Alzheimer’s and stomach issues

Hello all,

My mother continues to battle constipation, nausea, and gas on and off. Her appetite has definitely decreased, although she was never a big eater to begin with. We continue to encourage fluids and she eats mostly high fiber foods, but she is still having these issues more than not.

I also give her Metamucil daily.

Was wondering if anyone else has dealt with this and have any suggestions or remedies?

I am also planning on making an appointment with a GI doctor.

Thanks in advance!

it’s very common. Dementia is linked to gastrointestinal (GI) issues like constipation, gas, and nausea due to factors like the brain-gut axis, sedentary lifestyle, dehydration, and medication side effects. Sounds like you are doing all the right things. Maybe the GI doctor will have some recommendations.

Be careful with fiber. If she's not getting enough fluids, fiber can make things worse. Also make sure she's getting enough fats to lubricate the system.
