Morning, Ron, there is not much better than picking a big tomato.off the plant, wiping it off and eating it like an apple with salt, except busting a big watermelon in the patch and eating the heart. All of that brings back memories o f my childhood. Good memories.. Wonderful that acupuncture. Is helping you. How often will you get it?
Okay, a little.bit confused here -- Goodlife and Eve, are both.of you from Colorado? Guess I should make a list. Colorado is a pretty State. We were there in late July, very.hot except at night. We came.home by way of Raton Pass. The only cool place we found during the day.
Iris, your pictures are so beautiful. I know all of us have enjoyed your trip through your pictures. I think the towel animal was a Polar Bear because it was white! I bet it was hard to undo it. So glad the acupuncture is working for you. Does it.hurt when they insert the needles?
Just did a couple loads of laundry. Got one dried and put away and put the other one, a serape and small quilt, out on the back.porch to ðry in the sun. It's about 90 right but morning lows are supposed to.be in the sixties and daytime highs in the seventies. Hard to believe in August.
Guess I better go and call Sears before Wagon Train comes on, Zetta. Thanks, everyone for suggestions about the tomatoes.

Good afternoon, rockers. Somehow i went from being unable to post to multiple publishings of the same post overnight, while I was sleeping. All without a peep from the help desk. So my apologies for the multiple versions of the same story.
HB, my plum torte is indeed the NY Times’ most-requested recipe. I have been making it, I think, since they first published it. It is delicious, and always a big hit at parties. It is also easy, easy, easy. It is best made with Italian prune plums, which just turned up in the markets here.
GG, that squashable teakettle is about the cutest thing I’ve ever seen. I want one.
And eaglemom, thanks for the tip on reaching out with my tech problems. I did, twice.Iris, keep those pictures coming. I’ll be sorry when you return to port!
And Eve, I am so sorry about the fires. That is truly frightening. i hope you remain out of harm’s way.it is 69 degrees here today, but it feels like 63. Erin is 300 miles away, but she is churning up giant waves that have closed all the beaches. And it is really windy. Today should be the day we will feel her effects the most.
This morning I limped on over to the grocery store in my giant boot, where not one, but two, people offered sympathy and advice. And they say that New Yorkers aren’t friendly! TBH, I have always found them to be kind. They were unfailingly so to my DH with dementia, both at the grocery store and on the subway.
Our neighborhood party is still on for this evening, so I am off to make my torte. I think we will all need jackets. Have a good day, everybody!

Iris. Were you as close to those Bears as you were to the Birds? I loved the look on the Bald Eagles face, while that girl was holding her. Its nice that the acupuncture is helping, how often will you have to have it done?
Eve. Im praying that 🙏 your safe away from the fire. I'm also sorry you had to have your cat put down. I have 2 dogs and 3 cats, it would be so hard to have to have that done. Sounds like your DH, likes getting his toe nails done. My DD has hers done often, I had my done a few times, I really don't like it. I don't like the nail climbing, I cando that myself. No thanks on the polish.
Not to much happening with me today. Im just counting we have 40 days before we will be in Bosie. Where I'm at now its 110, in Bosie it's 91, still hot but hopefully easier to deal with.

Judith, thanks for the link. I’m definitely going to try that recipe if nothing happens…I’m also going to switch out the cotton balls with peppermint oil for my sprigs, cause they’re getting kinda old.
I know it probably seems quiet Ron. I’ve got used to my nephew . At first when I we to bed I constantly heard him and he was not noisy. But due to his ADHD I guess, he doesnt go to bed till about three in the morning and gets up like at 10 AM. Even though he stays in his room the majority of the time, when he’s not here it seems more quiet than normal. I guess I just know he’s here and sometimes he comes out and we talk for a little bit. Sometimes he’ll help me with things which is nice
Lorita it is hard for me to feel it is August also. My flowers look like it is first of July. It has been hard to do anything outside. We have had a lot of misty days. I feel like we have not had summer. Other people told me they feel that way too and here it’s almost over. The grass is green and growing lush very unusual for this time of year. It was cool today and misted the entire day. We have had a lot of that. The good news is I haven’t had to water a lot.

Goodlife2025 - I'm from California and lived there most of my life, but I really like Washington state, particularly right now when the weather is so good. 🙂 Everything is still very green, and it's nice and sunny. I know my summer days are numbered, but I'll enjoy them while they're here.
Iris - I'm loving your photos - especially the raptors! I never get tired of looking at them. And you're right, that sunset was beautiful.
tigersmom - that kettle is pretty cute. And really, it doesn't take up much space at all.
Eve - continuing to send all my best thoughts your way that they get the fire contained and that you continue to be safe.
My friend is heading back to the Bay Area (she's probably back home by now). We had a great visit - lots of tasty food, good conversation, fun board games. It's been a great few days.
I'm down a gym day, so I'm going in tomorrow morning.
It's looking likely that I'll be volunteering some some legal skills next month for a local non-profit, so I'm looking forward to that.
Other than that, not much else for now (which is probably good).

Judith and Zetta, the bears were in a huge fenced area and we onlookers were on a walkway above the bears. Also my photos were taken with a zoom lens so the bears appear to be close.
Today was a fun day in Ketchikan, the salmon capital of Alaska. I visited The Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show. Has anyone ever heard of timbering sports? Apparently there are worldwide Olympic-style competitions involving chopping wood. These lumberjack athletes were recruited for this show. They perform various wood-chopping feats in teams. The audience was divided as to supporting the Spruce City (American) team versus the Dawson Creek (Canadian) team. We were to cheer, hoot and holler for our team to spur them on. Along with the events they engaged in witty repartee. It was great fun! Here are some pictures.

I don't generally hear back from the tech desk either. I do sometimes hear from someone named Maria (not sure if she's on the tech or moderation side of things) if it's an on-going tech issue or if I expressed concern about a post. There was someone who appeared to be catfishing operating via PMs a while back.
I suspect your cake will be better than the Enchiladas Suiza I made using the NYT Cooking app. It was so very much effort (a homemade salsa, a roux, poaching chicken) for so little payoff. The boys both hit it with generous lashings of Tabasco and I had leftovers. DS never leave leftovers for Mexican or spicy Asian dishes.
Zetta— Will the SIL's employer provide a moving service or will you be packing up?
Mint— Sometimes people with ADHD slip into a different sleep cycle. A couple times a week, DS wakes in the middle of the night for a few hours before going back to sleep until close to noon. He's better when he's busy with work or classes and is weirdly pleasant first thing in the morning unlike his mother.
Iris— I have no idea what towel is supposed to be. My mine went to "Alf" the first I saw it.
Lorita— Any traction on the TV or fridge?
Ron— Perhaps your DS and DIL would be happy to have you work in their kitchen if you shared the results with them later.

Mom had a good visit with her phlegmatic PCP. He was pleased to see her looking back to her normal self; he tends to see her immediately before or just after a hospitalization.
After last night's kitchen debacle, DH has decided we should go out tonight.

Again. Iris, beautiful pictures. I've seen those lumberjack games on tv. Tough guys for sure. I think the log rolling looks IIke fun and hard to do. This morning was really nice and cool. Took over bc an hour to fill the water tank.because as each one of the girls came to the barn they stopped for a drink so filling it couldn't keeper up until they all came in. They drink a iot of water.
HB,maybe some progress. For the refrigerator they're waiting for the coupon code,- from somewhere. For the tv, I have to send them a receipt which WM hopes they can provide after ten months. Then when they get that they will send a form for me to comp!ete, then send the refund to me. I am not.ho!ding my.breath. I'm getting worn out with this. Never thought much about it but when they make a home delivery, no receipt comes with it. When I'm at WM next week I'll get another tv. Then, to get it hooked up and what to do with four old ones - three flat screens and a really.old one with tubes. Trash pickup won't take them. Store them in the barn or cellar?
Supposed to.be in the seventies next week. Everyone will enjoy that. Iris, I think the towel.could be either. We had a Basset.once named Tilly Lee - very low to the ground and !ong.. You should have seen, and heard, her running throw the snow. She grunted every time her belly hit the snow.

HB. We will do no packing. It's all been taken care of, the movers pack everything. Two days before the moving truck gets here we will pack up just what we will need till the truck gets to Bosie. The truck will leave on 9/30 and so will we. We will get there in 3 days the truck could take up to a week. We may have to get us some air bags to sleep on, for a few days.
Eve. How are you doing today? Hopefully the fire is under control. Your in my prayers 🙏

Good afternoon rockers!
Zetta - I’m with you, no nail polish and I don’t care to have either a mani or pedicure. AJ really relaxed and enjoyed the whole experience. I’m hoping that as his disease progresses he’ll still enjoy it. Time will tell.
The main fire is holding at 624 acres with containment at 10%. Good news! Though another fire broke out yesterday involving a fully engulfed home, with extension into grasses and trees.
August just keeps tossing out little surprises. Today it was a widespread power outage. Luckily we have a whole house backup generator.
Did I mention that after last week’s visit to see AJ’s son & family, his son called me asking about his dad’s health. Telling him over the phone wasn’t ideal, but we talked for an hour. The next evening DIL called. Both are incredibly supportive and have offered to help with deferred maintenance on our home. They live 3 hours away so I’ll hold off asking for help for now.
It’s never been easy for me to share personal issues or ask for help but I’m learning that it’s there. I meet weekly with several women (used to be my members when I was a WW coach). Last week I shared what’s going on and couldn’t have asked for more support and caring.
This will be a long and difficult journey but I’m already learning and growing. So far anyway!

Lorita glad it is going to cool off a bit for you. We have had a cool damp week here actually until today. Of course it’s hot and human because it is misted a-lot for two days.
when I went to the Amish market today they had the plums. So I made the plum torte but I made it in a pie plate because in the comments people said they made it in a pie pan and in a cake pan. I made it just like the recipe called for today. If I like it the next time I make it I’m gonna try using a 2/3C of flour and 1/3 cup of cornmeal. Several people commented that they like that even better. I just remembered I forgot to drizzle the lemon juice and sugar on top but I may actually like it better without it so I’m not gonna worry about that. I also made a strawberry cobbler had put strawberriesout to thaw yesterday.I’ll satisfy my sweet tooth. I actually haven’t baked anything in a while, which is unusual for me. I could not get the photo to insert like it usually does, so I had to go a little different route but it worked I guess. see a piece of skin missing on one of the plums that’s because it was bad and I didn’t want to leave that on there. It was only skin deep because when I took the skin off, the plum was fine. I still don’t eat it.
I’ve been trying to live my life rather than being tied to certain things. Like I’ve decided not to fix tomatoes this summer unless I freeze some, I may do that. I don’t have very much room, so will be very little. I did beans they’re easy and they take no time. I love the fresh canned tomatoes, but it just takes so long to cook them down. I always water bath and that’s kind of a pain and it takes a while. I wish I could in my pressure canner but for some they always recommend water bathing. I’m not sure the reason. Maybe one of you guys know

Good afternoon, rockers. It is 83 degrees and sunny, and the wind has finally died down. Erin has moved up the coast to blow on Boston today.
The neighbors outdoor party was a lot of fun. We had fried zucchini blossoms and fried green tomatoes, grilled chicken and three kinds of bratwurst, grilled zucchini, several kinds of fresh tomatoes, and a green salad with feta and a watermelon salad with cucumber. It was all delicious.
My plum torte was a big hit, and so were the cookies. We actually had 12 guests instead of ten, including one ninth-grader and a visiting 27-year-old son. And a lovely older pitty named Sally, who sat underneath the table.
HB, I am sorry that your enchiladas were a disappointment. It is a bummer when you go to so much trouble and the recipe fails you. FWIW, one of the reasons I subscribe to that app is the archive of Pierre Franey’s recipes. I learned to cook from his 60-Minute Gourmet column. Those recipes are bulletproof. Unfortunately, Pierre didn’t do enchiladas.GG, your workout schedule amazes me. How was the boxing?
Eve, glad to hear that more of the fire has been contained. I hope that continues to improve.
Iris, love your lumberjacks. They made me think of Monty Python…he’s a lumberjack, and he don’t care… I think your towel animal is a bunny, but HB has a point. It DOES look like Alf.
Lorita, does anyone in your area do electronics recycling? That’s how we have to get rid of old TVs here, flat screen or otherwise. Maybe try googling electronics recycling+your town?
Since I’ve talked so much about this torte, I thought I would attach a picture. Since DH left this earth, I am a pretty lazy cook. This looks like work but it is easy.

Good afternoon Rockers.
DH's bronchitis continues on. I know the cough will continue for quite sometime, but it shouldn't be a gut-wrenching cough. I've got a call into the doctor. It's not terrible until later in the day and evening, but goodness its awful then. Its hard to discern when he's an asthmatic with a chronic cough to begin with, what's an alarming cough and what's an okay cough. Phew, we're both tired of it, that's for sure.
College football begins tomorrow. I read that there isn't a weekend until 2026 that there won't be a football game. That sure seems like a lot of football games to me. We'll cheer loud and proud for our alma mater, Kansas State. Tomorrows game is in Dubin Ireland. DH used to travel there frequently for work. We'll be watching.
The company that hangs our Christmas Lights contacted us, they are ready to start hanging lights. Its August!! I said we weren't ready because we were changing up our light colors this year - which is true. Besides I don't want the lights on the house in August. that's crazy to me.
Hot and humid weekend ahead here. Of course we'll be staying in with DH. I'm glad he doesn't feel as bad as his cough sounds. He just doesn't feel great. There is always lots to do here.

I read about a Navy family whose household goods were packed and shipped by the Navy, like Zetta's movers are doing. They forgot to throw out a bag of garbage and left it on the kitchen counter, so when they arrived at the new duty station on the other side of the planet, that garbage was right there in a box.

No dump close. My trash company gave me the number for one 30 miles away. .Bryon might have an idea. He took some old fans. I will Google electronics recycling, Tigersmom.
.MInt, I froze some cherry tomatoes. Mike told me he freezes them and when he makes soup he adds them. The skins come off so he takes them out. My folks canned everything except meat. Before we had a freezer everyone kept their meat in meat lockers in town. Always used a big pressure cooker that wss scary. Still have it in the storage building. Canning is a lot.of work, more so than freezing.

Iris - Loving the lumberjacks. Like tigersmom, in my head I'm singing "I'm a lumberjack and I'm okay. I sleep all night, and I work all day."
I'm kind of familiar with some of those lumberjack competitions. We sometimes stop at Lumberjacks, a restaurant in Redding, CA. They have a big screen TV , and they broadcast - lumberjack competitions. It's hard to take your eyes off of them because these guys are so athletic and good at what they do.
And the towel animal? I'm going to guess it's a moose because they're pretty common in Alaska.
HB - I'm sorry about your enchiladas. It sounds like a difficult dish to make ….

eaglemm - Christmas lights in August? I haven't even thought about Halloween yet, and Halloween is like Christmas for goths. 😄
Eve - You're so right about this long and difficult journey. What I found when I was caring for my sister, Peggy (early onset-Alzheimer's an FTD), was that some people fell away, including some family, but that some people stepped up, people who I never knew were out there! My core group, Team Peggy, were me, Peggy's best friend from kindergarten, and Peggy's "platonic life partner", as I refer to him. They're still with me. 🙂 So you just never know.
I don't know if any of you like cozy mysteries, but I read The Thursday Murder Club a while back. It takes place in a retirement community, and the crime solvers are a few of the residents there. Light, amusing read, and I enjoyed it a lot. It's very British. Turns out, it's now a movie. I'm sure it's wonderful (and with Helen Mirren in it, how can it not be?). Warning: there is a side dementia plot line, integral, but doesn't take up a lot of space.

GG, I read a mystery novel placed in a retirement village but it was in Arizona. It was a great story. When I get back home I'll try to look for the title.
The ship sponsored a 5K walk for charity on the Promenade Deck this morning. I didn't walk but I did donate to the charity and got a tee shirt.
We are cruising on open waters on the way to Victoria, British Columbia. I'm so excited, I saw a WHALE breaching from my verandah! And it was so close! But I couldn't get a picture.
We will arrive in Victoria at 8 pm, so not much time for sightseeing. We will arrive back in Seattle tomorrow morning at 7 am. So sad, the Cruise will be ending. But I've had a fabulous time! I didn't have time for all the activities, there was so much going on. My group sponsored an event every afternoon except one day, so we were busy.
I have to pack now. I bought so many souvenirs, I hope they all will fit in my suitcase.

Iris, just think.of all the wonderful memories you will have of Alaska. It's always kind of sad when a vacation ends.
Well, I hadn't seen Billy for a while so thought I better check on him. Of course, the PU wouldn't start so drove the csr. First time I have been out in the pastures with it.
He wasn't at the MH and.not in the south or east pasture. All the girls except four babies were down in the NE pasture. Drove down below one of the ponds and.hit part of an old hayring and put the first big scratch on my car. I hit it with the PU a couple .of weeks ago and should have moved it but was in a hurry. Lucky there wasn't more damage. Pretty good, I.guess since I've had the car a year and right months.
Found Billy happily grazing with the others so stopped and visited a while. He is a big boy. Made my day to find him. Girls are used to the PU.being out with them so we're really curious about the silver car. Next week I will Move that hayring. Guess I will put the battery charger on the PU in the morning. Always something!
About ready to call it a day so will say good night. See you tomorrow.

Lorita - Sorry to hear of your TV challenges. This coming week I’ll be visiting our local Best Buy to purchase a new washer dryer set as well as a new oven. Hoping for Labor Day sales. Delivery and removal of appliances is challenging in our rural areas.
TigersMom - the party sounds like a fun even filled with fun foods. We used to have a neighbor who hosted a neighbourhood party annually. It was so much fun.
EaglesMom - goodness, it seem early to be thinking about Christmas lights! When I shop I see that Costco is already ramping up for Christmas. I’m not ready. Probably won’t be ready come December!
GothicGremlin - I love that you have Team Peggy. I guess I’m building Team AJ day by day right now. I’m so grateful for AJ’s son and DIL. They’re really stepping up. His daughter… not at all. Which, over the years, has hurt AJ emotionally. Her loss. Thanks for mentioning the Thursday Murder Club. Going to add it to my shopping list.
Ugh, it’s 94 degrees at 6:30 pm. I grew up on the Monterey Peninsula and even 60 years later I’m not used to this heat! Fog, give me fog.
