It is national assisted living week

I have never understood why memory care is always in an assisted living setting but it is what it is. This week is national assisted living week to celebrate residents and care givers.

Those of us who are spending our life savings and 401ks on our spouses assisted living are not being celebrated or recognized. Typical of what is is like to be a caregiver. We are the backbone of the system. We provide years of care for free and then when we can no longer do the work we pay all that we have for their care.

I proclaim 2027 to be caregiver year to recognizes all who have sacrificed their lives and financial futures so that someone with dementia is cared for. The care system depends upon our free labor and financial support.

Your point is well made. Caregivers not only are unpaid but unsupported in many ways. We are expected to be on duty 24/7 day after day, year after year. All the while we are left struggling to find a way to deal with intense emotions and the physical effects of what we must do. It is a thankless job that even the person we do it for is unaware of the sacrifices we make and the toll it takes. It is impossible yet we do it.

I think it is because of license categories . I believe all memory care facilities are licensed as assisted living ; it’s weird but google it and levels of care are explained
