Hello, Goodlife. I like to buy locally grown honey. It is sold at the diner I frequent, as well as other places. Here is all I know about beekeeping:

The sex of a bee is hard to see,

But he can tell and so can she,

And that is why, in times like these,

There are so many sons of bees. 🐝🐝

testing…As some of you can tell, I was unable to post yesterday. Trying again.

BethL, I live in Queens, in a house with a garden. I am as far west as you can be without living in Manhattan. DH and I moved here from Manhattan in 2015, so he could walk to work. I grew up in Michigan, but I do not have a strong connection connection to Iowa. DH did, though; he got his medical degree from Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine. Did you work locally as a nurse after graduation?

Good morning. Dreary and rainy here; I think this rain may be associated with the outer bands of Erin since winds are out of the east. I've really noticed it being darker in the mornings the last week or so.

Ronald— I hope you get seen by pulmonology sooner rather than later and get a plan for symptom control so you can get working on the cabin project between your lunches out with family.

Tigersmom— What's going on with you? Are you dealing with the editing-on-a-smartphone glitch Quilting complained about on the General Topics Board?

That plum torte you're baking. Is it the NYT's more requested recipe version. I saw it in my Cooking App and it looks amazing. Is it as yummy as promised? LOL, that app has become my go-to cookbook of late. I still have a couple old books I consult, but when I'm bored, it's my go to. Tomorrow I'm going to give the Enchilada Suiza a go.

Lady Z— It'll be nice to be in a place that allows for an interesting walk. I kind of had a giggle about you walking on the Oregon Trail— you'll want to be careful not to get Dysentery. (That's a very Millennial joke. Sorry. Those in their 30s and very early 40s would have played this early computer game at school)

Eve— So you're on the other side of Route 50. My folks used to have a home on a golf course near Ocean City MD. As you leave the beach on Rt 50 there is a sign indicating "Sacramento 3037 miles"

DH always got a kick out of the sign. He grew up on Rt. 50 in small town Indiana although it's called 16th Street through town. We once drove 50 from his mom's house to my parents' place. I don't recommend it.

Judith— Good luck with your C-pap check in; do you need to bring the chip from the device to the appointment? It was a couple of years before I could consistently remember mom's.

Dawn is remarkable stuff. The OG is good for all kinds of things and the newer spray jawn is even better in some applications.

Goodlife— Nice to hear from you.

How many hives do you maintain? Is there anything different about their honey based on plants native to your area?

Iris— Thanks for sharing more pictures. They're amazing. One thing I like about HAL's ships is their elegant and classic livery. We saw the S.S.Norway from our Disney Cruise (they had the same itinerary but fewer children I suppose) a few months before she was scrapped. She was nothing like today's ships.

    Jerilynn— Any trips planned?

Mint— Will you need to do any painting once the new doors and windows are in? My new windows have wood interior which meant painting 17 double hung windows and 2 egress doors. Yuck.

    ____________________________________________________________________________________

Busy day today. DH has a dental appointment for his permanent crown placement. DS starts classes today. He also has a derm appointment at 4:15 to deal with a large skin tag under his arm. It catches on the seams of tees and dress shirts and then bleeds. Yuck. When he called, he lucked into a cancellation today because otherwise we're looking at January.

I missed the callback for hematology. My phone was set to silent mode for some reason, and I didn't have the watch on because I was in the shower. I called right back but didn't get through. This is frustrating. I would normally go to the office, but the new patient coordinator works from home so there's no help to be had there.

Mom has her yearly Medicare appointment with her PCP. This is kind of a formality for her as her care is generally managed by the specialists. He gave a us a referral to their memory center and I've not heard back. I did check a few months ago and was told I'm on the list, but it's getting ridiculous. I do not want to discuss this at the appointment for obvious reasons. Mom seemed better for a while after her Lymes treatment but of late her word-finding is terrible and she is having some conflated memories. For the most part she recognizes this and will ask me if something happened as she remembers it.

I spoke with my niece briefly yesterday. She reported that mom was "kind of being a mean girl" around the friend in reporting things friend said or did in an out-of-proportion manner or assuming they were off having fun together leaving the others behind because of naps or sleeping past 7am. Mom tends to glom onto me and while she'll "share" me with DH and DS she'd be happier if it was just us most of the time. Niece is my surrogate. Mom clearly liked the trips they took just the 2 of them which could be more mom-centric.

Mom's pharmacy called yesterday. They were trying to delivery her rescue inhaler and she wasn't responding to the gate call, or the delivery person was at the wrong gate. He sounded confused. I'll pick it up and drop it off later today. This whole free home delivery thing isn't working as I'd hoped.

I hope all have a nice day.

As some of you can probably tell, I was unable to post yesterday. Escalated twice to moderator and am still waiting for a reply from the help desk. This morning, looks like I can again. So I’ll keep this short,

BethL, I live as far west in Queens as you can get without living in Manhattan. I am one subway stop and four minutes from Grand Central Terminal. I do live in a house with a garden. I actually lived in a house in Manhattan, too; we sold that in 2015 and moved here, where DH could walk to work in five minutes.

Neither of those houses had your DELETED ‘n span garage, though! I envy that.

I grew up in Michigan, but i do not have a strong connection to Iowa. DH did, though. He got his medical degree from Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine. He was born in Brooklyn, and came back to NYC to complete his training. Lucky for me! Did you work locally as a nurse after graduation?

Good morning. Much to my great delight, its raining. I really think I can hear my yard whispering thank you! It seems you can water all you want and the yard looks ok. But rain and it looks better almost immediately.

Tigersmom if your having issues posting please reach out to [email protected]. Hopefully they can help you figure it out.

I want to sit on the patio for a bit before my day starts. Back later. Let's everyone be safe.

Morning. Iris, I have so enjoyed my trip to Alaska through your wonderful.pictures. Keep them coming.

Good to see your post, Goodlife.

Not feeling on top of the world yesterday or today. Didn't read yesterday,- got something in my eye early and it bothered me all day. Woke up at 2:30 and was awake for almost two hours worrying about everything. This thing about everything going wrong is getting me down.

Zetta, I still have a tv in the bedroom - right now am watching Doc Martin. It started from the.very first.

Hope everyone is well. Darwin just brought vegetables. His daughter brings lots to him and he shares with neighbors. He is wobbly this morning, too.

    Good morning Rockers.

Lorita. I hope your starting to feel better, get some rest and slow down. I'm trying to do that as well. I've been having problems with my glutes, no pain when I get up, just after I've been up and around for awhile. It's nice that you and Darwin are there for each other. He needs to slow down as well.

Ron. Another reason I understand your view is different in Missouri, it does not have the same memories as the view you had in your Louisiana home. I miss ths views I had in my Oregon home.

Eaglemom. I also enjoy the way grass looks after a rain, and also the smell. I also like sitting on the back deck with my first cup of morning coffee, while my fur babies are doing their morning thing.

Iris. I feel like I'm on the trip with you. You take real good pictures. You'll have to leave me behind when you go on that tram. 😬

Another hot day here, it's 106 now going up to 110. Take care all of you guys, stay safe. Hugs to all Zetta

Zetta, I watch Wagon Train on ISPN, too and I also prefer two one hour episodes. I haven't done anything yesterday and today except the bare essentials. I need to call Sears and Visio about the tv, but not today. For the tv I have to take a picture and send it but there is nothing to take a picture of except the tv. Everything is just so hard, it seems. You are right, Darwin is 86 and needs to slow down. He's a small man and sort of shuffles and walks carefully, which is good. He just can't be still because he has always been busy. He farmed 850 acres after he moved here, then ran cattle. Also before he moved here he farmed hundreds of acres. and just cannot sit still now. After he left here this morning, he had four more stops to go to deliver vegetables.

Question: I'm stocked up on cherry tomatoes. I can't eat the seeds so what can I do with them? Years ago a girl at work gave us a bushel of them and I know we used them but could eat seeds then.

Goodlife, glad to see someone on the porch from Co!orado. Years ago we went to Colorado Springs in July and it was chilly at night. The picture of the lift or tram Iris posted reminds me of the one that takes you to the top of Pike's Peak. We did not ride it.

Good for you, Judith. I will check to see if I have peppermint oil and, if not will include it in my order next time.

Still hot, 94 with heat index of 109. Tomorrow is supposed to.be cooler but I won't bet the farm on that. How lucky you are, Mint, to have that cool weather.

Lorita, I think I would make tomato juice out of cherry tomatoes if I wasn't able to eat them. Wash them, cut them in half in a mixing bowl, mash them with a potato masher, and strain the juice. That's how my mother made grape juice for jelly.

Our high temperature here was about 90, which is 10 degrees cooler than Monday. Someone at the store said a high of 78 is predicted by this time next week. I'm ready!

Good idea, Carl. Carol suggested using a colander which I do have but who knows where.. They're predicting 79 here Monday or Tuesday. Guess we might have to look for a sweater.

August is turning out to be the month from heck. Husband diagnosed, had to put down a beloved cat, and now there’s a wildfire a couple of miles from me. There’s a constant stream of aircraft directly over our home, evacuation warnings nearby. Keeping a close eye on it and ready to leave if needed. Positive thoughts please!

Eve, prayers that the fire will be extinguished and you all don't have to leave your home.. Several years ago we had a really bad fire season and one evening there was a fire east of us and one west of us, neither more than two miles away. It is really scary.

Eve - I agree with Lorita - very important to have some "me time", even if it's only for a short time. We need that otherwise we might burn out.

I'm sending all positive thoughts your way about the fire! I hope it gets extinguished ASAP.

Iris - I've only been to Juneau once, but I remember really liking it. I am loving your photos!! But oh no, I'm not getting in that icy water! Nope, nope, nope! 😄

tigersmom - here's an amazon link to the squishable tea kettle. I'm pretty sure it's that exact one. We both like it - it doesn't take up that much space in a bag.

Hi Goodlife2025 - I have a lifelong friend who lives in Durango, CO. I've visited her and it's just such a beautiful place to live.

As for me, my friend arrived here Monday night. We talked for awhile, got her settled in, listened to Death Guild for awhile, and then headed off to sleep.

So far we went out to lunch yesterday and today. Last night we watched Knives Out, which was a good cozy mystery.

We've also been playing board games. We brought out Last Night On Earth, which is a zombie game. You choose a scenario, and then play it through. The one we did last night required the "heroes" to get gas and keys to the truck and then get out of town. Easier said than done. My friend and I were the zombies, and my s.o. played the heroes. It didn't go well for him. 😈 And a good time was had by all.

    Last Night On Earth.jpg

Our poor guy, he made it to the truck, filled it up with gas, but alas, no keys, and three zombies to fight. He didn't make it.

We'll probably play again tonight. She takes off tomorrow, but it's been a good visit.

I've been going to the gym, as always. I've been promised boxing tomorrow. 🙂

    Good Evening All,

Waiting for some of that cooler weather here as well. 102 today but the bigger issue this year is we have only had 2.7" of rain since January. Fires abundant in western Colorado this summer and we have had a lot of smoke. The nearest fire though is about 80 miles from us - so not like Eve - please be careful and know your evac plan. Hopefully you don't have too many animals to evacuate as well.

GG - I used to spend some time in Durango when I worked in the non profit world. It is quite the college town now but still fun to visit and the Silverton-Durango railroad offers the best scenic mountain trip during any season. I used to live in the Seattle area and my sister still lives outside of Lacey. Your stories of WA make me miss it.

Lorita - Pikes Peak - I can't believe I am saying this having lived here nearly 50 years now, BUT I too have never been. There is so much to do here I have just never gotten around to it. There is an annual road race to the top that has always sounded fun to watch from a safe distance; sitting in a chair at a cafe with my favorite beverage as they go by. 😎

Carl - Your bee - poem cracked me up. As usual your humor adds a smile to my face and I look forward to reading your posts. PS.. queen bee is the only one who gets a boyfriend or actually several but only once in her life. Nurse bees are like nuns; females but devoted to their one purpose - taking care of the queen and her eggs. Workers bees are also female but more like the cooks, construction contractors, and maids, they are the army and backbone of the hive. Then the drones are males - a hive can have several dozen but they are really only useful to the virgin queen. The queen lays about 1,000 eggs a day (she is tired). A good queen bee lives for 2-3 years. An active hive this time of year has between 10,000 - 50,000 bees.

HB - first, you are amazing taking care of your mom the way you do - really an inspiration because you keep it "real" while keeping your humor. I always think what a great approach you have with her regardless of any thoughts you may share with this group. Honey does taste different depending on what the bees have been eating. But I think alfalfa or corn is probably similar regardless of the geography. However, flowers make a big difference in flavor. Dandelions in the spring are the first flowers bees harvest but I don't care for that honey and much prefer the fall honey when our bees have been on the sunflower fields. I currently manage 5 hives; which is plenty as my DW enters late stage 5 and tips her toe in stage 6. Definitely getting help after this season.

Thank you all for the warm welcome - it was nice for me to talk about not ALZ for a change. Good night

Wildfires are awful! Be safe, Eve!

To all who supplied answers about the towel animal, I do believe it it is a bear. Thanks for letting me know, because I couldn't figure it out myself.

Today we were in Sitka. The Russians traded with the native Tlingit people and made Alaska a Rusdian territory and made Sitka the capital. The Russians sold Alaska to the US in 1867 for $7 million. It was called Seward's Folly because Alaska was just a big block of ice, so they thought. But in 1880 GOLD was discovered near Juneau and the rest is history. Alaska became important in many ways. Juneau became the capital of the territory and then of the state.

Today I visited Fortress of the Bear which is a rescue center and sanctuary for orphaned and injured bears. Healed bears are prohibited from being returned to the wild, so they must remain here for the rest of their lives.

Next I visited the Raptor Center, which cares for orphaned and injured eagles, hawks, falcons, owls and other birds of prey. Some may be able to be released when healed. Some had been shot.

These pictures are taken in front of a screen that prevents the birds from seeing humans so they don't get too attached.

I had my second acupuncture treatment. I actually am walking better with less stiffness. It seems to be working. But how?

To the new Rockers, I joined the board because I had memory loss and suspected that I had Alzheimer's Disease. But repeated neuropsychologic testing and PET scanning determined that I do not have Alzheimer's Disease or any dementia. In fact, my neurologist changed my diagnosis to adult ADD. I used to be active on both the PWD boards and the caregiver boards, now I mostly post on Lorita's Friends thread.

I live in Southern California and I am retired. I like listening to the other Rockers from around the country and even from overseas, and learning about their lives and also reminiscing about how things used to be. I like to travel. Now I am on a cruise to Alaska. It's fascinating! There's room for some more on the front porch.

    Good morning rockers!

Eve, prayers are sent for you and everyone in the path of the fire.

Acupuncture seems to be helping my neck, but still a lot of pain in left arm and middle back. Some of the pain im still having is probably due to other problems. I finally have a appointment for a pulmonologist September 2nd. I also saw the results from the 14 day heart monitor. Of course I didn't understand most of it, but did notice episode of heart rate from 54 bpm to 152 bpm.

Speaking of cherry tomatoes brought back memories. Growing up one of my aunts had a couple of bushels of cherry tomatoes 🍅 on the back porch and my cousin and I would sit down and eat all we wanted, then run out to the watermelon patch, burst a watermelon, grab the heart out and leave the rest for critters.

Good morning rockers, it’s pleasantly cool on the deck this morning but will be heating up to mid/high 90’s.

The fire has grown to over 550 acres, 5% containment. They flew night flying helicopters dropping water overnight.

Carl - you’re so right, that land is dry and not maintained. It’s the property below ours, undeveloped so no homeowner to keep it up. My horses openly graze our land and do a great job of keeping grasses down. What they don’t get to, I mow or weed whack.

GG - that squishable tea kettle would be great for our camping trailer. We don’t camp, I bought the trailer to use when we have to evacuate for fires.

Good life - I’ve been keeping an eye on the Colorado fires because just before the ALZ diagnosis I was looking for homes/land in western CO. Such a beautiful area. For many years I was a director of a large animal evac group that worked for our county primarily during fires. I probably need to revisit my evac plan now that my husband may be of limited help. Glad you mentioned being prepared.

Iris - I love cruising and a HAL cruise to Alaska was one of my favourites, though it’s been 20 years. I’m living vicariously through your pics, TY.

Taking the husband to a nail salon this morning as he’s unable to reach his feet easily. Found an awesome person, and best of all, AJ was excited when he saw her set up with a foot soaking tub.

Thank you all for the positive thoughts on the fire. I really appreciate this thread and getting to know everyone. It’s such a welcome break for me as well as being educational.
