Lorita - I'm glad things involving your appliances are starting to calm down. You had to deal with this for way too long. And I love that you had an actual check in the mail!

I like that Charles was a clothes horse. My s.o. is a label hound - Hugo Boss all the way. Thing is, those shirts look good on him, so I can't say he's wrong.

HB - I'm certainly old enough to remember all of that, but that wasn't how we did it. I actually don't remember how we did it, but I know that punch cards weren't involved. I remember the sign up tables though.

I certainly remember SSNs being used instead of names for privacy's sake (shudder). Plus, my work-study job was in the alumni-development office (the fundraising office), so as a student, I had access to way too many student records, including biographical info and SSNs. This is one of the reasons why I ended up becoming a privacy advocate - I was horrified by the cavalier use of SSNs, even back then. I remember thinking back then that I should not have access to what I had access to.

Beth - It sounds like you've had a great day.

Zetta and Carl - I don't think I know anything about key punch cards. But — at my high school — I had an after school job in the main office answering phones. They had one of those old telephone switchboards, the ones with the cords (not a PBX). It was outdated long before I was there! All I could think of was Lily Tomlin and Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In. But I learned how to use it.

Today was pretty good, although there are fires to the north and east of us. It's filtered the sun, so that the light is a sickly yellow. We've got the air purifiers going.

Gym was an hour of escrima, so all cardio. My trainer and I got into a good flow, exchanging offense and defense. It felt really good. We didn't have mats today so there were no physical take downs (whew). I think a side reason why I like martial arts so much is because I like playing Go, which I've played for years. Go has often been described as a "mental martial art", so I was probably primed to like physical martial arts.

My mom was a SAHM and her first job when I was twelve was as a switchboard operator, like Lily Tomlin portrayed. My mom used a professional speaking voice and I subconsciously copied her inflections.

GG, I served on the board of directors of my condo association. We had to fill out a signature card for the bank with all of our identifying information, so that we could write checks. Copies were casually kept in a file folder in a locked file cabinet. At one time I did get all of my own identifying information out of that folder. Later on, one of the board members became negative towards me and threatened to sue me. I'm so glad I had removed my personal information from her access. I keep getting asked to run for the board again, but I will not.

Another day of coughing. I took the trash out. One neighbor is doing demolition and the workers discarded the bathtub into our trash bin. Owners doing demo are supposed to hire a dumpster for what comes out of their unit. But I didn't say anything.

My friends are in Kentucky now. I'll see if anyone posts pictures.

    Good morning,

Yesterday was a better day although busy. 8 am Audiologist in one town, up to Scottsboro to deliver groceries and food to BIL, a TJ Maxx stop in, lunch at an old country store turned Cafe, then over the mountain to Huntland for a hair appointment. A lot of riding in the car. Granddaughter's new husband had a septoplasty yesterday and their dog is home from the Vet recovering from his second joint surgery in 2 months. Poor granddaughter is the one who cleaned up the vomit. So she literally has had her hands full. I told her to drug both her new Hubby and the dog and shut the bedroom door. And yes HB, my word that would have been deleted DID rhyme with yours, lol.

Carl, my Mother worked as a keypunch operator for a time, which is how I came to know my late husband. Mama worked with his Mom.

The person who cut my hair also does DH's hair (well, she shaves his mostly bald head in the summer, which I like). This was my first visit to actually have something done. While she was cutting, she asked if I wanted my hair to be cut up over my ears and DH loudly said "YES, if you don't, she'll be complaining "My Hair is TOUCHING ME"… lol. Well, I'm happy with the cut and, in my defense, my hair was indeed "touching me".

One of the great grands has a school event today. Yesterday the school sent parents an email "Sorry for the late notice but…" It's Grandparents Day at the school and they host lunch. So, we are going. His parents are estranged from his biological grandparents (justifiably - we went to court with them for moral support) so we are the only Grandparents he has. That kid LOVES DH. He's a very cute and loving little boy. And respectful. After lunch at school, we'll take his parents out for a grown-up lunch. I enjoy them.

I guess I should get up from here and go wash up the dishes from Scottsboro. You all have a good day and be safe. The heat is back here, too. Thunderstorms tomorrow. TTYL.

Cool today (60s) with predicted showers in the middle of the day. The senior center is having Bingo after lunch, followed by an ice cream social. Beats sitting home watching it rain.

Springfield is having its 29th annual Japanese festival this weekend in the Japanese Stroll Garden, part of the Nathaniel Greene botanical gardens. People from our sister city in Japan will be demonstrating elements of Japanese culture. There will be dance, sword demonstrations, et. al. Sounds like a good excuse to get out of the house.

DW's sister called last night and invited me to go to Costco with her Tuesday. She has an eye appointment, and we'll see what it costs to get a second card on her account so I can shop there. We only recently acquired a Costco here, and I have never been in one. SIL and I have been friends for 60 years and she is trying to take care of me. We're both pretty independent, but we can lean on each other some.

Hope you all have a great day!

    Good morning.

Mint I don't remember when we last had 46 degrees. Lucky you. Enjoy it. Today's only going to be 100! I'm not complaining about it, I just can't believe it. Thankfully its suppose to be the last day like this.

I don't have a Costco membership, just Sam's. I like Costco, but the two closest to us are very inconvenient to get to. I had Sam's delivery yesterday. The last time I was there somehow I didn't get laundry soap, dishwasher soap or kitchen trash bags. If your order is over $50 they deliver for free.

Lorita I'm glad you received your check. That had to have felt good. You messed with that for quite sometime.

Football tonight - my Chief's are playing. Then Saturday is filled with college football. Our Kansas State team doesn't play until 6:00. I've got several small projects I'd like to attempt today & tomorrow, if its not too blazing hot outside.

Iris it sounds like your slowly getting better. I'm sorry you missed your trip with your friends.

Good for you Carl, about getting out. I think you've made very wise decisions about trying to be around people and getting out. Good for you. I can image its difficult.

GG your energy level and workout amaze me .I'm inspired, but goodness that is quite the routine you do. I realize you've slowly worked up to it, but I'm impressed, none the less.

HB your life is very full. You keep busy & keep a watch over your mom.

Ron when will you be in your house? I think you'll really feel like the moves complete then. Hopefully your able to watch your grandson play football tonight.

Zetta, the heart of a 27 year old is fantastic. I know you'll enjoy your moving north. You should be just in time to watch the leaves change.

I'm sorry if I've left anyone out, its certainly not intentional. Our porch has grown and that's good. DH is coughing. Today is the first day he's ask me "when will this be over?" He's off all the medication except for cough syrup if needed. I have a call into his PCP to see 'next steps' type of move.

It's Friday, let's everyone be safe.

Good morning. Temps are forecasted into the 80s today with considerable humidity. Bah.

Lorita— Good for you passing on things for which you no longer have a use. I try to clean out my closet of things that no longer serve me at least twice a yearly. I donate to a homeless charity in Philadelphia. The resalable things go to their thrift shop to help fund their projects and the rest goes to their closet. They operate showers and laundry facilities for the unhoused and these clothes are distributed there. Once I was downtown and happened on a man wearing an outgrown tee shirt of DS's from scout camp.

    Eaglemom— 104 sounds miserable.

Carl— The Japanese Garden Stroll sounds lovely. I hope you have nice weather for it.

Costco's card rules are fairly draconian. Non-business Members can get 2 cards free but they have to be members of the same household and IDs are checked when you apply. Business members can add a non-household member for $65 which is the price of their entry tier membership. The upgraded membership is $130 which gives you an annual rebate. For a person who lives alone, extra cost might not make sense unless you're planning big ticket shopping like vacations, hearing aids, TVs, tires, etc. For my family of 3, we typically get back at least enough to cover most of the membership renewal.

Don't get me started on that animated piece of beef jerky. LOL, when RFK went on his rant about people with autism never paying taxes DS said he wanted that in writing.

Iris— That's pretty sketchy slipping a bathtub into a communal trash receptacle; theft of services actually. Here, your local trash hauler will take such items if the homeowner is doing the work (sometimes for a fee) but you have to hire a dumpster if a contractor is doing the work. No idea how the guys driving the truck know one way or the other.

I think sometimes the kinds of scales used in assessing someone are informed by the assumption of a specific diagnosis which can miss things. It can also mean that a person could have 2 diagnosable conditions but have one fly below the radar. This happened with DS when he was little and in the process of being screened because of the overlap of symptoms. As a result, DS got ASD and ADHD right after he turned 7 and dyslexia a year later. His new psychiatrist added GAD when he was 18. He's an alphabet soup kid.

This site has some interesting information on ADD/ADHD in adults.

Judith— I wonder if the CC would have the invoice/receipt number for Lorita which Walmart could us to locate her purchase record.

Jerilynn— I'm glad you're happy with your haircut. And your DH's as well. I hope you enjoy Grandparents Day at school. The few times mom went she came home with a detailed critique of everything she objected to as an educator certified K-12 with experience in general and special education. I always got an earful. She wasn't wrong.

You mention washing up dishes from Scottsboro. Do these folks you cook for actually return your things to you dirty or do you repackage in their containers and take you own containers home the same day? I have a friend who does a lot of cooking for others; she buys to-go containers in bulk to avoid this.

    _________________________________________________

Speaking of careers that no longer exist, my DH repaired typewriters as a part time job in high school. Mom was a colorist for photography studios before she started teaching. Her job was to apply oil paint to the old school sepia toned photographs. She was much in demand in their heyday and out-earned dad's fulltime job a couple years.

I'm thinking of making a Costco run today. DS and DH ran out of their regular toothpastes and are down to using the tiny tubes from the dentist' swag bags. I need to swing by the dairy store as well.

I hope all have a pleasant day.

On the Walmart website look for "orders". On Amazon it is at the top of the page and it says "orders and returns". When I order they email a confirmation. When they deliver they email a confirmation. Additionally they keep a record of past orders and when delivered. No reciepts.

Off to pharmacy….very looooooong story and not interesting…..

Afternoon, cool and cloudy here. We had a shower before I.got up.

I went to work as a medical secretary 64 years ago today.. I was the secretary on an EENT/Medical ward working with the Chief of Medicine and Chief of EENT for a couple of years, then worked in Urology for several years and trained other secretaries, then to a Medical ward working with a doctor who had a laryngectomy. Charles and I got married in 1971and shortly after I transferred as a service secretary in Social Work Service.. Spent the rest of my time there until I retired with over 33: years service. That was 31 years ago.

Trying for a refund has too many things to try to do so am dropping it. Each time I talked with them something different was added. Maybe this new one will be ok when I get it set up. Hopefully Directv will do it. I need grandkids who can do all these newfangled things. Thanks for all the suggestions.

    I think I will take a nap

The news is reporting they're going to the homeless emcampments around Tulsa tearing up where they are living. It showed one man who wss living in a tent - they took his tent but he got it back. They're taking all the things they have and throwing it in the back of a truck. They shot one man's dog they said lunged at them.. The dog had surgery and will survive. They have a choice of going to a shelter or jail It just said the shelters are full.

I know it is a problem but it just doesn't seem right to take everything they have and throw it away. There has to be a better way.. I think Stitt shaved his scraggly beard.

Can't edit my.previous post so will add that on a later newscast it was said all the shelters were full so people were going back to where they were but now all.of their belongings and improvised shelters are probably gone.

Are you all having problems editing your posts after they have posted? Iris, are you still feeling better each day? Surely hope so.

Ron, I.bet you enjoyed your Mexican food. I had spinach enchiladas once and they were really good. There's a Mexican restaurant in Borger that has the best chili rellenos. Will have to ask my BIL if it's still there.

    Will say good night.

Yes, Lorita, I have been having trouble editing. In fact, I have been unable to edit at all. I didn't notify the Moderator because it was too hard to explain.

HB, a lot of sketchiness goes on where I live. But I don't have the motivation to confront it like I used to.

Today was not a good day for me. The coughing is less, but I had a headache all day. Could it be because I've sedentary all week? My leg muscles feel weak. I need to eat some protein. I'm going to bed now. Good night.

    Good morning,

Grandparents Day lunch was fun. The great grandson had not been told we were coming so he was delightfully surprised. He loves DH to the moon and his little face just lit up when he saw us.

This set of kids are very involved in sports, so we have some games to attend. Wrestling, volleyball and football. I don't know how the parents manage all the activities. The Mom is a walking master scheduler. She reminds me of HB. ❣️ Ron, we took the grownups out for Mexican yesterday! I didn't cook a single thing yesterday.

HB, we take food in our containers, and they come back clean. But you know. I just wash them again because…??? I'm a little nutty? I would love to use disposable containers, but BIL has had a stroke affecting his dominant arm and would have difficulty managing, I think.

Lorita, I'm glad you got your refund for the fridge. Wish I could come help you with the TV. And you are right. Grandkids are invaluable with the technology issues.

Our hummingbird feeders are swarmed with busy little things getting ready to go south for winter. It's hard to keep up with who is who when there are so many of them. As you might imagine, I have named each of them, lol. No new goat babies, though I do think Flopsy may be PG.

What is it with all this coughing, sneezing and runny noses around here? It seems even seasonal allergies are so much worse this year. Iris and Eagle I hope things are getting better at your houses.

Mint, my daughter always dreads the winters. She's been up there 14 years so I watch for y'all on the national weather.

OK, my agenda awaits. I'm cleaning two closets today and visiting my Aunt down the road. Hopefully that's all that pops up today. Y'all have a good day.

    Good morning!

Today is Father Son day! We were supposed to have had our day together already, but I came down with that respiratory infection. I know we are going out for breakfast, but after that, I have no idea what we will do.

Grandson, after lettering in varsity football his Freshman and Sophomore year, decided not to play this year and concentrate entirely on baseball. I was looking forward to his football games, but it is his choice and I support whatever he does.

I probably want make a decision on my cabin until closer to summer. I can search on line and find several that I would be interested in, but I want to go inside one and touch, feel, and be able to walk through it. You can look at pictures all day and not really know what it looks like inside.

    JeriLynn I dread winter too.

allergy to be bad in this neck of the woods also. I’ve been using fluticasone since so far I’ve been doing good. I’m going to use it until the end of October and then take a break.

sounds like a good idea Ron.

Sounds good, Ron. Our favorite meal to eat out was always breakfast.

It was really cool this morning and sunny. I have made four trips out to the water tank this morning to fill it because as the girls came to the barn they stopped.by to get a drink so it wasn't filling very fast. Then the three big planters of caladiums looked wilted so made several trips to water them. Already looking better. Because of the rain I hadn't watered them in a few days.

My back on the right just below my waist hurts so kind of painful to walk but it is getting better. Allergies are bad here, too, Mint, because of all the weeds. There is so much snow on the mountain and ragweed.

After getting probably 30 pairs of pants in boxes to donate I thought about a brown pair I thought I might keep so had to find those- in the bottom of the box, of course. Even tried a red pair but put them back. Going to be a job getting things out to the car.

Eagle, I heard the Chiefs lost last night. Was it a good game?

Iris, get some Boost to drink to get your protein. Sandy kept urging me to try it and I keep it all the time now. I put it in the freezer until it gets semi- frozen and have it that way. Just like a malt..

JeriLynn, I am enjoying the hummingbirds, too. I saw two at the feeder a day or two ago. I bet I make food for them every coupIe of days. They are so cute. What is the gestation time for Floppy?

Hope you all have a good Saturday.

Ron, glad you're feeling better. Ziggie's is the best place in town to eat breakfast. You can get breakfast anytime they're open, from 6 AM to about 8:30 PM, and it's really good. As you reported, you don't leave hungry either.

The original Ziggie was a man from eastern Europe whose name started with Zgb and contained mostly consonants. No one around here could pronounce it, so he called himself Ziggie. He franchised the brand after his original restaurant became popular, and a Mexican couple who worked at his restaurant now own two Ziggie's restaurants. Just another example of immigrants working hard and succeeding.

Pretty day here, 71 and sunny. I visited DS this morning and bought tomatoes from the roadside stand. It's only 1:30, I still have time to see the Japanese exhibit at the botanical garden. TTYL

The Stroll Garden was beautiful today. There were demonstrations of archery, origami, face painting, music, dance, magic/storytelling, bonsai, calligraphy, etc. I wandered around watching the exhibitions and people, and sat to contemplate the koi pond and the Zen rock garden. There was a huge crowd. A license plate look while walking back to my car revealed visitors from Iowa, Illinois, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Kansas. Driving here from Iowa or Illinois means driving more than 200 miles on Missouri roads.

The people watching was worth the trip to the garden. Some people were wearing Japanese dress, Steampunks and Goths were braving the sun in black leather corsets, Furries were wearing tails and ears, some visitors were dressed as anime cartoons, and some were wearing what I can only describe as clown suits. Most were wearing shorts, halter tops, and general comfortable summer attire.

At one booth, there were 1,000 origami cranes made by local 5th graders for the event. Each visitor was invited to take a crane, write their wish for world peace on it, and place it in a container to be hung in a nearby tree (already festooned by many cranes from Thursday and Friday). The story was that a 10-year-old girl who lived in Hiroshima in 1945 contracted leukemia from the radiation and set herself a goal to make 1,000 cranes before she died. She fell 350 short, and her classmates completed the project. So now, every year, our 5th graders make 1,000 cranes.

Good morning, rockers. I have been AWOL for a while because my life has been pretty boring. Mostly i have been trying to stay off my sprained foot, since it did not seem to be healing very fast. A few days ago I decided to wrap it in an ace bandage during the day, and that has helped a lot. I am still icing it at night.

The weather is pleasant and a little warm here today, but it is supposed to rain hard this afternoon. We kind of need it; after a very rainy spring, it has been a pretty dry summer. Since I am homebound, I have become kind of obsessed with the US Open this year. Last night’s men’s semifinal match was amazing. Finals today and tomorow!

Lorita, i am so glad to hear that the check for the refrigerator finally arrived. Your posting and editing problems sound a lot like what I was experiencing a few weeks back. It suspect that maybe in the recent site update, they brought that bug back. Please let the moderator know. If enough of us complain, they will find a fix.

Carl, your new title for RFK made me laugh out loud. That trip to the Japanese Stroll garden sounds great.

HB, i am also laughing at your need for a Costco toothpaste run. I have been squeezing those tiny tubes since i came home with my injured foot. I never seem to go by a pharmacy, and i am trying not to make unnecessary trips. Fortunately, i have a lot of them. And your alternate name for RFK is priceless. I will be adopting it.

Iris, i am sorry that you got Covid and are having a hard time with it. This new variant seems to have some harsher symptoms. I hope you rest up and feel better soon.

JeriLynn, it was so kind of you and your DH to go to Grandparents Day lunch. You are both truly kind and giving people.

GG, your workout routine makes me tired, too, but I admire your dedication. DH practiced the martial arts for the last 30 years of his life. His flavor was kung fu, but he studied ninjitsu, too.

Ron, I am sorry to hear that you are under the weather. I agree that you need to walk through a place to decide if you want to live there. Pictures don't cut it.

Well, that’s all the news for now. I am going to try to post this. Wish me luck!

Tigersmom, I .missed their names for RFK. I imagine they were good ones.I have had a busy day- did a !oadof laundry. dried and put it aesy. Changed the bed linen, hate that, hard to do a king sized bed by yourself. Wish I had a regular sized one but it is what it is.

I hope your ankle improves soon. I twisted mine on ice a couple of years ago and it takes time to get better. Glad the ice is helping.

Which men are in the finals? We used to be tennis fans but not lately. The ones we really like have retired. Is Djokovic still in it?

Watching a good John Wayne movie- Eldorado, so will stop for now. Sleep well, everyone. Good night.

JeriLynn - I do the same thing with my s.o. and his hair. When I get my hair cut and colored, he gets his hair cut while the color in my hair being "processed." That way I can ensure that he doesn't walk around looking like a mad scientist - because his hair can get like that.

Carl - The Stroll Garden event sounds really fun. Speaking as a representative of the gothic community - it does get really hot wearing all that black and spending time in the sun. But hey, we must suffer for our art? 😄

I love that all the kids made origami cranes.

tigersmom - Hey, nice to see you. I totally get why your DH was into martial arts. When you're in flow and you let your training take over, you just kind of go somewhere else, it's almost peaceful - which I know sounds weird. Maybe it's just really being in the moment?

And okay now, somehow I missed the RFK Jr. names. Now I have to go back and find them. Okay, I found Carl's, but not HBs. Good one, Carl! Our states on the west coast (Washington, Oregon, and California) and creating some kind of alliance (I just saw the headline, didn't read the story), so we might be able to get our vaccines?

So yesterday got progressively worse and worse, weather wise. It was fine in the morning, but there are a lot of fires in the area and so much smoke headed our way. Not only was the light filtered (kind of a sickly yellow), but the air quality was dismal. Usually we're in the green zone, and the air quality hovers around 20 or 30 (anything below around 50 is good). By yesterday afternoon we were at about 110, which is "unhealthy". We have two air purifiers and we kept both of them on at full speed. Currently we're at 58 (moderate), not great, but not unhealthy either.

    Good morning,

Lorita, goats normally have a gestation period of 5 months. Only in recent months have we begun to control "exposure" times. And DH has begun giving them extra feed each day to bulk up for winter weather, so I may be mistaken. Still watching for signs.

GG, my first season in Washington State was a shock with the smoke from fires. And you are right, the skies look so ominous with that yellow color. In Utah and California it were the inversions that were scary as well. People left work early if they could due to driving condition. We get the tail end of the Canadian wildfires down here sometimes, with the same advisories regarding air quality. And you can see the haze.

Ron, you sure are having some good meals and good fellowship. I'm glad. I don't blame you about the cabin walk-thru. I would want that too.

HB, thanks to your story, I now have the serial 7 subtraction results taped to my desk. I too have math phobia. It's real!

Carl, what a wonderful time you had at the exhibit.

Mint, 55 here this morning with the moon shining so brightly. It was beautiful.

Tigersmom, glad your foot is better.

Eagle, how is your DH today?

Iris, are you better, is your headache gone?

I know I've missed somebody. I'm going to start taking notes as I read.

It's sunny and nice here today with highs in the 70's. I'm attending a training after church today to be a part of the Good News Club at the local elementary school where most of the grandkids attend. So, it'll be a busy day. I hope you all have a good one!
