted are up, stargazers and peony are up and I have a few things I bought at the garden center that are doing well. I have a few more things to get. I want to take a division of the two peonies on my mom and dad's grave. Mom planted them there when Dad died in 1977. She passed away in 2017. I'll do that when I go put flowers on the graves for Memorial Day.

Good morning all. It's Day 2 of a dreary 6-day stretch here. Yuck.

Lorita— I'm glad you and the dogs survived the appointment. That sounds like an absolute ordeal. My St. Bernard loved going to the vet. On the occasions when he'd elope he'd go to the office on his own. They'd ply him with treats and call us to come get him.

I'm enjoying the OK vocabulary lessons.

Beth— My evil SIL used to fix DH mush whenever we came to visit them. For some reason she thought it was his favorite; it wasn't. I thought it was pretty OK with real maple syrup or even butter, salt and pepper. But then, I have never met a carb I didn't like.

Carl— Dad's MCF had all manner of goings on. They had a weekly take-out lunch that might be pizza, hoagies, Chinese food or McDonald's, a weekly lunch outing and a monthly family & friends themed party. They had hoe-downs, luaus, picnics, tailgating, etc. Dad's favorite was the wedding reception— a couple of the ladies wore their actual dresses or veils and there was a cake and DJ.

Was your canoe trip to Northern Tier? DS's troop used to go there every couple of years. DS skipped that for BSA Sea Base tall ship adventure that got swapped out for a luxury catamaran last minute. His favorite part was poking around a junk yard on one of the out islands. Weird kid.

When I was a baby/toddler, my grandfather had a parrot that he "inherited" from his business partner. Grandpa had bought the beach house from his widow, and I guess the bird conveyed with it. He lived on a perch on the far end of the kitchen. He had a fowl mouth. "Son-of-a-bitch" and "Have a drink, Norman" were his signature moves. He got re-homed by my grandmother under the guise of protecting her grandchildren. He was still swearing with that family when I was a teenager.

Zetta— I got an early morning giggle out of Lorita's typo as well.

Ron— I am sorry you didn't get the answer you wanted from the surgeon. I hope you find something to improve this situation for you.

Gothic G— I hear you on the cost of cats. Mom spent about $2400 during that last 6 weeks of Sugar's life. X-rays, bloodwork, ultrasounds, EKGs, consults and no good outcome. It was sad, she'd been a feisty girl. Heights were her thing, too. The days she arrived at mom's she immediately leapt onto a counter and then the tops of the 42" kitchen cabinets. By those last days she would loaf to drink water.

DS still has his Matchbox/Hot Wheel cars. I often slip one into his basket or stocking at holidays if I find something interesting. This Easter I found the car he came home from the hospital in which he got a kick out of.

Jerilynn— I'm sorry about Pretty Bird. Your great-grand is adorable. I bet he had a blast at your place.

Judith— I hope your DEXA results were good.

Mint— It sounds like you're getting a lot done. The chicken said sounds awesome. My mom used to add cooked chicken or turkey to a basic Waldorf salad which was pretty good.

    __________________________________________________________________________________________________

Things are OK here. Once I calmed down about mom's high heel antics, I was able to talk rationally with her about how foolish and disrespectful her choice was. She's so ridiculously focused on her damned Keflex while actively courting a broken hip and the life-altering consequences involved.

I'm 2 weeks into the splint with 2 to go. I hope. It's very inconvenient. I'm able to do more with it, but everything seems to take twice as long. Meal prep is hard— I can't effectively chop or slice and cleaning left-handed is not my super power. And forget gardening. I'm going to have to pick up pre-potted things for my front door and skip anything else. Eh, the deer would probably eat it, so what the hey.

I have managed to get some cleaning and purging done. Between all mom's hospitalizations, appointments, and the holidays, I've not been able to tear into real cleaning. DS helped me move furniture and I'm slowly getting there. I hadn't realized how annoyed I have been by the tasks I haven't gotten to. I feel better already.

Today, I'm meeting bestie to hand off the crib mattresses for her daughter's baby shower. BFF's former sister-in-law are arranging the shower and they've chosen a restaurant that doesn't really have space to display the bulkier gifts. It's a display shower which is new-to-me as a concept. One brings one's gifts unwrapped so folks can admire (or judge) at their leisure. The mom-to-be doesn't open them. I need to sort out a way to display the clothing I bought so it looks festive but can be seen. Maybe I'll buy a couple little basket organizers. I have to figure out something festive to wear. The split limits my sartorial options.

    Be well.

Beth, it sounds like you are way ahead of me. I bought my plants last weekend but during the next two weeks there’s several nights where they’re giving it into 40s so I usually try not to plant until the nights for the next two weeks in the 50s. I get tired of babysitting the plants, but if you put them out then a lot of times the cooler weather really sets them back so that’s just the way I do.
i’m going to plant all my tomatoes in bags the herbs I’m not sure whether I’m gonna put them in bags or in ground. It kind of depends on space. I bought the bubblegum supertinias and that’s all I’m putting out front because as you know, they’re very low maintenance. I do have some perennials out there and I see some volunteer sunflowers up and they’re easy so I’ll leave them alone. In the spot that I call my flower bed now I’m just going to plant mainly seeds of sunflowers and zinnias, but I do have some lantana I bought and some pineapple sage that I bought.

My grass is terrible but my philosophy is like a guy I worked with as long as it’s green I don’t care. I had been doing pretty well with it, but last two summers have gotten very dry toward the last half and I couldn’t even put the stuff that I normally put on it down. It needs rain after you put it down.
I can’t do all that work you do. My left upper hip lower back bother me too much. I can only work short periods of time anymore.

it’s nice that you’re still getting to enjoy a lot of it

Morning, pretty day in store, but will be 92 or ,93, the record for this date is 93. Possible severe storms this weekend.

A neighbor passed away early yesterday. I didn't know her but I remember talking to her on the phone years ago. She and her son are friends of Darwin. I have only seen him once but he said to call it I needed help.

I believe his mother, who was 96,married someone I had a crush on when I was around 6. The family lived across the road from us. I believe my sister knew her. Same last name. I called him.last night to offer my condolences and he told me the funeral will be Friday in a little country cemetery. He told me how to get there but still not sure. Darwin wants to go so guess I'll go and take him. The best I can tell from the internet it's only about five miles from here. Darwin will talk to Ronnie today and maybe find out.

The GPs are sound asleep so better go and get their Prednisone and antibiotic to them. I wrap them in cheese, the other meds I hide in their food. Same with Max and his probiotic.

Hope everyone is well today. HB, I can only imagine how hard it is to do things with the splint.
