GG, Benign Positional Vertigo (BPV) is a condition in which some little crystals in the inner ear get out of place and the world whirls around you like the scene in Gravity in which Sandra Bullock pinwheels in space until George Clooney catches her and takes her back to the space shuttle. The Epley maneuver involves lying on your back and turning in a certain direction to put the crystals back in place. BPV won't kill you, but it can make you dizzy enough to throw up your socks. 🤢

It was hot here yesterday, upper 90s and quite humid. The male half of my housecleaning team had symptoms that sound like heat exhaustion, and they didn't come as scheduled. I'll bet a lot of people who work in the heat are ill tonight. The body just can't cool when the humidity is high and the temperature is above 100.

Morning, those were the good old days, Iris. I wish they were back.but never will be. Everything was much slower and I dare to say people were happier.

I started a grocery delivery list three days ago and have been adding and deleting since. I had it scheduled for delivery between 8 and 10 this morning. But something went awry. I woke up at 7 and checked and it was almost here. Had to.hurry and get presentable before they came and just as I was brushing my hair the driveway alarm went off. She was here! Just as well because it was fairly cool with a good breeze. Got things put away and now it's done. Somehow I.ordered sugar free Pepsi instead of the regular kind. Don't know.if I can drink them but don't need them anyway.

Girls were scattered in four pastures and as they came to the barn each one stopped by for a cool.drink(had topped off the tank earlier). I realized I haven't seen Billy lately so in the morning while they're still out grazing I need to.go.check on him. If it was only my girls in the barn I would go out and check but I noticed there is a new bull here so will wait. I saw a couple.of cows still in the west pasture so went out and opened two gates and c!osed one so they could come through, otherwise they have to.go all the way around. Got. back to the house and remembered Chewy order is coming today so went back out and reversed what I had done. Don't want them to.leave the stuff at the first gate. Then saw one of the girls coming to the barn. Amazing how much cooler it is in the shady yard than out in the sun.

Carl. I haven't used my oven all summer. I have a couple.of muffin pans I.can use in the microwave so tomorrow I want to.bake some muffins and take them, one of the pans and a cake mix over to Darwin and Donna. She loves sweets and so does he.. This way they can have muffins in two and one half minutes without using their oven. Might make a couple for me, too.

Enjoy your day and try to stay cool. Be back later..

Question: have any of you ever used a cake mix that was past it's Best By date? I read it's okay if not molded but might need to add additional leavening. .But, somewhere in the dark recesses of my mind I remember reading that a man died after eating some cake made from a mix that was outdated..Anyone ever hear tha?.I have fresh ones so probably should throw the others away.

Beth…I want your garage and the little white car!

My "other" children are here from Italy so the rumicube will be busy.

Nice car, Beth. What is it, a Lexus?

I have never had a box of old cake mix. I have always bought one box at a time, and most of them didn't make it to the pantry before hitting the oven.

I bought a box of Angel Food cake mix once. It produced a better cake than one from scratch. I will buy a box of Gheridelli brownie mix and use part strong coffee as part of the liquid.

You are a lucky man, Ron. Now aren't you glad you moved to Missouri? I see Steak N Shake hasn't changed much. I worked for them in the summer I was 15, selling burgers for 31 cents. You couldn't buy the pickle for that price now.

It's 100 degrees on the asphalt today, and the man selling produce in the parking lot is as red as his Chief's T-shirt. He and others have coveted my paper "Panama" hat. I bought a bag of tomatoes, then washed the car so it won't be dusty and daubed with bird droppings when I take my niece to lunch tomorrow.

I saw on TV that a canyon in LA is on fire, and firefighters are battling it in protective gear and 100+ heat. I am not going to complain about a single thing.

Being near relatives is, I think, a blessing. My two grandsons are within a mile of me and drop in frequently.

Daughter is in Ojai right now. hopefully the fires and smoke do not go west.

How can you tell that is a Steak and Shake? They are in St Louis where I always get chile 5 way.

Beth your little car is as cute as a bug's ear. I bet it will be fun to drive.

Ron, your grandson is a handsome fella. I know you are enjoying being with your grandkids.

I just came in from spending 45 minutes in the pastures looking for Billy. Realized I had not seen him.lately. Couldn't locate him with the herd but did see a cow with one of her eyes popped way out. Got home and called Mike to tell him. He said there is pinkeye in all of his pastures. He is putting out minerals with antibiotics in it for the pinkeye. We had pinkeye in our cows years ago. Bad stuff. Charles and two neighbors medicated the girls but some lost their sight.

He said a couple of mornings ago when he was putting out minerals at the MH he saw Billy sticking his head out of our storage building up there. The door is gone so he went in probably to get away from flies. I drove up there, walked over close to the building and called hjm. He came to the door and looked at me... We had a little conversation. I was happy to see him and I think the feeling was mutual. There are a couple of bulls with the girls and I suspect getting away from them.is another reason he's up there. He has minerals close by and the pond is not too far. He has grass so he's okay. I just couldn't wait until morning to find him and know he's okay. I think it's nice that Mike knows who Billy is. I think he pulled him and I know he banded him when we discovered he only had vision in one eye.

I can rest tonight knowing he's okay so will say good night. Sleep tight.

Carl, the moon is lovely. When we had a full moon I would always call Charles to come out on the porch to.look at it.

I went to bed and started thinking about Billy. Mike had said he just stuck his head out of the building and that is what he did when I went up to see him. A.great big limb had fallen in front of the building and the more I thought about it the more worried I.got thinking maybe he couldn't get out and was in there without feed or water. So, you know what I did- got my shoes on and drove up there -didn't even take my.gun, just a sorting stick. He wasn't in there -the limb wasn't blocking the door, just a bit of it higher up over the door. Made it back to the pickup without tripping over something and started to turn around. There was a hayring with hay in it where I turned. Didn't think about it until I.got stuck in the loose hay around the ring but I.guess with all the rain we had a while back it had saturated the hay deep.down. Thought I might have to sleep in the PU but finally.got out by rocking back and forth. Thank goodness the PU. Is a 3/4 ton diesel and has a lot of power. Didn't even take time to.put it in 4WD. Didn't see anything of Billy but know he is grazing somewhere. Now I'm home wide awake.but contented to know he is out of the building and okay.

Sorry about the long paragraph, just couldn't find a place to break it. Good.night, again.

Carl - I guess I do know what BPV and the Epley maneuver is - I just didn't know that's what they were called. I remember my mom doing the Epley maneuver on occasion. It seemed pretty uncomfortable.

Beth - your car is super cute. However — I have a looooonng way to go before our garage looks like yours.

Lorita - I've never used a cake mix beyond the sell by date. Sometimes I'll use stuff if it's only a few months past, but after that, nope, I don't use it.

Judith - Ghirardelli brownie mix - yes, yes, yes! The double chocolate one (the one with the chips). So good.

We just got back home from an attempt to see an aurora - all the numbers were quite good, so we thought we had a good chance. We managed to see a very faded, washed out one, but the low clouds and the full (or almost full) moon made viewing quite difficult. I never really think about how bad light pollution really is until I'm out trying to see something (like an aurora) and have to compete with all the light. I know the light pollution causes harm to nocturnal animals too - like nighttime pollinators, etc.

    Good morning,

Beth, I love that car and I covet your sparkling clean garage. You should see mine.

We finished loading up the apartment contents yesterday and even transported a few furniture pieces for the remaining sister/brother-in-law to their home. You are right HB, it was sad, but we managed to help somehow, I think.. From clearing out the contents of this lady's house before her move to IL I had saved some of her beautiful bed linens (pillow shams) to use in my guest room. I took a picture of that bed (it belonged to my grandparents) and shared it with her sisters and explained that room in my house is filled with objects holding memories of the important people in my life. While I had never met this lady, this was the second time her life path had crossed mine. Our clothing and decorating styles are very similar. And then; I found it. As I was packing up the clothing from the closet, there was a beautiful (vintage) wedding dress! They had missed it while doing their initial clear out. I walked to the living room with that dress and the sister dissolved in my arms. We talked about how the "business" of death leaves little time initially for grieving, how important that work is. So, while the past two days were exhausting, somehow, I think we were able to help this family in more important ways. I'm tired this morning, but I feel peaceful.

Today will bring the challenge of stuffing the remaining contents of the trailer into my garage. I'm not sure it's all going to fit. Oh well, it's too early in the morning and still dark so I'll think about that later. And I probably need to check my pantry for expired cake mix.

Lorita, I'm glad you found Billy. I bet he was glad to hear your voice. And I'm not surprised you got out of bed to go check on him again. I will refrain from lecturing about the dangers. But next time, please take your cell phone and your weapon. Was it dark when you went out there? None of my nightgowns have pockets so that presents a problem when you crawl out of bed to go out to the pasture. I'm smiling.

Ron, those are great pictures of some good-looking Grandkids. How blessed you are.

Carl, chocolate malts from the Steak and Shake are the best!

Good morning. It's almost 6 here and just getting light— a sign that summer is winding down.

Ron— It's nice you're grandchildren are so close now. They're cute kids; I love DGS's "leg day" band and your DGD is an exceptionally pretty girl.

My DH would envy you the lunch at Steak'n'Shake. The intense love of that place one vestige of his midwest upbringing that remains. I would never say no to their shoestring fries.

LOL, Steak'n'Shake is how DH discovered his lactose intolerance. On a visit to see his mom in Indianapolis when DS was a toddler, he bought milk shakes every afternoon to try to put some weight on her. A few days in her started have intense GI pain which worsened. His brother, an ER doc, assumed it to be a gall bladder attack and said he could refer for surgery or he could head home and take care of it there.

Brother loaded him up with enough fentanyl to make it home, I packed the car and we headed off for Philly 669 miles away. I had a tire blowout on I-70 and managed to pull into a rest stop. I had a full sized spare, but I had a DH too stoned to look after himself much less a toddler. A young couple, both theology students from out hometown, changed the tire for me while I kept DS and DH from wandering into traffic. The wife shared that she'd just found out they had a baby on the way. I have never let my DH forget that he let a pregnant woman change his tire because he was "gassy".

Lady Z— I hope your picky daughter finds a place that appeals. It can be hard when an entire office moves into a place and all need to find homes in the area.

Carl— It's great you have a group of like-minded guys. There's a diner near where mom's hair salon and pharmacy are that has a number of similar guys meeting up regularly.

Beth— That is a very sweet ride you have there. Your garage looks like something out of one of those garage make-over ads.

I have had the itchy eyelid thing. In my case it was caused by a skin care product that was too harsh for my sensitive skin. A little OTC hydrocortisone cream calmed it down quickly. I hope that works for you as well. One thing that was suggested to me was to make sure you change your pillowcase frequently until it's cleared.

Gothic G— I kind of like the whole idea of a mother-of-the-bride in a flapper costume. Most MOB dresses are kind of a predictable uniform anyway, so this is much cooler.

I'm down with the Ghirardelli Brown Mix, too. I always have the Costco club pack on hand in case I need a batch for some reason. I'd hadn't thought of adding strong coffee instead of water.

Lorita— I wouldn't use out-of-code cake mix unless it was really close. Not only does the leavening lose strength with age, the other ingredients, especially any fats, will oxidize with time. Once I unwittingly used a box of Jiffy Corn Muffin mix at mom's not realizing it was expired. The resulting cornbread was nasty— no rise and kind of bitter tasting.

Judith— I hope your world stops spinning.

    _____________________________________________________________________________

I had a mom-day yesterday. She "needed" a haircut and a pedi ahead of her trip next week. Mom called me Wednesday evening in a lather about when her next cut was. She started this by asking me if I had taken her appointment card. Red flag for me. I didn't have anything in my phone and then recalled that last appointment she didn't schedule because she was sure of her travel dates. Turns out that was the case, but they were able to take her yesterday. She's a 20-minute wash, cut and blowout which is crazy. Her stylist does a wonderful job TBH. And quickly.

While she did that, I liaised with her pharmacist to make sure she'd have all the meds she needed for the trip. He was getting ready to make up her packets but was short her AREDS-2. They've been ordered and she'll get 4 weeks of meds delivered on Monday in tidy little pill packets.

She picked a French pedi rather than her usual bright color. I can't say I like the outcome but she's happy with it. The edges look really white to me rather than subtler white with OPI Bubbly Bath over. While I waited, I was chatting with 2 ladies my age who were picking their colors. The one with the tattoo sleeve when for royal purple on her toes and neon orange on her fingers. The other lady was deciding between white and bright yellow. LOL, they told me my mani looked "clean and healthy". I guess I'm not very festive.

DH called me. The guys who did our driveways (seal coat mom and new asphalt us) stopped by to schedule sealing. DH said he "gingerly" asked "if mom was still with us". DH confirmed that she was out getting a pedi for an upcoming trip and he was pleased to hear it. He got a real kick out of her.

She's mostly set for her girls' weekend Aug 14th-17th. I'll pack her bag on Wednesday. The trip has gone completely sideways. They added niece's BFF to the mix; this young woman has a terminal diagnosis and has always been even more extra than mom. Niece did a birthday trip with this girl and spent the 4 days venting to me by text about what a PITA she was being. Niece paid for everything and BFF is the type who orders multiple cocktails and top of the menu.

Niece says mom invited her; mom insists niece did. I suspect Kendal Jackson and/or Kim Crawford had a hand in this. Since the trip went sideways, niece included her younger sister, whose feelings were hurt by not being included in the birthday trip. My mom can only handle her in microdoses for a whole lot of reasons. I can't wait to meet up with my older niece for a postmortem after the trip. Mom will pay for her share plus a little extra, but I suspect niece will be funding the bulk of the trip for the other 2 as they're both chronically broke. Mom resents them being included; she sees this as "her trip" and she resents the extra cost for 2 people she'd rather not spend a lot of time with. I encouraged her to pull out of the trip so niece could cancel, but she refused. This is going to be the stuff of family legend.

Morning, I have blephatitis and my doctor told me to use a little.pad called So Soft, I think. His nurse said baby shampoo is good, too. There is an ad on TV for something else.

I'm about ready to take a nap -not much sleep.last night.. I did have my cellphone with me last night. Girls changed pastures this morning so were up in that area around Billy. Told Darwin what I did this morning when he called and he.said he would have done the same thing.

Going to be uber hot this weekend so not planning on being out much. I need to get diesel.in the PU and.not sure I have enough to get to the station. May have to go get a can in the car Monday.

I threw the cake mixes away but had one that was past best by date by a month or so and a brownie mix that is ok. How those things accumulate I don't know, guess getting one for something, then not using it, etc. If I make a cake I would have to eat all of it so not a good idea. Muffins are okay. Haven't made pumpkin spice muffins in a.long time. Might try them.in the microwave. Going to finish my.hot tea and take a nap.

    Everyone, stay cool this weekend.

GG, Sometimes if you use a camera to look at an aurora, the camera picks up what the naked eye cannot. By the way, there is to be a major meteor shower this coming week: I believe the 12th and 13th there could be 100 meteors per hour. Please google for more info on when and where to view if interested.

All of us took a nap this morning. Will do it again later.

JeriLynn, I didn't wear my gown. In the summer I wear patio dresses most of the time so put that on. It has two big pockets. I also put on my .medical guardian so was safe.

The moon was full but it was Dark. I remember when I was in high school two friends stayed ovenight during a full moon. We walked all over the pasture that night without a flashlight. I hear coyotes going out to hunt every night but didn't see any last night. Cougars have been seen not far south of us and last year Mike found a calf hanging over a limb in a big tree so there was one around here then

I know Billy was glad to hear me. I have talked to.him all his life.I remember standing over him.one night when Mike and I discovered he had limited vision. He is really big like his dad who weighed 2200 lbs. And holds his head kind of over to one side when you talk to him.He is a gentle soul. Going to finish My Pepsi and rake a nap. Girls are in the barn and have fresh water. Stormy is antsy this morning. Keeps going to the window and barking.

@jfkoc Mom's looks like Bubble Bath with a thick White-Out edge. BUbble Bath is the default "French" base for lighter tones at this place.

My current go-to is Zoya Naked Manicure Perfector in pink. Zoya is a Big10 Free line of polishes. It also comes in a "plus" version that has nail treatment and ridge filler.

You must have a steadier hand than I have.

I don't think it's wrong. I've seen all manner of color iterations— it's part of the fun.

TBH, I'm not sure why mom's pedi looks weird to me. Maybe they cut her nails super short. Maybe the tips were too thin or thick.

Mom tries to be super fashionable, but sometimes she's just a bit off. Like she buys cute wide leg crops and then wears them with socks and lace-up oxfords when she has the perfect ballet flats and espadrilles in her closet. My niece will see her next week and weigh in. She's the final arbiter of cool girl vs try hard.
