Broken arm

one of the residents in moms memory care has broken their arm. The swelling is really intense. They can’t cast it till the swelling goes down. She keeps forgetting her arm is broken and takes the brace off and it keeps swelling more. Her sweet family has tried all they know to keep the brace on. Cut sleeve over her arm, a pice of cut pantry hose, duct taping the brace with a note. They can’t get her to keep the brace on. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Unfortunately they probably need to restrain het other arm so that she can't use it to remove the brace. That's really going to make her helpless, and she probably needs an around the clock sitter. Using restraints of any sort is very problematic, but that's what you would do with a baby.

In mid-stage dementia, my aunt fell and broke both a hip and wrist. She hospitalization and/or surgery progressed her into late stage and she was unable to recall the need to call for help or leave her soft cast alone.

The solution was a sitter 24/7. Because of limited funds, family mostly covered this.
