Just need to talk to my friends (211)

Carl. I remember George Gobel but hadn't thought of him.in years. My sister had a fig tree in her back yard and she really enjoyed them At the VA Hospital there was a big fig tree between two.of the.buildings across from the main hospital. We called them the quarters where Doctors used to live. Eventually the doctors moved out and some of the services like Personnel, Fiscal and others moved in. Carol.told me they have demolished those quarters to make a parking lot. The grounds used to.be so pretty with big Magno!ia trees until parking lots took over. I never ate one of the figs but others did.
It has been a warm day.. Just before dark we sat on the front porch for a while - really nice with a good breeze. Girls were grazing and little babies were playing. Really peaceful but with so many memories of the last 81 years here.
You all have a good nights rest...good night.

Ah, I see we are in a new month. I'm glad you remembered, Lorita.
I spent four hours cleaning. I only cleaned two areas, but I move slowly so I take a long time. My back hurts, so I took some aspirin, I couldn't find any acetaminophen.
Ron, it's good to hear from you again.
See you tomorrow. Good night.

Catching up …
Lorita - I hope that your diverticulitis problems clear up soon. It sounds like it takes a few days for everything to run its course …
Ron - thinking good thoughts for you as you make it through all of your medical tests. I hope all goes well.
Zetta - thinking of you! You must be close to Boise by now.
About figs - My grandparents always had a fig tree, and so did my aunt. Gotta have a fig tree so that you can make cuccidati (Italian fig cookies) at Christmas time! The recipe I linked to doesn't have the right cookie shape (neither do any of the recipes I looked at). We've always shaped them into crescents, otherwise they look (and probably taste) the same as ours.
Monday night we went to Death Guild in person. It was a fun night. The DJ played my request (Receiver by Dead Lights), and called me out in the online chat so that I wouldn't miss it. 🙂 Made me happy.
My s.o. and I took our former neighbor, V, out to breakfast yesterday. It was nice to spend time with him, and take care of a couple of things for him, but we were sad to see that his Alzheimer's has progressed (as we knew it would). V asked me how Peggy was doing. I deflected. 😐️ I really, really, really wish he wasn't rattling around in that old Victorian with all the stairs.
After breakfast with V we took off for home.
We got back home today - nice drive all the way. We hit some rain on the mountain passes, but it was no big deal. Drove through Portland, OR on the way up. Perfectly lovely city. It was a bit cloudy so we couldn't see Mt. Hood.

I always have fig preserves in stock. But no tree. Now I must research and find a fig tree.

Good morning from Lorita's front porch!
After my SIL brought the fig preserves and the taste brought back memories, im now researching to see if fig trees will be able to grow in Missouri weather. The kind of preserves we always make is with the whole figs in the jar, not the mashed up ones. I couldn't believe it, one time I saw a store with green fig preserves.
My upper and lower GI came out good. He stretched my esophagus to help with the achalasia and only problems was what was already known; achalasia, diverticulosis, and hernia. My only problem from the procedure is blood pressure and hesrt rate. This morning its 160/92 and heart rate of 115. I will be drinking a lot of water this morning and keeping a eye on vitals.
I pray the high resolution CT scan and pulmonary function test comes out as good.

Morning, Ron, I aldo.have diverticulosis which sometimes (like now) turns into diverticulitis. Hope you never have that. Glad your tests yesterday turned out all right.
GG, when you came through Portland did you see all the riots we hear about? Glad you enjoyed the dinner with your friend. Alz. Is a terrible thing - I saw its progression with my mother and sister and vascular dementia with Charles. Hopefully, a cure will be found someday.
When I woke up this morning my side didn't hurt until I got up, so will continue the Flagyl and liquids today. Going to be pretty hot today but really nice right now. October is my favorite month -shame it had to begin with diverticulitis.
Ron, if you have an Atwoods or Tractor Supply nearby you might find the fig preserves there. They have things other stores don't carry.
Will stop and go fill the water tank, then take my medicine and "drink" my breakfast.

Good morning. Sunny and in the 60s today. It's lovely.
Lorita— I hope you feel better soon. You've been enduring more than your share of aches and pains.
Mint— Lucky you securing Novavax; that would have been my first choice. Alas, the local CVS had only Pfizer and mom's indie pharmacist had only Moderna. It's awfully generous of you to keep an eye on mom while your sisters enjoy their trip to GA. I hope they have nice weather; it wasn't great last week.
Iris— I hope your sleep improves. It's difficult to drag through the day after a bad night.Eaglemom— I'm glad your DH got through everything OK.
I hope the prednisone does the job at home. If not, I would hesitate to consider the ED for IV meds.
Ron— You've been busy. At least some of the activity has been just for fun. Have you had any time to house hunt? Wishing you luck on your next tests.
Beth— The sunrise and sunsets have been beautiful here, too. I need to get out into the garden and do a bit of cleanup. I'd like to move some things and think now might be the time. I need to get the landscape team in to remove a dead shrub and trim my willow. I do wish the shrub had signaled its intention to die in the spring when I had them remove all of the dying azaleas.Gothic G— I met a friend in a cute little town for lunch. They had an adorable shop with a mix of goth clothing for women. I thought of you.

In Philadelphia, you can tell if you're in an Italian neighborhood by the fig trees in the front yards. I don't know about hardiness in this area, but they are generally bundled up against the cold weather with wraps and such. It is not a good look.
I reached out to the researcher from Penn's Memory Center about mom's WATCH study results. He was very apologetic as he said he thought they'd been sent. He sent us both a copy which said her results were normal which made her happy. I still have eyes on her but for now I guess I'm not supposed to worry.
I have to run out to the store to buy DS some shoes today. He came home from class with his Chucks taped to hold the sole on. It is not a good look and he fully intends to wear them today. He has a nice pair of "dress" Vans but says he can't find them. As much as he reminds me of my mother, he did not inherit the same love of dressing well.
I hope all have a lovely day.

HB, there is a Force that holds the universe together. It has a light side and a dark side. It is called "Duct Tape." 👽️
I never heard of fig preserves or jam until this week and had no idea fig trees grew in North America. I never had figs except at Christmas or in fig bars and always thought they were imported from Africa. I learn something every time I visit this porch! There is a Tractor Supply store in Nixa. I'll try to remember to stop in to see if they have fig preserves tomorrow when I take DS to the podiatrist, I'd like to try them.

Carl, on a farm or ranch the two most important things you can't do without is duct tape and baling wire!
Just took my Flagyl and am having my juice. I just watched Dragnet and Hazel is on.
.HB, this hasn't been my favorite summer - first the refrigerator, then the tv, the car and now this.. I hope Fall Is better. I'll be fine in a few days.

hmmm…fig preserves on a Bay's English Muffin. Which brand of preserves should I look for?
Off to see. if old fashioned roller shades cann be installed on my frames.

Good one, Carl. Fig jam/preserves are commonly served at trendier places along with cheese plates. I like it as a counter to a sharp hard cheese like cheddar or asiago.
Judith— Dalmatia is the brand I usually get. World Market has a good price. Bonne Maman has one as well. Mom likes Bay's as well.0 -
Also, it's National Brow Day. Woot!

Good morning.
Everyone is so busy!
Thanks for the reminder about Eyebrow Day, mine need some work.

There seems to.be a day for everything. Who would have thought about an Eyebrow Day? Guess we were a few days ahead of it.

Pork tenderloin wrapped in bacon and slathered with fig preserves- oven or wrapped in foil on the grill
Chicken breast butterflied with preserves added inside and topped - baked in the oven
Pan fried chops topped with preserves
These are favorites at my house

I grew a fig tree in Iowa. Unfortunately, the growing season here was not long enough for the figs to mature. I have heard some in colder climates (like Iowa, zone 5) grow them in pots and take them in over the winter.
I think you can get fig preserves or jam on Amazon.
Busy day today. Exercise class this a.m., then dentist (got a crown placed), then a prayer group meeting at church, then out to eat - it's our 49th anniversary today!

Happy Anniversary. Beth! You have had a busy day.
I have been laying in bed mostly for two days so decided I would sit on the porch.. Little babies were coming out of the barn calling their mothers. I think everyone got together. Filled water tank, walked out to the barn, then decided I would put the car windows up. The remote wasn't in the house and the car told me me it was in it. I !ooked for at least ten minutes and finally found it way back under the back seat along with three face masks. Must have been Rusty.
I was worn out when I got back to the house. I'm. Hungry and the first thing I saw on tv was a big plate of French fries with some catsup on them. That did not help! I think I may try a little food tomorrow, maybe app!esauce. Not much pain now. Liquids are not getting it. Drinking some apple juice. Darwin has called twice to check on me. Such a good neighbor.
Good night, sleep tight. I have never eaten a fig. Just fig bars and I think that is the culprit. I had two big ones the day before this began.

Lorita - No riots. It was just a nice day there, even traffic was not that bad. Portland is just its basic weird self, which is good.
My grandmother (my dad's mom), loved Portland. She lived in southern Oregon for most of her life, and she always talked about Portland. When I was a kid I always wondered what was so special about the place. And then I went there as an adult, and was completely charmed by it - the rose gardens, Powell's books, just the city itself. It's a very pretty place. It rains all the time there too, but it doesn't get as dark as Seattle.
HB - adorable goth shops - sounds like my kind of place! Italians and fig trees - they go together. It's the cuccidati, I'm sure of it. 🙂
Eyebrow day? Oh dear. Mine need work too, Iris.
Happy Anniversary, Beth!!!

My grandparents in Alabama had fig trees, bushes, in their back yard. We played house under them and snacked on the sweet, red, and grainy fruit. My grandmother made fig preserves that we ate on biscuits with butter.

I hope you had a nice 49th Anniversary, Beth.

Happy day after anniversary Beth!
I'm going to look into it more, but i have found out that a couple of varieties of figs will grow in Missouri. I need to research it more, but it will be a bush instead of a tree.
Missouri sure makes it difficult to get your car license and drivers licenses. Obtaining my out of state waiver went smooth, after that it went downhill. First, they would not except my social security card because it was laminated, which i had laminated at State Fair when I was 15. 2nd, my birth certificate was needed, whic would mean completely unloading my storage unit to find. On the social security card i was able to show other proof from tax returns, the birth certificate i have a certified copy on the way.

Morning, everything is hard anymore, Ron. Glad you got it worked out.
Not much sleep last night so watched Leave it to Beaver and something else until about 2. Then Sheena woke me up with her little bark (she uses that when she wants something) wanting a drink and Stormy wanted to go outside. He was on alert about something around the carport. Finally got to sleep about 2:30. Alarm went off st 7 and Darwin called about 7:15.I think I will drink my juice, take my medicine and sleep a bit. I need to get up and was round. I was as weak as water yesterday when I was outside.
FedEx brought my floor mats for the car yesterday. Printed in big letters on the box was "Made in China". Did not know they were but guess all brands may be except that really expensive one.
Hardly any pain this morning but when I'm up I.can tell something has been going on in my side, and my sternum ( costo) is sore. I'm a mess!! Used the heating pad last night and tight now. I do.hope all of you are well this morning.
Going to be another hot day. I need to.go to mailbox this morning and think I will close the driveway gate close to the house and let the girls in to graze. I hate to.cut the grass instead of letting them have it. Back later.
Carl and Mint, is it hard to put the mats in the car? It said something when I ordered that you had to take the others out before putting these in.
0 -
Lorita, I take the mats out of my car every time I vacuum it. When I buy new floor mats, I throw the old ones away and lay the new ones in, just like putting down a small area rug in the house, except that there are little hooks on the car floor to keep the mats from slipping. Not difficult at all.

Good morning. It's gorgeous here today. I'm sure we could use some rain, but sunny and 73F for a high is just lovely.
Lorita— I am sorry you aren't feeling back to yourself. Maybe once things settle and you can start on solids, you'll have a bit more energy.
Rusty is the squirrel, no? Do you have a remote starter on your car or was it a key fob he made off with? Was it not in your house?
Beth— I hope you have a lovely anniversary dinner. Did you go somewhere special?
Jerilynn— I wouldn't have thought of cooking with fig, but those recipes sound delicious.
Carl— Does the Tractor Supply carry food for humans? Wow, I always think of them as carrying just about everything including 6-foot-tall ornamental chickens but never jam.
LOL, first time DS (who is on spectrum) and I went to Tractor Supply, he let out a low whistle and said "Now I know where Temple Grandin buys her clothes". He's probably right.
Gothic G— I looked up the cookies. I've never seen these. This surprises me as my bestie is from a seriously Italian family— the kind where they always have a second complete kitchen in the basement. Even now, living alone, she has a baking kitchen in hers. Every year at Christmas, she makes 45-60 different kinds of cookies which is the highlight of the holiday for my family. But she's never made these that I recall. The house she grew up in did have a fig tree out front and I know she used to bring her older brother fresh figs when he was in the nursing home. Maybe she keeps them for herself.
One of my dear friends moved to Portland after spending most of her adult life in Birmingham. She's completely in love with the city. She and her DH planned to move to NOVA when he retired but I don't see it happening at this point. They've embraced the flannel lifestyle.
Sweetwater— It's funny, when I googled the brand of preserves I buy, it gave an image of fig preserves on biscuits and my mouth watered. That sounds amazing.
Ron— I'm so sorry you're dealing with all this. That is a crazy amount of hoops for one to jump through to get a new license. When dad's state of MD license was set to expire, he walked into a FL DMV, told them "I live here now", surrendered it and they handed him a new FL license according to mom. When I took mom to get a PA license, they looked up her original and gave her a vision test and we were on our way with a new license in about 20 minutes.
Maybe the difference is RealID compliance. There was another poster yesterday complaining about all the documentation needed to convert his DW's license for a state I.D. in MA if I recall correctly.

I finally got my act together and scheduled a consult with an ortho to discuss my knee. I suspect I'm facing TKR sooner rather than later. It's been 7 years since my right knee was done. I've put it off for a host of reasons. For starters, I had an all-around terrible experience the first time although the result is good, I'm told. I'd been super busy with mom's stuff last winter with a surgery, 5 hospitalizations, so many follow-up appointments, her specialist appointments, 7 weeks of me administering IV medications plus shopping, pedis and haircuts. Then I blew out a tendon in my arm which needed to rehab and heal before I could think about a walker or cane use (left knee/right wrist injury). Then bloodwork showed platelet issues which needed to be sorted out first because of bleeding risk. Most recent theory is ITP that seems relatively minor and stable.
I finally have my window to act, so much as I am dreading it, I'll see the surgeon next week. Whine, whine, whine. The guy who did my right knee is extremely well-regarded, but he's moved to a more administrative position in NJ. TBH, I wasn't dazzled by my experience. The person I'm seeing now was recommended to me by my old high school gym teacher of all people. He is affiliated with a community hospital but tends to work out of their ambulatory surgical center with patients home that evening which terrifies my DH.
I don't have anything I have to do today aside from picking up stuff for DS's lunches this weekend and sorting out dinner. DH and I went to a German restaurant for their Octoberfest menu; DH was craving some dark beer and a pork shank. Maybe I'll do the knock-off baked scrod. I'm so bored with my usual choices.
Have a safe and pleasant day.

Morning.
Like Lorita, its gonna be a hot one again today. I'm just now seeing Mum plants arriving at the stores. It seems late to me. I like the look of them, but my allergies do not let me be near Mum plants. They turn me into a hot mess immediately.
DH's neck does have a teeny bit more movement. I might be crazy ( probably am) but I think how he moves overall is less stiff looking. More steady, not that he was unsteady, maybe more sure on his feet. But the cough continues. The good news is the travel insurance paid for the trip we couldn't take because of this bronchitis mess. I have the name of a new doctor, I'm going to see if we can't get on a waiting list. This guy specializes in difficult cases. DH ask me what i was going to do with the money we got back from the travel insurance - I immediately said put it away for a trip when your feeling better. I think that's this biggest smile I've seen him give me in a long time.
I don't think I've ever eaten a fig. Y'all have me inspired to try.
Back later to catch up with everyone else. Let's be careful everyone.

I'm tired if talking about figs! Now is the time to take action!!
I do miss my oven in this camper, have to settle for bread instead of biscuits.

good afternoon
Happy Birthday, Beth🎂💐🎈
Lorita the mats that came with my car were very small. I laid my new ones on top of them OK
it’s another beautiful day. I got the yard cleaned up yesterday except for what I’m going to leave until it gets later in the if I don’t get what’s left cleaned up that’s OK it’ll be there when spring time comes and even easier to clean up then.
don’t know that I’ve ever eaten a fig other than a fig newton.
I’m going to try to make chocolate chip cookies this afternoon
0 -
Ron, that breakfast looks really good.I am so hungry for solid food. Wish I could have one of those chocolate chip cookies, Mint, my favorite. I just had a little Greek yogurt and it was really good. I have been eating Chobani because it doesn't have gelatin in it. This time they were out of it and substituted Great Value Greek yogurt, no gelatin and I like it better. Still no energy or strength but I am better.
I had a glass of Pedialyte on the table by my chair and the cats knocked it over! Why is it that they do things like that when you don't feel like cleaning it up —but I did. They are banished to the bedroom for a while.
Thanks for the I formation about the car mats. I haven't opened them yet. I hope they are ok but just in case WM is sending a return label. I hope they don't smell. Grandpa Gus spray id in the mailbox so maybe I.can get down there today.
HB,Rusty is the squirrel. Haven't seen him lately.but black walnuts are falling behind the house so he may be there. It is a keyfob. The car said remote was in the car. When I go to the dealer I will check on that. I usually do bring it inside but left it in the car thinking I would go to the mailbox. Why he did that I do not know. A couple of windows were down and I think he is the only thing that could get in that high up. Hood is up and no more ness! I wonder if spraying Grandpa Gus on things under the hood will be okay.
Eagle, glad your husband is better. Hope it continues. When I was in WM the other day to get Fresh Pet their mums were everywhere- just a few blooms but about $20. I would like to have one or two but remembering what happened last fall I refrained. Remember Rusty ate every bloom!
You all enjoy the afternoon. Already very warm here.

I learned today that Tractor Supply in our area don't have people food. Mama Jean's Natural Foods have fig jam (for about $6.50 per 8-oz jar), but no fig preserves. I'm not surprised. There is no substantial Italian community here, and figs are sort of a Christmas thing. When I was a boy, my parents bought figs dried in a block, and each fig had to be pried loose to eat it. My MIL made a pastry (like coffee cake) with figs and nuts, and it was really good.
