I took care of my DH at home. He has Alzhiemer's and vascular dementia. I had to place him in memory care a couple of months ago. I miss him and visit every day. He is receiving excellent care. He looks better and is much calmer.

For me the place he is at is a total nightmare. It is very poorly managed. They don't even get the billing right as it changes by 3K each month. So far I have just been paying the amount as stated on the lease I signed.

There was a safety issue in his room that I addressed myself and I am told that the reason the place smells like urine is because the carpet cleaning machine is broken and they have ordered another. The windows are filthy and one of the elevators has been broken for months.

For the most part the staff seem to be dedicated although there is one who likes to talk about me behind my back and to be honest I just don't need the drama. There is another who seems to roam the building causing discontent and spreading gossip.

So far nothing the "housing manager" has told me has been true. It started on day one when I had to clean my husbands room because it wasn't ready. He is fairly new in his job and seems to make up answers to my questions. Also he is creepy. A couple of weeks ago he talked to me while I was with my DH enjoying and outdoor space. He told me we owed money. It took awhile to straighten out. Tine I could have spent with my spouse enjoying the lovely spring day. Eventually he admitted we paid in full.

Every time I make those huge payments out of what would have been my retirement insult is added to injury as thousands of dollars are added to my bill and I have to straighten it out.

It is hard to imagine but it is possible for people to make a very bad and traumatic experience even worse through their incompetence but that is what the housing manager and some of the staff have done.

I am looking around for another place but there aren't many that can provide the level of care my DH requires and that will eventually take Medicaid.

Although I am still caring for my DW in stage 6, I know it’s only a matter of time that I will have to place her. After hearing stories like yours, it scares the heck out of me. Yes I would definitely find a new place. I have looked at a few from a spanking new facility to one that has been around over 20 years. As long as the place seems clean, I’m more interested in how trained and committed the staff is. We’re on medi-cal and that just limits the available places too.

I kept my DH home as long as I could. Eventually he refused care and refused to stand up. I disagreed when I was told that I could not care for him at home but now I know that is true. On the positive side he is in a later stage and not asking to come home which tells me he is in an appropriate facility. On the other hand I really miss him and am having a hard time trusting others with his care.
