Mom doesnt listen
My mom is early onset Alzheimers and is experiencing some cognitive decline but not to the extent that I can contact the agency on aging for a caregiver. She can still bathe herself, etc. However, she does not listen to or obey what I tell her no matter what the reasoning. Right now, I am the only one available to take care of her, but I need help controlling her attitude. What do I do?

This is a really difficult stage when dealing with dementia. If you look at the staging tool you will see that it gives a rough age equivalence for each stage. My mom once told me “I can do whatever I want and you can’t stop me. You’re not the boss of me!” The number one rule we talk about often here is NEVER try to reason with a person with dementia. It will turn into an argument and you are always going to lose. A few things to try- Do things that she shouldn’t be doing or is not capable of without telling her or consulting her. A fib may save you and her a lot of stress and upset. Pick your battles. If it doesn’t matter, just let it go. Avoid topics that cause her frustration and anger at all costs (if possible). You would not believe the lengths I have gone to to avoid a difficult topic. Many people with dementia have anosognosia. This is an inability (her brain can’t comprehend) to recognize their symptoms or limitations. This creates a world of problems. It’s best to never point these out, because she will not believe you and may get angry. Because of this you will need to be to judge of the care she needs, not her. In some ways just like with an angry willful child (whether 2 or 15) you have to do what is necessary to keep them safe and accept they might not like it. It is incredibly difficult!

one thing I learned here is that “You can’t reason with someone whose reasoner is broken” so don’t try. Redirect or distract. Read the book “The 36 Hour Day and search online for dementia caregiving videos by Tam Cummings or Teepa Snow which are very helpful.
