First Day of MC

I have finally got my MC facility choice down to the winner. Check in date is in about 10 days or so. I would have been #3 on the waiting list but just was informed that the #1 and #2 families weren’t ready so the room for my DW is available in about a week. For those of you who have your LO in MC, I just want to ask you how day one went for you.
Was it like a drop off and leave or did you stay for a bit and leave while staff redirected your LO. Was the transition easy or difficult for your LO and yourself. I will be going a couple of days earlier to set up the room with pictures and items from our home to make it maybe easier for my DW. I was also asked if I had a problem staying away for a few days while the staff works on getting my DW used to her new surroundings. I don’t have a problem with that. When you do visit has it been better in the morning or afternoon. When you leave each day do you say good bye or just kind of sneak out while staff redirects your LO. This is all so new and stressful for me and I’m working hard on double guessing my decision due to feeling guilty.
Thank you everyone…

I stayed for a while to visit with the admitting nurse. We went over her care needs, if anyone was barred from visiting, etc. Then I went home.

Setting the room up in advance is a great idea. When you visit just depends on your wife. If they are having trouble getting her to participate in activities, it might be good to go during that time so you can encourage her to go and maybe join her and help her feel more comfortable with it. If she participates willingly you might want to plan your visits so they don’t interfere with these activities. If she is not eating enough, it might be good to eat a meal with her so she can get some extra encouragement, or occasionally bring a favorite meal in for her. My mom is not a morning person, so I never visit in the morning. You might find she naps most days at a specific time, obviously you want to work around that. With a little trial and error you will find a routine that works for both of you. The facility probably has some kind of activity calendar you can ask for. My mom was very angry about the move, so there was no sticking around for a nice visit after.

I also dropped my DH off for lunch. Stayed away 2 weeks. They let him call me every evening. The transition was smooth. I visited at lunch time. Stayed a couple of hours. Slipped out without saying goodbye. Told the nurse I was leaving. She would take him ice cream to distract him. When he asked to go home, I said when the doctor said so. He accepted that.

I’m getting close but not quite where you are yet. If you don’t mind me asking, how did you decide on ‘the one’? Was it boxes that were checked or was it more of a feeling? It is such a stressful and exhausting time. Try not to feel guilty. I don’t think that any of our LO would want us to go through this. You’re doing what is best for both of you. I hope that the transition is an easy one for you and your DW.

Another question just popped in my mind. After your LO got adjusted to the new living arrangements, did you ever take them out for a ride or dinner or haircuts? If so how long did you wait to do it?

Three weeks after placement I started taking my dh out for lunch and to walk around somewhere (a trail or mall) as an outing. I was able to keep that up for almost two years.

To add to Blacksparky’s experience, I toured 6 facilities and while some were newer and fancier, I chose one that had a homey feel to it and had a beautiful outside area with walking paths, trees, gazebo, etc. that residents could access on their own. For my DH, that was perfect as he always wanted to be walking. The activities were lacking, however I was quite sure he would not be too keen on participating in those. So it depends where you think your LO would be happier. One facility had a fantastic activity schedule with outings, etc. Talk to staff, talk to other family members also if the MC will provide some references - or talk to people in the parking lot coming to visit.

Well this is my last night spending it with my DW. Tomorrow I will be checking DW into her MC facility. I went earlier today to set up her room. I have never in my life had this much heart break. I look at Pamella and just see us living a good life together both healthy, but then reality kicks me in the butt. All I want to do is cuddle with her but she wants nothing to do with that. I think I need the cuddle more than she does. How do I get over this heart break, not to mention the guilt I’m feeling for deserting her. I know I’m not deserting her and I’m doing what is best for her. I’m sure I will fill a pail with my tears tomorrow. I guess my life going forward will be alone even though I have felt alone at home but I at least got to see her. Maybe it’s just a different life being her husband again instead of her 24/7 caregiver for the past 4 years. I just love this group as you all know what each of us are going through.

Oh what a lovely cozy room - those stuffed animals are so cute- hedge hogs!!

You're correct you aren't deserting her - you are getting her 24 hr attentive care while taking care of her most important person-you.

Yes it will be a different life for you but I found the feeling changed from being tired & worried 24/7 ["what's that noise?" "did I order a replacement for….?"] to more just caring about how they are doing.

Will be sending you both good thoughts today.

    @blacksparky Thinking of you today.

My dad became much more reciprocally affectionate with mom once someone else was providing the hands-on care and she could just be the doting wife. I wish that for you.

You did a terrific job setting up Pamella’s room, @blacksparky ! I got teary eyed just seeing how much care you put into all the details.

Take what @Victoriaredux and @harshedbuzz said about the new role you will take on. You are Pamella’s best advocate to make sure she is safe and well cared for. Get to know the healthcare team and hopefully they will quickly warm up to you and DW.
God bless you and Pamella. Sending you a big hug. 💝

You’ve done such a nice job with her room. I think that on some level she’ll know how much she is loved and cared for. Big hugs to you today and in the days ahead.

What a beautiful room. You have done so much for her. My eyes leak as I just did this for my best friend/SIL last week. Time for us to heal. Hugs for making her safe and in a great place of care.

I have followed your posts for a long time. You are a good husband, and you did a great job caring for her for a long time. God bless you, sir.
My hope for myself is to be able to keep caring for my DH until he gets to that point that he no longer knows who I am or where he is, and at that point I think he could comfortably transition into MC and not feel abandoned. This is what I hope.

You will still be her advocate, making sure she is getting good care and seeing to her needs. Try to catch up your sleep, get your brain working again by making a list of what needs done at home, etc.
