Eagle, like you I used to work outside for hours without a problem. Not any more. I see things I would like to do so I but after a !little while I have to quit. Guess that comes with age but I have become a procrastinator. All those years of getting reports done on time and keeping with a staff of social workers or a doctor or two was enough. Most everything can wait. Things are just harder when we get older, too. I remember now about the tree falling on Gov. Abbott. See, the memories begin.to go, too.It also seems like the changes that are happening makes things harder. This change in Seats is ridiculous. It's like.no one knows what the others are doing and it just makes it harder for the consumer.

We had a shower about an hour ago but most of the rain is still north.of us. I don't think there are any eggs or little birds. I was just too late in getting the crash pad out there but I had no idea they would fall out. There are dozens of barn swallows around Darwin' s house. He only has one tree in his yard and no others nearby but the little birds are flying everywhere.

HB, I hope your mother is well today. That was quite a walk for her. You said you thought she and I are about the same age. I was 83 about three weeks ago -how old is she? Hard to believe I'm this age. Seems like I just retired a few months ago at 52 but it wss 30 years ago. I have been retired almost as long as I worked!

.I.haven't heard anything about the tragedy in Texas this morning. I doubt any more survivors will be found.. So awfully sad. I'll stop now and watch some.news. I did get the trash together to take down tomorrow and got rid of a lot of address labels.

Lorita, I just scroll down until I find the group. It moves down when there are more recent posts on other threads, but I have no problem finding it.

I freeze corn on the cob by shucking it, washing it, and bagging it. I put the frozen ears in boiling water and cook it until it's done, just as I cook fresh corn except it takes a minute or so longer, and it tastes just like fresh corn. I buy fresh corn every July from teenagers who raise it on the family farm for their spending money, so it's fresh picked that morning. They don't use pesticides, so shucking it before freezing means I can release the corn worms into the wild instead of freezing them and having to deal with them when I'm ready to eat. The kids sell corn by the dozen, but they put 15-16 ears in the bag to make up for small, immature ears and any loss due to worms.

I took DS to buy jeans and underwear this morning and bought him breakfast at the diner. He ordered BBQ ribs and made a real mess of it, but I don't care about things like that anymore.

At some point, I learned to not try to arrange transportation for my mother. I think it was the time we were walking into a store and three store employees were wrestling with a rather large customer (shoplifter?) in the entrance and she walked straight toward the brawl as if nothing was happening. She was in her late 80's and had gotten so accustomed to having a "keeper" as she called it that her street sense had atrophied.

Ron, that front porch picture is lovely. I can feel the "75 degrees and a breeze" just looking at it. Add a cup of coffee and it' perfect.

All I have heard about the Texas floods is that they are expecting more rain and possibly more flooding, and that FEMA fired a bunch of call center workers the day after the flood. The president said no one else would do what he had done for the flood victims, and I believe him.

Judith, hope you're feeling still better today. Radar looks like you have Heavy rain with more coming. Flood watch in effect for a lot of Oklahoma. We had a good shower this morning and it's dark now. Take care. Do you know how your caladiums are doing? Mine are gorgeous. I could have used half the bulbs I bought.

I have a Royal Empress tree that is about four feet tall and the grasshoppers are eating it and Roses of Sharon. We're getting thunder now. Beth, are the floods near you?

Judith, I just read,(missed it somehow) about your doctors visit. Don't recognize MVVP but glad your doctor is monitoring things. What about your hands freezing? Arthritis?

JeriLynn — If left to my own devices I'd stay up until 2 or 3am every night and then sleep until 11am. But sigh, the world doesn't work that way, and so I'm usually up by 9am.

Thanks for the tips on freezing corn (and thanks to the two of you too, Carl and Lorita). We're at peak corn season right now, and you can only eat so much of it, so it would be great to freeze some for the winter.

HB - airports and airlines have been a nightmare ever since the TSA was invented, but has gotten worse since COVID, imo. We don't fly anywhere near as often as we used to. For us it's pretty much Seattle to Charleston and back, and we —- endure.

I'm sorry your mom's Uber trip went sideways, but yay for your mom for being able to walk that distance!

Ron - I love your photo. I can imagine sitting on that porch with a glass of iced tea (unsweetened) 🙂

Over on my side of the porch we've got lots of sun! It's 84 degrees and quite pleasant outside. Everything is so green. It's the time of year where you think 'why wouldn't everyone want to live here?', and then you remember 'oh yeah, the darkness and 8 months of rain.'

My s.o.'s brother and his family are coming up for a visit this Thursday and staying through the weekend, so we're prepping and cleaning. It's mostly clutter that's built up over the last couple of months, nothing too strenuous, but it still needs to be done. So we're doing it. I took a break just now to see what's happening on the porch and out in the world, and munching some cherries while I read and type. Back to it in just a few.

Judith, what happened to your hand?

The nest is on the porch light on the porch ceiling so nothing could have gotten to it. I think it wss probably just too.hot. Maybe next year.

You must be getting the wrong variety of sweet corn. We raised mostly Candy Corn. Yellow kernels with a few white ones. and very sweet. Fort Gibson has lots of sweet corn but Carol said a lot of it has been flooded out this year. If you could see a truck selling sweet corn it would be better and fresher than you can get in a store.

. GG, when I was growing up we didn't have air conditioning so it wss hot in the house. After supper we would sit on the front porch and talk. I miss doing that now. TV and air conditioning has taken that away for the most part. I still enjoying sitting out there when it's cool watching the. girls.

Almost time for bed - missed my nap today so will say Good Night.

    Good morning!

It’s peacefully quiet right now because the 6 year old is still sleeping 🤪 We went out for a pizza buffet yesterday (it was awful but SHE loved it) and played with Barbie dolls until bedtime. I woke up in the middle of the night thinking “what is this underneath me?”. It was the 6 year old 🤣. My back is not happy this morning but my heart is.

Good morning, I went to my first Missouri arena football game in Springfield last night, and enjoyed myself. Only problem was the ruptured disk in my neck kept telling me to stop looking from one side to the other. On the way home, right before getting to the house, 6 🦌 🦌 🦌 🦌 🦌 🦌 was out in the road looking at us like they owned it, didn't take them long to realize that they should leave.

Grandson had some friends over and it was 2am before I was able to sleep. A bunch of 16 year old don't realize old men need their beauty sleep. Be glad to have my camper set up where I don't have that problem.

This afternoon we will be going to the new superman movie, its been over 40 years since I've been to a movie.

    Good morning all.

Ron— Does your turkey "talk turkey"? The song of their tribe can be alarming if you don't know what it is. Do you find your breathing better out in the country? Mom also swore her breathing was best when she was living on the Eastern shore of MD where is quite rural until you hit the beach.

Lorita— Mom is a few years older. She is 87 and her crazy sister will be 90 this fall.

Judith— In a rare role reversal, I had to google the acronyms you used. Did they not culture your urine sample? A tremor and you didn't notice? Mom's got pretty consistent before she really recognized it. Her gets really bad when she's on IV steroids; there have been times I've had to feed her because of the trembling but it always fades as the dose wears off. Hers is a benign essential tremor mostly of her hands; her sister has it as well and her head/voice are impacted which she finds upsetting. It does run in their family; I don't have one yet and would prefer to skip it.

Gothic G— The TSA nonsense is just performative theater. I don't feel any safer. At least they're letting us keep our shoes on.

Carl— Your son had ribs for breakfast? Excellent choice.

My mom's become more wary with age. Growing up, I never lived in a house where doors were locked. Even the house I live in now, was never locked until I bought it. Mom wasn't even sure where the house keys were; didn't matter really. When I had to replace my lockset on my old house after a bad flood, I swapped out hers at this house and their home in MD with the same lock so my keys got me into all 3. Now that she's living alone, the place is locked up tight. When I suggested she open windows when her A/C died, she looked at me in horror and said she would never do such a thing. Seriously girl? You raised us with open windows in our rooms in a MCM rancher. Her neighborhood is pretty safe— it's gated and the police station is a couple hundred yards away.

Jerilynn— Pizza Buffet has got to be a real comedown from your cooking. But it's nice to eat something you didn't prepare. Even better when you don't need to clean it up.

Ron— Sounds like you're being kept busy. TIL ("today I learned", @jfkoc) the

actor who plays Superman was a member of the Summer Stage Theater Camp with my godchild.

And the site closed my post for me. I hope it shows so this continuation makes sense.

Since I attended all of My godchild's plays whether she was starring or in the ensemble, I have seen "Superman" as a teen. My bestie told me this, and then in her gossipy "theater-mom" way, she said he wasn't very good. She felt he was picked because he's "a handsome face". LOL. Madam, the man got into Julliard, the world begs to differ. What is it about theater-moms that they're so bitchy?

    ______________________________________________________________________________________

I suspect folks favor the corn they're used to. I recall my MIL offering me a cob of the fresh Indiana corn the family was raving about when I first visited them as DH's girlfriend. They were really waxing about it and how they were certain it was far superior to the "east coast" and "city" corn I've had before. They evidently had a ridiculous idea that the east coast is 100% covered in Macadam. Having cut my teeth on the iconic Silver Queen of The Garden State and "native corn" off the trucks in MA, I was very disappointed. Later, in private, DH asked me what I thought of the corn (as he'd enjoyed both Jersey and "native corn" in Boston as a student). I just said, where I come from, we hang that kind on doors as a fall decoration.

DH has a friend from France. When he'd come to visit, I'd always make a nice steak dinner with corn-on-the-cob as a joke. He always enjoyed it; he'd go home and tell his wife Harshed fed him animal fodder as the French don't eat corn as a rule. It's pig food.

Godchild and her babies were discharged yesterday. Bestie went over and was horrified to discover they'd not set up the bassinets and found the cats sleeping in the new cribs.

I deferred the Costco run until today. DS picked up a shift, so DH will have to be my mule. The list has expanded since I put it down yesterday.

    Have a nice day.

Corn…OK, I will try to find a corn truck. I do know that the growing soil is important. The best corn I ever had was at a corn fest in Wisconsin. You got into a big circle…got an ear of corn…ate it on route to the next stop which was a beer. Second best was Boulder, Co.

Culture…nope. I was not there long enough. A culture takes 1-3 days

    Tremor…nope…did not notice

Ron… be certain to add railings to those steps!!!

Corn is pig food in the Ozarks too, but we take our cut first. Sweet corn, corn meal, several gallons of corn squeezin's, and the livestock get what's left.

A friend told me Vietnamese farmers grow peanuts for their pigs and found it pretty funny when the round-eyed soldiers ate them by the handful. As the postman said, "To each his zone."

You all know there are different kinds of corn. People eat mostly sweet corn but there is also field corn which is not sweet. This kind is what is fed to animals. But people can also eat field corn, just not as sweet as sweet corn.

We used to raise field corn. I remember Charles and I picking the corn and putting the ears into the wagon pulled by a tractor. You have never lived until you have been cut by a corn leaf ,- ,just like a paper cut.

Then you have popcorn. Raised and picked just like field corn. You pick sweet corn while the kernels are filled with a.milky substance. The other two aren't picked until the corn stalks have turned brown and the corn kernals.are hard.

We used to have a corn sheller. You shucked the dried corn and put the ear down in the hole in the sheller and turned the crank or handle. The corn ear turned around as it was shelled and the kernels fell into a container. Of course you could also shell it by hand. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

I remember eating field corn when I was a boy, bought from a neighbor who grew acres of it. When we grew our own it was sweet corn, with green beans climbing the stalks. Corn leaves cut, all right, and the salty sweat stings the cuts because no breeze at all penetrates the corn rows and it is really hot.

The sweet corn I buy from the teenagers is the sweet variety with yellow kernels and white kernels. Frozen corn on the cob from the supermarket is good too, but I like to buy from the kids.

Much better and fresher and helps pays the farmer for his work.

What I just wrote brought back a bad memory. In the fall of 1960, after the corn had been picked and put into the corn crib (a room in the barn where we kept the corn until winter), our big, red, three story barn caught on fire and burned. I still remember seeing the outline of the ears of corn burning that were against the outside of the barn as it burned.

Daddy and a neighbor cleared the area and built a bigger, one story sheet Iron barn. I still remember so much about that red barn. I would help daddy haul in the small bales of hay. He would get them up to the window/ door of the third floor and I would pull them across the wooden floor and then we would stack them. I remember know slick and shiny the floor was after dragging the gay across it. Also how cool it was up there with wind.blowing through the.north and south doors.

So many memories I have of growing up here on the farm. No brothers so I tried to help daddy as much as I could and enjoyed every minute of it.

I'll be back later, but just a couple of words about corn.

I never knew there were so many different varieties, I guess I never thought all that much about it. I'm not sure what kind I'm eating, but it's sweet.

Way back in the day, when I was in high school …. we had a summer band program (all three of us kids were in band), and one year we had two exchange students from England come stay with us. My mom decided to make something American for them, and one of the food items was corn on the cob. Our English friends had no idea what to do with it. My mom said "pick it up and eat it", and she demonstrated. They were really unsure, and slowly picked up the corn to eat it. One of them said "how barbaric". So funny. I'll never forget that.

Judith— Both times mom was in the hospital (2 different hospitals, btw) with an UTI, they did a quick test and culture. The first time it came back the day she was discharged, the second time she was home and the result was in her e-chart/PCP office called to let her know.

She almost always gets a blood culture done in the ED as well.

Usually if a UTI is suspected a.urinalysis is done p!us a culture and sensitivity to determine which bacteria is causing the problem. This done they can decide which antibiotic to use to treat it. Usually takes a day or more to grow the culture.

Just looked out the window and saw our resident roadrunner sitting on top of the yard fence. Hadn't seen him for a while. Glad he's still around. Maybe he will eat some grasshoppers!

I read that the young roadrunners eat insects, but the adults hunt lizards, snakes, mice, and smaller birds, and also eat fruits and seeds. Your roadrunner might eat some grasshoppers, though, since they are plentiful. Most opportunistic predators eat what's most easy to catch.

We used to have a roadrunner on our property on Tablerock Lake. Once DW's younger sister, a teenager at the time, was driving the jeep and the roadrunner hopped into the passenger seat. Scared SIL but didn't hurt her of course, just catching a ride. To SIL, it looked like the deadly raptor that climbed into the jeep in "Jurassic Park."

Carl, that Would have scared me, too. Hadn't thought about it but they do sort of resemble raptors. I see him from time to time. Really hope there is another one around close for him. I watched several Walking with Dinosaur shows and Jurassic Park this past week. Google said dinosaurs disappeared 65 million years before man was here. The.bones they were digging up dated 100-130 million years ago. That must have been one big asteroid that hit the earth.

I have no idea why any UTI was suspected except the very high blood pressure. I am just glad they checked and all seems well now. Perhaps they did a culture and sent the results to my PCP.

I do not think that I have ever stepped foot on a farm. Our garden was filled with beautiful flowers. Now that does not mean that I have never tried to grow a tomato….three times…not one tomato. In New Mexico I grew a pepper plant…1 pepper. One year Martha Stewart showed the world how to grow pole beans…not one been grew for me.

I can, however, make a wonderful French bread, beef bourguignon, bouche de noel and chocolate sauce upon request…lol

Jurassic Park was really scary as was Jaws!

Noone (except maybe Martha Stewart) is good at everything. I am the world's worst fisherman but am a fair hunter and gardener. My mother could grow things by accident. She threw out some spoiled cherry tomatoes by tossing them onto a rock pile at the edge of the garden and picked cherry tomatoes from that rock pile for several years. No watering, no fertilizer, no weeding. They just grew from seed.

"Jaws" and "Jurassic Park" were scary and so was "The Ghost and the Darkness". "The Silence of the Lambs" was possibly the scariest movie I ever saw. Humans at their worst are more frightening to me than sharks, lions, or dinosaurs, maybe because they are more dangerous.

I think it has stopped raining but the sun is down and I'm not certain. Either way, I'm in for the night. Good night, friends.

I was telling my s.o. all about the different kinds of corn. I was sure he'd know all about the different varieties, but he didn't, so we spent about a half hour on wikipedia looking up all of the different kinds of corn. We looked up all of the kinds of corn that all of you mentioned - all good to know.

All of you with your green thumbs! I'm so jealous. My thumb is black, or at least a very dark shade of charcoal.

I was thinking about "what's the scariest movie I ever saw?" and was having a hard time. Books are scarier than movies (to me). I thought Stephen King's "It" was pretty scary, but the movie was kind of meh. I thought Hellraiser was pretty scary with the cenobites and Pinhead.

One of my close friends who was staying with us after he got back from the Peace Corp, watched Paranormal Activity (a found footage movie) and when we got back home from a weekend away, he told me he hadn't slept at all the night before because of the movie. He wanted us to watch it with him, so we did. It was pretty creepy, but not that scary. But it was creepy.

Jurassic Park annoyed me. If I had become a paleontologist instead of an attorney, I would have been studying dromaeosaurs, which is the family that Velociraptor belongs to. I was always interested in whether that line of dinos were warm or cold-blooded. Anyway, an ex-boyfriend dragged me off to see Jurassic Park with him and I was horrified by all of the inaccurate info. it just made me sad.

I hope all of you are sleeping well!

    good morning

Same here Lorita, I loved helping my dad. Some of my favorite memories are helping my dad pick corn by hand before we had a corn picker and getting to go places with him in his pick up. He was the one who encouraged me, despite his problems knew he loved me.

It seems anytime anything goes wrong with an older person, they check for an UTI. I know they do that with my mom every time and she has always had one . It seems it shows up in many odd ways in older people.

Seems it will continue to be cloudy here, damp and muggy.
