Morning, Iris, how long will You be in Seattle? Did you get completely rested after your last trip? Doesn't seem like it was yoo long ago, but times goes so fast.

Going to.be really hot today without much wind but when I went out about 8 it was fairly nice. Girls all came to the barn by way of a cool.dip in the pond, then a drink of fresh, clean water. The ground in the plant pots seemed a.bit damp but gave them a little more.

Have a bit of a headache this morning, maybe from all the stress yesterday. Do not want to.go through that again. You all have a good day and stay cool.

Zetta you are on the move, lady

Iris, I cannot remember if it was Anchorage or Fairbanks. Laugh out loud Iris I have my own issues too. I was just saying looking at her picture overwhelms me. Used to that would not have, I would’ve looked at it as interesting to go through, not anymore.

Good morning all. It should be sunny and warm today. I should be weeding, but we have a couple cooler days early next week with rain when it'll be so much easier. Plus, I'm enjoying hanging out here and DH just printed me a Saturday NYT crossword. I do like a nice themeless Saturday challenge.

Lady Z— I'm glad your DD found a new home with an easy commute for SIL that meets her other criteria. Real estate is a challenge right now in a lot of places.

Are the cats and Molly good travelers? My last cat was, mom's old cat was stellar (he was a feline snowbird for years) but he last one was a big ol' "nope!" if a carrier was involved.

Lorita— Good on you avoiding scams. I find the only area code 202 calls I get are automated calls for my U.S. Representative and the state's Democratic Senator. They leave voice mails, so I can listen at my leisure.

Gothic G— That picture makes my eyes feel gritty. Yikes.

I have a story about things finding their way into luggage I'll share later.

Iris— That bath looks amazing. Luck you to get such an upgrade. One of DH's guilty pleasures is watching a content creator named Hannah Rickets who does vlogs about life in London mostly. Her current Friday theme is staying overnight at London's iconic 5-star hotels— last night was The Goring Hotel (where the current Princess of Wales stayed with family the night before her wedding). Hannah's room wasn't nearly as nice as your upgrade room— lucky you.

Have a terrific trip. LOL, I can't imagine finding something orange in my closet. I would have to shop to pull that off.

Carl— No Spam at the luau?

I'm with you on the appliances. They age like lettuce.

    _________________________________________________________________________________________

The observations coming from the trip have been interesting.

Evidently niece's BFF was "having feelings" (Girl is 45 and has metastatic— brain and skin— triple negative breast cancer with a dire prognosis) so room assignments were changed last minute. Mom and her less favored niece are together in the beach front room. Mom believes friend is being possessive of preferred niece and that mom's not getting time with her and is being left to her own devices. Preferred niece was tired (she works really hard and was up late with upset friend) and took a nap. I suggested mom and roomie walk into town to look at shops. Preferred niece reports mom is not good at articulating her wants/needs and is being passive-aggressive (which tracks).

Speaking of things finding their way into luggage. After I left mom's on Wednesday, after packing her a neat capsule wardrobe, she tossed a LE navy striped beach coverup into her suitcase. FTR, this is my coverup; mom insisted I keep a suit and stuff at her house in case I want to go swimming. This long coverup, with pockets matches my navy swim separates— the navy striped top and navy striped tote bag with doubles as my ED go-bag. Plus, it doubles as a robe when I travel or for hospital visits. I did not know this when we were talking initially.

She called me last night from her locked bathroom to grouse so I tried to move her along to a happier topic. At which points she says she have friend one of her coverups "because it doesn't fit her" and how it fits friend so so well and how friend is so happy to have it. I packed her a few SPF coverup tees including a navy with colored strips and it was a while before it dawned on me what she did. I was irrationally angry with her over this. Niece and I were texting this morning and when I shared the story she replied "Classic".

They meet up with my mom's frenemy-sister tonight for dinner. I hope that goes well. And if not, I hope niece's reports are at least amusing.

    Be safe out there today.

No Spam at the luau. Senior Age tries to serve healthy food, not "meat" that is 90% fat and 5% salt. l liked Spam when I was a child, but we never had it at home. My father grew up on a farm and never ate processed food of any kind until he was in the Army. After the war, he was amazed that civilians willingly ate Spam. Spam is quite popular in Hawaii and in England, I am told, the locals having developed a taste for it during WW II. My father had his fill of it. After his walking tour of France and Germany in 1944 - 1945, he never again wanted to sleep in a tent, shoot a rifle, stand in line, or eat Spam.

I doubt that Spam is affordable on the senior center's budget anyway. They provide meals that are as healthy as they can provide without spending more than $4 per meal and without offering things old people won't eat. It's better than Depression food, but it's apt to have one protein, one veggie, and two carbs instead of one protein, two veggies, and one carb. It gets us out of the house and away from eating alone though, and that is a bigger health benefit than one more veggie.

Speaking of veggies, I bought more tomatoes and cantaloupe from the vendor of Amish produce. I bought extra cantaloupes for the neighbors who have given me things. My car smells like cantaloupe, so I hope they like cantaloupe.

Iris, thank you for the advice on volunteering and on evicting ants from my kitchen. I hope you have a wonderful trip. One nice thing about a cruise, you only unpack once after you board ship. It's like staying in a nice hotel, with scenery that changes before your eyes. ⚓️

Iris…I think that os pretty much what is in the Torro bait traps. Little to no toxiticy (sp). Seven is especially toxic to bees and toxic to humans through the skin.

Carl…my swing-away (hand dependent) is still working…lol. Bonus. it lives in a drawer and not on the counter!

    Lorita…the scams are really slick.

I hope none of you are affected by Hurricane Erin. It is in the Leeward Islands, traveling north, and intensifying at a record rate. It went from 75 mph winds to 160 mph in 24 hours.

We are under a heat advisory here in MO. 97 degrees (feels like 100+), sun with cumulus clouds, little breeze, no rain in sight for days. August!

Have a great trip, Iris! If you come through Seattle at the end of your cruise, you should still get great weather.

HB - here's hoping the dinner goes well tonight. Your mom really keeps you on your toes.

Carl - Every time I think of spam, I think of the Monty Python spam sketch. Every time. And even now, for any of us who watched Monty Python, if spam comes up in conversation, we will always launch into the spam (song?) (chant?). Heck, I was singing the song in my head as I read your post! It's really all about the Vikings. Here's the Monty Python spam sketch if you haven't seen it.

As for me, I'm enjoying our sunny and not hot, weather. I was expecting more clouds but I'm pleasantly surprised by the sun. But for those of you with really hot weather, drink lots of water!

Today's my cleaning day, so I'll be doing that too.

A friend of mine is coming up from SF and will be staying with us for a few days, so I'm prepping the guest room for her. It'll be great to see her.

My s.o. is in the kitchen making vegetarian chili. He has such a great recipe for it. He already made the vegetable stock for it this morning, so now he's on to making the actual chili. I'm banished from the kitchen right now, but once it's simmering, I can go in and clean up after him (which I absolutely don't mind).

    Good morning and happy Saturday.

Iris safe and fun travels. Its wonderful that you are 'blown & going,' as my mom used to say.

Scams are everywhere. I'm dealing with a dispute with Hike shoes myself. I've ordered shoes from them before so I wanted to order again and did. Everything was the same as the first time I ordered, except I didn't get the shoes. The emails weren't answered. I finally started writing on their Facebook page. Now that got their attention. They say I did order, but it went through a 3rd party to fill the order and they aren't responsible! I put it in dispute with the bank - the bank agrees with me. However Hike sent the bank a copy of my receipt, and in the teenies of tiny printing on the bottom of the receipt it says "maybe filled by 3rd party." Even if I'd seen that, it wouldn't have meant anything. Moral of the story, even purchasing from the proper website the company seems to be trying to take your money and not send you your goods.

JeriLynn I have no doubt the garage will be neat and tidy in short order. I know its bothering you. As Iris said, I'm not going to say a thing, I have my own issues.

Carl I think you being a councilor is wonderful. You've got the correct mindset for it. I think you getting out is the best thin you can be doing for yourself.

Zetta I bet your ready to get out of that heat. I'm glad you've found a house. Let the boxing begin.

Hot, hot, and hotter here. I need to water before its too hot to be outside. We have a covered patio and then a flagstone extension. Those flagstones get hot. I have the umbrella's up so the pup's pads won't get burned. She doesn't seem to mind it one way or another, shade or not. But I can't walk on it barefooted without the umbrella shading it, so umbrella wins!

HB did I miss it? What time did your mom leave on her great adventure?

    Let's be safe everyone.

This is crazy. The message board just asked "do you still want to post this?" Hmm, ya when I wrote it at 7:00am not now. Crazy.

Anyway a quick question about Chicken noodle soup. I grew up with it as just that, chicken noodle soup. However on occasion DH had 'special' chicken noodle soup. Its where you have mashed potatoes and make a huge dip in the middle and drain the broth then add the chicken & noodles on top of the mashed potatoes. I've made it occasionally for DH, but if I were honest, its gross to me, I don't eat it.

I'm just curious if anyone else has hear of that? Or even makes it.

Let's see how long until this posts! Let's be safe.

Eagle, that sounds like Depression food to me. Depression food is what you cook when everyone is hungry, you don't have enough noodles to go around, and you don't have money to shop. My wife had a friend who was raised by a single mom and, when she was homesick, craved white beans with biscuits cooked on top. It was what her mother made when there was month at the end of the money. I ate some Depression food when I was a child, but I never had that particular dish - or noodles with mashed potatoes. I'd try it if it were served, though, it might be good.

Eagle, if that shoe company took your money, they definitely are responsible for you getting the shoes. They need to refund your money and charge it back to the 3rd party that didn't ship the shoes. Sounds like they are taking the order and having the shoes drop shipped from the factory. I would pursue a fraud complaint with the credit card company, and write the president of Hike to tell them why you are changing shoe brands.

    Good afternoon/evening everyone.

My name is Eve and I’m new to this site and the message boards. I hope it’s okay to join your thread.

My husband just received the “official” ALZ diagnosis this past Thursday, though we’ve been aware of his cognitive decline over the past year.

Just reading your posts over the past 2 days has been both informative and reassuring as many of you speak to the same feelings/emotions I’m experiencing.

We live in a rural area in Northern California, with the closest family about 3 hours away. Connecting with others dealing with similar issues will make this journey feel less isolating.

Thank you for reading and being here.

Welcome to our porch, Eve. There's an empty rocker waiting for you.

All of us on our thread have gone through what you're experiencing right now. I started this thread 17 years ago when Charles, my husband, was diagnosed.. I knew very little about what to expect. I doubt I could have dealt with everything without the help and answers I got from everyone. I lost Charles ten years and seven months ago. I was his sole caregiver and it sounds like you will be also. Feel free to post and ask any question you might have, however insignificant it may seem to you. We're here to help in any way we can.

Again, welcome to the front porch.

Lorita, thank you for the warm welcome! Your message brought me to tears and I think I just realized that I may need to start with a good cry, and then on to learning all I can. You are correct in that I will be the sole caregiver. We live in a very rural area however we have an awesome neighbor I can call on in case of emergencies.

Heading out now for a walk with my dog to check on the veggie garden. My daily “therapy”.

    Thank you again.

Also have two Great Pyrenees, Sheena and Stormy and lots of.girls and babies, a couple of bulls and one steer named Billy. All of them are my family now along with my friends on this thread.

Welcome to the front porch where there is always room for another rocker.

I'm finally starting to see some progress on appointments in Missouri. I have had two acupuncture so far, with problems on the second one due to being on my stomach with the esophagus achalasia. CT scan of chest Friday did not show good results, but will wait for discussion with Dr. Monday will be busy; urology with harmon shot 8:30, Oncologist at 10 and acupuncture at 12.

Good morning. Warm and sunny here. It should be a bit cooler tomorrow, so I will defer my weeding. I'll rope DS in for a bit; he starts school on Wednesday and will be busy with Microbiology and Anatomy 2.

Eagle— The shoe situation is awful. I often order via Amazon with that 3rd-party fulfillment statement but haven't had issues. I did get scammed once via a Facebook ad masquerading as QVC selling Dooney & Bourke. The whole business of having been scammed didn't just make me angry there was a sense of shame— like I'd done something wrong— as well which just made it worse.

I've not enjoyed that particular repast, but canned soup might be the original "convenience food". I don't think my MIL or SsIL in Indiana could prepare a meal without the inclusion of a can (or 2) of Campbell's soup as the secret ingredient. My own mom, on the other hand, tried to sell me on feeding DS undiluted canned soup in lieu of jarred baby food. The sodium!!??!

Iris— I'm so glad you will have a balcony for this cruise. On which cruise line are you sailing? The food looks amazing— that you for sharing the pictures. Keep 'em coming.

Lorita— I hope you enjoyed your movie night.

Ron— I hope you get better news on Monday. It's great that your appointments get coordinated to allow you to make fewer trips.

Eve— Welcome to Lorita's porch. I'm glad you found us.

There are some great resources for new caregivers in the New Caregiver Group which you can access under groups in the purple banner above.

    ___________________________________________________________________________

The trip continues. I get the occasional text and phone call from my niece mostly griping about mom's passive aggressive approach to getting what she wants vs just stating a preference. I grew up with her shenanigans, but until recently niece never got this treatment. It makes me wonder about social filters TBH. Niece also called for guidance on managing Auntie. Mom's soon-to-be-90 sister is a force of nature who likes to run the show. This is fine when it's just her and mom who loves to defer to others and then complain about choices made after.

But niece doesn't want Auntie coopting plans. They'd agreed to meet for dinner one night. Yesterday, Auntie sent a text announcing that she and her boyfriend would be there at 2pm. This is not dinner. What Auntie wants to do is chat on the balcony about the old times and then have dinner. The nieces and friend plan to be on the beach because that's why they drove 300+ miles and don't want to devote 1/2 their beach time to listening to stories about people they don't know. Niece thought maybe she'd call and gush about the restaurant Auntie picked last year and meet them there later instead. That was agreed to, I've not heard how it went yet.

At the last update, mom hadn't given away any more of my clothing which is good. I did warn niece that I lent mom my straw fedora and do want it back. Also, I won the lottery they are staying and extra night. They always do, but I thought maybe with all the drama it wouldn't happen this year.

I hope all have a safe day out there.

    Good morning

Welcome to the porch Eve. You will find we're a very supportive group of one another and you are very much included.

Carl I have done all of the things you suggested. What I might do though, is a follow up letter. My bank is now taking up the matter with Hikes bank. I've ordered these shoes through Amazon & clearly should have done that again. But alas, Amazon didn't have the color I wanted, so I ordered from Hikes website. Lesson learned.

Iris beautiful pictures and the food looked amazing. Enjoy your trip & know that we are with you!

Ron I hope Monday goes well for you.

Lorita be careful of the heat if you go out.

HB sounds like you did win the lottery, an extra day away. In your wildest dreams did you ever think you'd ever say the words to your mom 'I want my Fedora back, don't give it away?' As long as she's safe & having fun, right?!!!

Everyone let's be safe out there today. Its a hot one again, temp in the 100's and heat index 110.

Morning, already hot! Did my usual outside things this morning plus taking down the trash. The elm tree that I hope will eventually replace the big elm looks puny so watered it. The Bradford Pear Darwin transplanted looks great, not even wilting in the hot sun. The girls are in the barn after their morning dips. I feel sorry for the people who have to work outside in this heat and for the animals who have to stay out in it. At least the girls can be in the shade and if there is a breeze it helps.

Iris, The tart looks really good and the food on the other plate is arranged beautifully. Glad you enjoyed it. Will you be able to get off the ship and into land or is it strictly an on water trip?

I need to wash the GPs ears today. Sheena, especially is shaking her head a lot. Enjoy your Sunday and try to stay cool.

Ron, nice that you are getting your appointments since you moved. Do you have to travel to Springfield for most of them?

Eve, hope your night went well and you got good rest. Crying is a cathartic and really helps. I still cry a lot when I think of something or see something on tv that reminds me of Charles. So go ahead and cry when you feel like it.

Watched the morning news show and Dr. Stanley and now Denim & Co. for two hours. I will refrain from ordering.

    Back later.

Lorita, yes, Springfield is where I go for all appointments except for primary, which is Branson.

I have had a couple of disappointments; 1st was my son and daughter in law had us tickets for the Hank Williams Jr show in Branson Saturday night and I didn't feel well. The 2nd was seeing results of CT scan Friday looks like my lungs are not satisfied with just COPD.

    CT scan results:

    1. COPD/emphysema with peripheral fibrosis in the lung bases which

    could reflect an early manifestation of an interstitial lung disease;

there are also innumerable relatively high density pulmonary

micronodules in the lower lobes suggesting developing superimposed

    pulmonary ossification.

    2. Consider a 3 month follow-up high-resolution chest CT to evaluate

    for progressive pulmonary fibrosis

I couldn't believe how fast I saw the results. I had the scan Friday at 11am and went to the hospital web site just to register on line portal and saw the results posted. In shreveport it was usualatleast a week before seeing ang results.
