Good afternoon Rockers.
Lorita. What are we going to do with you? You said Darwin is 5 miles away, too far to hear you yelling for help. Please 🙏 keep a clear path in your house for you. And a phone close by and your alert button on. We have those little plug in lights all over the house.
I watched the morning news about the school/church shooting this morning. That was a very sad thing to happen, and the children were praying. It brought tears to my eyes.
GG. We survived the dust storm, it was one of the biggest monsoons in this area in years. We are about 20 miles fron the Phoenix airport, and there was some damage done there. The dust was so bad my SIL was stuck in the work parking lot for a few hours till he could see enough to drive. We had lots of wind, rain and dust blowing around our house, you could see nothing looking out the windows. We did not realize how bad it was till the next day. I guess if I knew it was bad, I would not have enjoyed it as much as I did.
Hugs Zetta

Good evening.
No falls, I repeat, no falls. We all need to be careful. I remember once when my mom was walking so slowly & I kept bugging her. She said she didn't want to fall. I pointed out that she was being so slow she was going to fall. There is a happy medium there.
I took DH back to the PCP today. She wasn't impressed with the pulse ox so r-rays and a nebulizer treatment were had immediately. And he was given a lecture to take the nebulizer 3's daily, 4 if needed. On top of all of his other inhalers / meds. By this time we left the office his pulse ox was better & we again had 4 new prescriptions. He doesn't feel bad until a coughing jag hits.
Where we're from Labor Day weekend is a VERY big deal. And its our high school reunion weekend also. DH hasn't paid any attention to it thus far. I had a Vrbo reservation that I've canceled. Thank goodness for trip insurance! I honestly could care less about the reunion, which is very odd for me. But a dear dear friend is having a party Sunday afternoon and I'm so very disappointed we won't be there. I just can't take DH on a trip when he's not his best. And continued bronchitis doesn't put him at his best. I really could cry about this, but he's more important. I was so looking forward to the change of scenery and such. And he's none the wiser. I'm telling myself maybe later on in the fall we'll make the trip. Of course everyone won't be there, but that's fine. We can go home, see a few people and come back. Before anyone asks, 587 miles, central KS.
That's all I know. I think we'll find a movie and let DH snooze through it. FYI - every time we've been into the office they've checked for Covid. Apparently its bad here. Dr said she's not sure DH didn't start off with Covid and turn into this long mess. Even though he keeps testing negative, she said the tests aren't prefect. Just sayin. So, let's be safe everyone.

I have a skinned place on my hand and a bruise on my thigh, otherwise pretty much okay. Zetta, Darwin is just five minutes away. I can see their house. The road is so bad it would be hard to get here now. We had 3/4 ths inch of rain today with heavy rain predicted for in the morning. Been in the sixties today. Been sort of quiet on the threat today. Hope everyone is okay. Going to watch tv s bit and go to sleep. Good night.

Lorita. I made a mistake, I met minutes, sorry about that. I knew he was close. 😁

No problem. Zetta, I'm glad he's close. Yesterday when I went down to check on the road My neighbor on the farm West of me drove up on his ATV. and we visited a while. He told me to call he or his wife if I needed something. I have talked with him on the phone and think I met him years ago. He is a disabled vet but gets around okay and not too old,- 60s probably.Hate that I'm getting older each day and not able to do things like I have always done. But. I guess everyone feels like that sometime. I think I need an ATV,- I miss the CW and Gator.
It's been a sad day in our Country because of the death of two young children and injuries of so many others plus three people in their 80s. When I was younger things like this never happened. We felt safe. Our Country and world is changing. I worry for the younger people.
Good night, again - just had some coffee and chocolate chip gelato so I'm good to go.
2 -
Lorita - a grasshopper sticking to my skin is just too much to contemplate. So gross.
I'm with you about getting older - I can still do a lot, but there are also many things I just can't do anymore. I don't like it.
Iris - I'm good with spiders. When I was little, my aunt always told us never to kill a spider, and to this day, I don't. I catch them and take them outside.
I'm glad Adam wasn't hurt.
HB - I had no idea there is a connection between vision loss and weight loss drugs. We'll just stay way away from those!
I can look at a praying mantis and see the elegance in it, but grasshoppers? No way. And there is one other bug (that shall go nameless) that I can barely even think about without shuddering.
Carl - I'm with you on ankle strengthening exercises. My ankles are my weakest link, so I'm forever doing things to strengthen them.
I also have little plug-in lights that come on at night. I'm not so worried about tripping and falling, but I am worried about walking into walls.
Eve - I'd never seen a June bug until this last spring. It was dead (thankfully) in the garage. Neither of us had ever seen one, so we took a photo of it so that we could ID it. Weird little creature. I'd like to not see one again, but I can't say it freaked me out either. I can't say I'm a fan of beetles, and I don't usually run into them.
As for eating insects? Nope, nope, nope.
Zetta - I thought of you with that big dust storm and wondered how you were doing. I'm glad all of you are okay. That must have been scary for your SIL having to wait it out in a car.
eaglemom - I'm sorry you had to cancel your plans, but I think you made the right choice. I'd have done the same.
I'm kind of concerned about covid vaccines for the fall. I qualify to get one because I'm over 65, but my s.o. is five years younger than me, so he doesn't have that. There are exceptions, and he's thinking he's going to hang his hat on "physical inactivity", which isn't entirely true, but it's not entirely false either. We've both managed to avoid covid so far (we both mask all the time when we're out. We don't mask when we're outside in the fresh air), and I'd like to keep it that way.
Combat Wednesday was good - lots of boxing and escrima. It's all becoming so much more fluid, and I'm really beginning to see how many of the boxing moves can also be escrima moves, and vice versa.
I had a lot of errands to run today, including a dentist appointment (which went well). I'm kind of winding down now …

June bugs are common in SW Missouri. When I picked blackberries, I would often pick a berry that had a June bug clinging to the far side. The bug would bug out with a buzz, making me drop the berry and jump a foot. One of my friends, at about age 13, found some June bugs passed out from eating fermented peaches under the tree in his yard, and tied a thread to one leg of one of them. When the beetle sobered up, my friend had a toy that flew in circles while he held the other end of the thread. The moral of this story is "Don't get drunk in public, especially around teenagers."
I guess this is just another heart-warming story of children playing outdoors in the good old days before there were video games.
Goodnight.

Judith is rocking a tank top! Way to go, Judith!
Zetta, that dust cloud that I saw looked like something from outer space! Your SIL was fortunate not to be driving. I saw a video of a woman driving with absolutely no visibility. Fortunately for her the wind let up a bit do she could see. But I turned it off, it was too much for me.
Eaglemom, does your DH bring up phlegm? If so, the nebulizer treatments should help. Have you noticed that? It's too bad that you have to miss your high school reunion this weekend.
One of my friends in my travel group came back from a trip to Spokane two weeks ago and came back with Covid. She is supposed to travel with me next week on another trip, I hope she tests negative soon.
GG, I had contemplated getting a Covid vaccination before my cruise but I didn't have time. I don't have time before my next trip either. I'll rely on masking and extensive hand-washing.
If a spider is inside my home I will kill it. I tried to move this big spider with the end of a broomstick, but it wouldn't stay on the broomstick.
There are big iridescent green fruit bottles around here. They are harmless to people but like to fly around our heads. My cat Simon used to catch them and fling them up in the air like they were little mice. I always would find dead one on my balcony. Sometimes one would still be alive, so I would set it on the ledge and let it fly away.
There was a praying mantis outside my front door one morning. I don't know how it got up to my second story door. I was afraid to touch it to move it downstairs, so I left it alone. Do they fly? It made its way away from my front door on its own.
I have to get up early, I'm hoing on the Metro tomorrow.

Lorita you asked how to I carry my phone on a lanyard. There is a little plastic piece with a ring that goes between the phone and the phone cover. I attach the lanyard to the little ring. Here is a picture of the little plastic piece with a paper clip to compare the size.

Good morning.
Iris— I hope mom is able to protect the vision in her "good" eye. At the time she was diagnosed with the damage to her optic nerve, the doc said she had a 30% life chance of losing vision in the other eye from the same cause. Complicating this is her AMD with geographic atrophy, which is progressing, albeit slowly because of the new injections for GA.
Zetta— That storm sounds terrifying. I'm glad your SIL did the sensible thing and waited it out.
Eaglemom— Sometimes it's frustrating to make the sensible adult choice. I'm sorry you're missing the reunion and trip to your hometown.
I hope your DH continues to respond well to the nebulizer treatments. Those things can be miraculous.
Carl— The stair heel drops are good, as are heel raises. When mom did PT for falls, the PT told us that strength training was important and that lateral moves make a huge difference in being able to recover balance and prevent the fall. Fingers crossed, she's not falling routinely these days.
Lorita— In addition to the device Iris posted, you can buy phone cases that have a lanyard system integrated into the case.
I hope the road situation improves soon. I'm sure you don't like the feeling of being trapped.

I'm up too damned early this morning. Today was meant to be a quiet day, but I need to drop DS off at the mechanic to collect his car. "Green boy the deer slayer" (what his friends call the Miata) got a new head gasket. I'll be happy to not have to drive him to or from class. I also have to run an errand for mom.
I had my hematology appointment yesterday which led to a whole bunch of bloodwork with a follow up scheduled for next month. I stopped at their preferred lab as I needed a smear. My orders weren't to the techs liking and she proceeded to have a very unprofessional hissy fit which was quite awkward. Her colleague was kind and assisted her in making the necessary tweaks. TBH, I wasn't happy with having her do the stick, but it worked out OK.

Coming down the mountain yesterday on the way to the Amish again. It’s absolutely beautiful up here.
Iris, the campground is laid out so that we are surrounded by trees. There are 5 different camping areas with some set aside for primitive camping. You asked about our goats: they are considered “meat” goats which is why I cannot bear to sell them. Like Lorita, I am too tender hearted for the “business” side of farming.
Eagle I’m sorry you’re missing your trip and I hope your DH continues to improve. Prayers for healing ❤️🩹
Headed home today. This was a much needed getaway for us. Saturday is the Labor Day swim party for all the grandchildren. Confessing here and now that I will be committing cardinal sin as I plan to BUY potato salad and desserts.
Stay safe today everyone ❤️

Morning, I've.been awake since about 4:30. Stormy was restless and just couldn't settle down. I got up,let him.outside, then cleaned his ears- flushed them, then dried them and put in drops for ear mites. I found one bottle of the drops but not the others. I know Mike left three or four. I have a big baggie with all kinds of meds but guess I put all but one somewhere else. Both of them are asleep now and I'm wide awake.
Lots of rain north of here, guess we will get ours this afternoon. It is scary to be unable to get out if need be.. Years ago we were snowed in (this has happened a few times). I was worried that I would have to get Charles out to the hospital so Darwin came over and broke out our driveway and the road to.his house. About the same time the County.used a dozer to clear another road (they were breaking out all the roads). It gets hairy out here sometimes.
Iris, thanks for the information about the lanyard.. I have a flip phone so it wouldn't work for my.phone. I keep it in my purse if I go somewhere and in my pocket at home.. Normally I'm wearing pants or a patio dress with.big pockets but the dress I had on the other day had slanted pockets and it slipper out.
Eagle, sorry about your trip.but maybe later you can go visit.
Spiders scare me. I was biten on the front of my thigh years ago during the night. The bite area kept getting bigger to the point I felt like I had to.hold it so it wouldn't fall off. Went to the ER but don't remember what they did. Those big black and yellow ones are scary but I don't bother them. Judith says they're good spiders. Normally they appear in the fall but there's one on the porch.now and lots of egg sacs. I do kill other kinds if they're in the house.
I saw a June Bug on the outside.of the screen in the kitchen yesterday. I used to call my BIL June Bug when I was a little kid.
GPs are sound asleep now so that's good. Sheena isn't eating too well lately. Got some different feed but still isn't. They do get a packet of Moist 'n Meaty and devour that, also milk bones. I have to watch be wise they will eat catfood.
There is heavy flooding north of here so hope we don't get that. Our rain will be close to noon. Weatherman just said some of our storms later today could be severe.
GG, I don't like beetles or any kind of bugs. There is a beetle you see out in pastures called dung beetles, I think. They make a ball out of cattle feces, turn around with their back feet on the ball and push it with their front feedback to somewhere. Really fun toy looking.
JeriLynn, glad you all were able to get away for a little rest. The picture is beautiful- reminds me of views you see along the Talimena Drive, from Talihina , Okla. To Mena, Ark. I love potato salad, chunky or smooth..Mother made the creamy kind but I have always made what I call German Potato Salad, chunky. I should make some.
News just showed people rescuing three newborn kittens trapped in a storm drain. They got them out and used a hair dryer to dry and warm them. Then placed them with a mother cat who had kittens at the animal shelter. See, there are lots of good people. We see lots of stories like that.
I better quit. I have written too much. I need cranberry-orange juice!

Forgot to mention -I have a couple of those p!ug in night lights that come on in the dark. I can rotate the direction the light shines. Had one in in the bedroom last night.
Up to 5" of rain North of here. Darwin just called. He didn't get much sleep last night but told me if I need him to call and he would get here if he had to walk. That's a good neighbor for sure.
I need to put the battery charger on the PU.but doubt it would be a good idea if it's rainy.

The rain has made it to Tulsa. I filled the water tank and filled a bird feeder with sunflower seeds, then put some on the railing for the squirrels. They get into that feeder, too. There are two tiny hummingbirds around their feeder so have some more feed cooling for them.

We are expecting about a quarter inch of that rain, but most of it will pass to the south, unfortunately.
I had a lunch date with a former coworker, but she put me off to next week, so I'll go eat spaghetti at the senior center.
Eagle, sorry you're missing the party.
Iris, some mantis have fully developed wings and some don't. There is more than one species of mantis. They are all predators, and people actually buy them for their gardens. They won't eat the veggies, and they will eat all the insects they can hold.

one ant…got to get the hole plugged up…keep forgetting!

Good afternoon
Feeling grateful today for having found this community. Not a day goes by that I learn valuable tips, find resources, or even just have fond memories rekindled.
My father’s family lived in Warrensburg MO and while I never lived there I visited often. When I first started going I was amazed at how lush and green everything was.
Lorita - What a blessing to have such a good neighbor. Our nearest neighbor is amazing and has offered to take AJ (husband) on short outings to grab a burger now and then. It’ll be a nice change for AJ and a break for me.
The only things I draw the line at out here are the rattlesnakes. Big nope. Usually see a few every summer.
Off to roast and freeze some Hatch chiles then cut up and freeze fresh peaches for ice cream making and baking.
Stay safe and enjoy the day ~Eve

What hole? Where the ants are coming in?

Next door neighbor just dropped off some tomatoes and cucumbers. They're flying to California today to visit their son, DIL and grandchild for a couple of weeks.
0 -
Carl, when I wss growing up,in the summer there was always a bowl of sliced cucumbers and onions in vinegar and water on the table at mealtime.
0 -
Those are good, I've had it recently. I don't have any onions so I plan to make cucumber and tomato salad.
0 -
Eve, we do learn such interesting and useful information. HB just posted about how lateral moves are good to help us in maintaining our balance. Do you have your own peach trees? Peach ice cream and peach dessert
0 -
Peach ice cream and peach desserts are yummy. (My finger slipped again.)
HB, are you on any medication or nutritional supplements for your low platelets?
JeriLynn, the scenery is beautiful. There are cooks and bakers who make their living preparing tasty food for us, why should we deprive them of their heart's desires? I have been known to buy an entire Thanksgiving dinner first the family.
Years ago Oprah had a show on how we get our beef meat. It was interesting.
Carl, my Southern relatives loved cucumbers, they were in every meal.
Lorita, my cat Adam has dirty ears, I will have to clean them, he doesn't like the cleaning.
Today I went with the seniors on a group trip to the LAX/Metro Transit Station. This is the newly opened station that connects by shuttle bus to LAX. There is anticipation that many people who will be arriving for the upcoming World Cup and the Olympics will be able to use public transportation when they arrive at the airport. Here are some pictures.
LAX/Metro Transit Center
This sculpture represents forms of transit, including a space vehicle. This artwork will welcome visitors when they arrive from the airport.
Does this look like a space ship?
The food kiosk is all computer operated.
This mechanical arm will grab your choice for you. I didn't have a chance to see it operate.

Free Shuttle bus to LAX airport—there is space for luggage, including large pieces.
In addition to the Metro, there are buses to many cities in Los Angeles county. Your relatives can pick you up at a local bus stop, they don't have to come all the way to the airport to pick you up.
The Metro Station is clean, with free clean restrooms. There is a Customer Service desk with human personnel, also Metro Ambassadors to assist passengers.
There are many types of workers on the Metro to assist riders.
We had a lunch at a restaurant where all the dishes are ready in a refrigerator.
We choose our food and take it to the counter. They offer sandwiches, wraps and salads. This will be one of the new ways of delivering food service in the future, especially in urban areas.
There were Post-it notes on a bulletin board of prepaid meals for anyone who didn't have money to take for a free meal. I'm sorry I didn't take a picture, because it is a good idea.
Welcome to LA!

Good afternoon/evening porch friends
Our follow-up call with the neurologists associate was postponed from today until next Tuesday, but we have an in person appointment tomorrow as my husband is experiencing leg pain. I need to do better with my own care and am overdue for one fairly important exam.
JeriLynn - decades ago I made potato salad for my then husband. Apparently it didn’t go over well as he suggested I never do that again! He’s a terrific person and to this day we’re still good friends. I never made potato salad again after that… store bought it is!
Carl - Nice of the neighbors to share their bounty. My cucumbers have done well this year but I’ll be visiting the farmers market tomorrow for tomatoes. I’m a lazy cook so I simply slice them up and marinate them in Italian salad dressing.
Iris - I’m enjoying your pics, thank you! The space ship looks like someone assembled dinosaur bones without knowing what the animal looked like ;)
I don’t have peach trees because my horses have the run of our property and they’d beat me to the fruit. Luckily there’s a local grower with a roadside stand.
The German Shepherd has summoned me for his pre- dinner walk.
Take care and be well,Eve

Glad I .missed that Oprah show. Iris. Can't stand to think about that.. The pictures are ǹice- nothing like that in my little part of Oklahoma.
Eve, same here about the fruit.. We have two.Asian pear trees and the girls love them. I try to make it to the trees every day to step on the fallen pears so the girls won't try to swallow the smaller ones whole and choke.
We had another three quarters of an inch of rain. 2.5 total, then the sun came out and it was beautiful. Had a short nap so plan to.go to sleep early tonight.
Iris, I bet it is hard to.clean Adam's ears. Surprisingly the GPs are pretty good about it. I put in the cleaner fluid, then get all the liquid out with kleenex, then put in the drops. Bsrclee, our.little Shih Tzu, always had too much wax in his ears so had to.cleanse his, too.
See you all tomorrow..Good night

Carl - June bugs make a sound? I'd only seen a dead one, so I don't know what they sound like, or how they move.
Iris - I'm with you, I mask whenever I'm in a room. I still keep a bottle of hand sanitizer in my car, so when I get back inside of the car (from a trip to the gym, the grocery store, etc.) the first thing I do is sanitize my hands. Then I wash them when I get home.
The only bugs I kill on contact are mosquitoes and moths. If I see them, they are toast.
Those photos of the LAX/Metro are great! I haven't seen it in person yet - very, very nice. The sculptures are a bit odd though.
HB - I hate it when my "quiet days" turn out to be anything but.
JeriLynn - very pretty drive. Store bought is okay!
Lorita - A spider bite like that would scare me too. I've only been bitten once (eons ago), and it swelled, but it came down pretty quickly.
Eve - I felt (and feel) the same way you do about this site. When I first started caring for my sister, I was in so far over my head, but I learned so much here. I'm grateful to this day.
Yes to hatch chilies!!! We also have a small pile of them that we roasted and then put in the freezer.
I cast no stones your way with your potato salad. An ex-boyfriend of mine teases me to this day about my pancakes. They come out looking like pyramids instead of flat - like a pancake. I don't know why. But this is why I tend to steer clear of the kitchen.
Tomorrow is my last day of boot camp! I'm pretty sure I'm going to survive. He definitely made me work, but I'm happy that I'm capable.

Good morning! One more warm, dry day in the Ozarks. We did not receive any of yesterday's rain, beyond a sprinkle that didn't warrant turning on the windshield wipers.
June bugs fly by beating short wings very rapidly, creating a loud buzz. Childhood encounters with bumblebees made me afraid of sudden loud buzzing, but it would startle anyone to pick a berry and have a buzzing bug in hand as well.
