    Good morning All.

Gothic G— DS and DH had watched that a while back. They really got into it. It's funny, we were in the town where DH used to work. It was a big chemical company campus with a plant and labs for scaling up products as well as research labs. After he retired, they were bought by Dow which closed down most of the campus in 2010. The abandoned parking lots looks like something in the series. There's a small tree growing in DH's formerly designated spot.

When I went to pick up the Hatch chilis, they were gone. Do they have a specific season? I'll be near the Reading Terminal Market on the 25th and would be able to get some there, I'm sure.

Mint— My friend in South Jersey is also having an "ok" growing season. Her tomatoes are better than last year, most of her peppers are good, but the cukes are gnarly.

Eve— I hope your delivery goes seamlessly. I hope you enjoy your new laundry set.

Beth— I think sometimes trees have a certain lifespan even when planted in a location that is ideal for them. The builder of my neighborhood planted a lot of white pines and Bradford pears which are on their last legs. I have about 250' along my backyard that was landscaped with about 10 white pines, 6 sand cherries and a locust. The sand cherries have been gone for at least 15 years and I'm down to 2 white pines. The locust, however, is majestic at this point.

Lorita— See, even your tablet doesn't want you out cosplaying arborist. "Toe rope" is a pretty funny autocorrect. Last week I sent my niece (mom's successor POA) a quick text that mom had participated in a Penn Memory Center Study which got autocorrected to read:

"so Nana was flagged to by Penn Medicine to participate in a study aimed at creating a new cognitive screwing tool for PCPs"

I swear I wrote "screening". Honest.

Iris— I hope you're feeling better soon. I'm reading about an uptick in cases because of summer and travel which is expected to worsen as more kids return to the classroom. I'm also reading that the newest variant is causing significant sore throats. Did you have that as well?

Jerilynn— I knew you were recently married when you landed here, but I didn't realize just how newlywed. Congratulations in advance!

Your trip sounds lovely. I am impressed you were able to use a mobile hot spot successfully with remote tech support. I can't get mom to text me a photograph or consult her phone's calendar which I meticulously populate with her many appointments.

We went to Marshall's last week and I saw a cute Apple Watch compatible band which she bought. When I got to her house, I put the new strap on and put a new bumper on it as well. Over the weekend she mentioned that her phone wouldn't charge since I put the new strap on it. I couldn't imagine how the strap would impact charging, so I said I'd look at it Sunday when I picked her up for dinner. I walked into her kitchen and placed the watch on the charger and it immediately started to charge. She came over and insisted I put it on again so she could see how I did it. Turns out, she was trying to charge her watch with the lightening cable that goes to the iPhone. She and her 88-year-old neighbor spent 30 minutes trying to find a jack into which they could plug the cable. Yikes.

She also left her doggie bag (massive baked potato and 1/2 of a $$$ steak) in the backseat of my car when we dropped her off Sunday. I didn't find it until about 4pm Monday. Yuck. Still, it's better than the time she left a raw filet mignon in a Ziploc in DS's car, in July, and he didn't discover it until 4 days later.
    ___________________________________________________________________________________________

Things should be mostly quiet today. I'm thinking BLTs for dinner as I got a couple of gorgeous Jersey beefsteaks and some lovely sourdough bread.

I'm still waiting on the rest of my blood tests to hit the patient portals. I know some of the vitamin ones can take close to a week, but so far only Hep C and Heme profile are back. There were at least 8 vials drawn by the visibly annoyed phlebotomist.

Morning, no problem. JeriLynm, I nerd to be reminded that I can't or shouldn't do certain things anymore. I've been caught standing m cabinets to paint upper ones but no more. Waiting for my grocery delivery do better get the GPs inside. I don't have a smart phone and do not want one. Guess I'm behind the times but that's okay.

Darwin's wife is having dentsl surgery this morning and he isn't feeling well. His daughter is going with them. Back later.

Groceries delivered, wiped down and frozen and refrigerated items put away. Filled the water tank and fed the birds and squirrels. Fed the cats and gave Stormy his medicine wrapped in Cheese. I have to give Sheena a little cheexe, too, or she would feel left out.

No snakes seen so all is good. Girls still out grazing. It a beautiful, cool morning. I have had my juice and working on hot tea now. I don't feel too good this morning so tree !imb will wait. Guess it isn't going anywhere.. Cannot figure out what happened. Saw another small limb down in the yard so maybe we had some wind and I slept through it. My.back hurts so I'm about done for today.

Just heard it's open carry in Washington DC now.

    Good morning all

HB - fresh Hatch Chile season typically runs from August through September. I had heard that it started early this year so I wonder if it’s already wound down. I picked some up a week ago but they weren’t the freshest.

Thanks for the positive thoughts on the delivery. I imagine I’ll be glad I did this now since there may be challenges as my husband’s disease progresses.

Mmm, a BLT for dinner sounds great. Though I don’t have bacon or tomatoes. Time to shop.

    ******

The posts about organizing pictures brought back a fond and funny memory. After my Pop and step mom passed my step brother and I set out to sort through boxes of pics. None, not one, were labelled! They were cool pics of our families from the 20’s 30’s and 40’s. We just didn’t have a clue which were his family or mine, so we each took a box home. To this day I don’t know who’s in the pics, but neither of us wanted to throw them away.

Lorita - I hope you’re feeling better soon. You’ve done so much already and I’m just having my morning coffee!

Must have had a brief rain early morning because the air smells wonderful and it’s cooler.

Well, after a few hours I am now down to "just" 10,984 photos on my iPhone! From over 14,000….this is not a rapid process.

If you want to know how many photos on your iPhone, tap settings > general > about and it tells you how many songs, videos, photos, apps, capacity and available capacity. Just FYI!

I do next to nothing on my iPhone. I very rarely, text, no email, no browser and I have been known to tell folks that I do not have a cell phone…lol

a continuation of lovely night showers persists.

Iris…When your Google Photos storage is full, you should first free up space by

deleting unwanted photos, videos, and screenshots

    especially those in the trash.

Last weekend it came to me that there are really a lot of things I can not do any longer….sigh

Me too, Judih.. I used to be able to do most anything but no longer with all the techy stuff. No rain here yet but it is cloudy.

Ordered and received a new tv for the LR. Now to see if direct will come and.hook it up. I used to be able to do that before direct tv or dish. But not now. Back then you plugged it in, connected to antenna and that was it. Now they have to do more. Feeling a bit better but not enough to go anywhere or do much. Did get everything put away.

Just heard the Pres. Is.now questioning the effectiveness of the vaccine as cases rise.

    good afternoon

it is the same here, taking forever to ripen. One of my plants not even started ripening yet. The ones that are ripening, including even the cherry tomatoes you can’t have them in the house time till they’ll start getting black spots on them. Definitely not been a good year.

Iris, thank you for all the good reminders. I usually don’t start wearing my mask till the end of October but maybe I should get it out as I go to the grocery store. I’m very thankful for the mask, but I’m also tired of wearing it. I get spoiled during the summertime. I do not want to take it in to where my mom is & I don’t carry it out of there either.

Lorita I am not going to apologize, I am going to say to you do not be out there by yourself, pulling down a tree limb, do not please. I used to help my dad do that. I’d pull while he cut. But I was much quicker and more agile than and I trusted my dad.

it’s a beautiful day here, but guess I won’t get to work outside. I went to the attorney this morning and took care of some personal things that need care of. Now I guess I’ll go to the grocery store. I’m gonna try to be quick so maybe I can work a little outside but I’m guessing I won’t be quick. I already feel tired lol.

    Happy anniversary, JeriLynn! 🍷

I remember reading medical records of tree trimmers who had been injured on the job. That is a pretty dangerous occupation! I used to fell trees, but I don't do it anymore or even climb ladders. I don't understand computers anymore either, unless DOS commands are still a thing. C:\ anyone? It's a good thing I'm not looking for a job.

GG, I didn't stay up last night by choice. I slept from 10:30 to 12:30, then was awake for several hours, then slept until 8:30. 😴

I am seeing more masks at the grocery store and the senior center, worn by older women.

I have discovered a tasty guacamole dip called Wholly Guacamole. It can be had in six-packs of two-ounce containers, which is great when eating alone. 🥑

Eve, your comment about BLTs reminds me of the bitter old Great Depression joke: If we had bacon we could have BLTs if we had tomatoes.

Good afternoon. I slept poorly but I'm feeling better today. I have less coughing, now more runny nose and sneezing. The first time I had Covid in 2023, the coughing lasted for three months! But eventually resolved.

Right now I'm sitting on my balcony, enjoying the fresh air. I don't seem to have much appetite, having eaten mostly soup, applesauce and tea for the past few days. Covid is supposed to take away the sense of smell, but I tested myself and my sniffer is good.

Lorita, as far as the vaccines not helping, it matters as to what percentage of the intended population is vaccinated for herd immunity. The urgency about getting vaccinated has declined. Perhaps the focus needs to be on vaccinating the most susceptible people, older adults, those with chronic illnesses, and those living in congregate living facilities.

I would like to know how many people infected with Covid are needing to be hospitalized. In other words, is Covid still life-threatening to older adults? Influenza is life-threatening to certain populations. So is RSV.

Actually, if I didn't know I had Covid, I would think this is just a summer cold.

I posted too soon. I'm having a coughing spell right now, I've got to go.

Iris— It's the OG (@jfkoc "original gangster") variants of COVID that caused the loss of sense of smell. Later versions didn't do this so much.

I thought the purpose of the vaccine was to keep people from getting "as sick" as if they hadn't been vaccinated. Basically, to prevent hospitalizations and death.

Iris, glad you are able.to be outside to enjoy the fresh air. Are you taking medication for covid? Just rest and sleep to.heal. I doubt we will be hearing about those ststs, Iris.

It just began to rain so tv reception is gone. I was watching Wagon Train so won't know how it ended. Zetta, it is about a Priest-one older woman about to pass away and another trying to give birth. If that is the one you see today would you tell me.how it ended? I will look st the tree and if the limb is still attached will leave it alobe. If it isn't and things looks okay, we'll see. Bryon took down a limb that was broken up high and still attached so he might be able to take care of it.Tree work is very expensive The work I had done last year was $8500.

Carl, I will look for Wholly Guacamole. I.buy avocados and always lose at least some of them after being cut. Is it frozen or just refrigerated and what is in it? Hope you get a good nights sleep tonight.

Reception is back but Wagon Train is off.

WG contains Hass avocados, distilled vinegar, and 2% or less of water, jalapeno peppers, salt, dehydrated onion, and granulated garlic. It is marked "use or freeze by 10/9/25" so you can freeze some if you like. They pack it fresh in Mexico, probably right by the avocado orchards.

There is a spicier version that has more pepper, but I prefer the milder version, plus the mild is the one that comes in the small package.

Thanks. I'll probably get some sleep, but it may be fragmented again.

Happy anniversary, JeriLynn!! I hope you guys have a blast. It sounds like a fun trip.

I'm with you about "things I used to be able to do, and now cannot." I can still do much, but like you, I'm now more careful about climbing on things, and I'm kind of sulky about my cataracts (that I have to deal with this year).

HB - Hatch chilies do have a season, and it seems to be a bit shorter this year. Usually we have them through most of September, but the displays are looking a little skimpy now. I'd go out and get them asap if you're curious about them. They're tasty.

8 vials of blood??? What is this, The Abominable Dr. Phibes?? (Vincent Price drained Terry-Thomas of all of his blood via phlebotomy tools). And yeah, whenever I have blood drawn, that is exactly where my mind goes.

I've been reading about the uptick in covid cases - so I'll continue to be vigilant about wearing my mask.

Eve - That's kind of where I am with family photos. There are so many from the 40s and 50s and I have no idea who many of the people are. And there's only one person left of my parent's generation who I can ask. Hopefully I'll have a stack I can take with me when I go for a visit later on this month - and hopefully she'll know. If not, I'll still keep them; I couldn't possibly throw them away.

Beth - You're amazing! That's a lot of photos go through.

Iris - those are all the right questions to be asking about covid. I don't have a lot of faith that we'll get accurate info from this iteration of the CDC.

Carl - I had a feeling that's why you were up. I went to sleep right after Death Guild (which was great last night). I paid the piper this morning for that - and I'll be going to sleep at a decent hour tonight.

I had a lot of errands to run today and got everything done, so that was good. I managed to get myself into the gym, which was also good. And we had deviled eggs!

Regarding tree trimming - when a derecho came through, we ended up losing 4 trees. None totally came down on their own; we had to get a tree service to do it. Check out the photo below. No cherry picker - he climbed up!

Hi, I have been out of internet service for about six hours. I felt isolated! The outage was pretty widespread according to the provider. We were right on the edge - no idea what happened.

.Beth, the tree service we have used for years is made up mostly of a family. They have the cherry picker, chipper and trucks. I watched some of them taking down my eim but left to take Sheena to the vet. They were really working hard. I used to be able to climb trees and bales of hay but had trouble getting down. Three rungs of a ladder is my limit. It was rainy so didn't go look at the tree today.

Carl, WM does have the wholly avocados. I didn't see any in the small containers without jalapenos. The vinegar must be what keeps it green. I put lemon juice on what I have left each time. I think I may try it next time I get groceries. I wish we had a Braums but the nearest one is 25 miles away. Our vet applied for a franchise but it wasn't approved because our little town probably couldn't support one. I.hope you can sleep well tonight.

I may go to WM tomorrow to try to get a receipt for the tv that quit working to send to Vizio. I need to start taking the GPs for walks. Mike says Stormy has arthritis and I'm sure Sheena does, too. After he finishes his Prednisone they can have the meds for arthritis. I give them chews for it but he says they don't work. Good to have internet back. You don't realize how much you uśe it until you don't have it.

    Good night, sleep tight.

HB, good to know about the original Covid causing loss of smell.

The medication Paxlovid is supposed to prevent severe illness and complications in high-risk patients. I asked about it but decided I didn't need it, since the fever had already resolved and the continuous coughing was over.

I think a good public health tactic would be to vaccinate high-risk people with current local variants, encourage masking and hand hygiene for high-risk, prescribe Paxlovid as needed and avoid congregating in enclosed spaces.

This bout of Covid for me is less severe than in 2023. Today I had sporadic coughing jags, but a lot of sneezing and runny nose. I ate some solid food this afternoon.

In 2023 after the initial acute phase resolved, I continued to have coughing for three months! I hope I don't go through that again.

Beth, that guy—no helmet, no gloves, no work boots—I see that here in Cali too.

Lorita, I have never climbed any tree. In high school we had to climb a rope. That was the extent of my climbing experience.

It's terrible to lose internet service!

HB, does every smartphone have a "hotspot"? I have a Samsung. I have heard people talk about hotspots.

I'm going to try to sleep now. Good night.

Good early morning. This is my normal wake-up time but it's really dark at the moment. I noticed it was fully dark by around 8pm last night as well.

Lorita— IMDB has a short synopsis of most movies and television episodes. I'm not sure if it'd answer your Wagon Train question, but it's worth checking out-

Tree work is insanely pricey and generally not rewarding as the same money would be on some other home project.

Carl— I hope you slept better last night.

I pick up with WG in the little cups, too. I like a little guac with my nachos and the boys do not. I had no idea I could freeze the stuff— that will be life changing. My fancy grocery sells the spicy in the little portions— I don't like it nearly as well as the mild and I generally like some warmth. I wish Herdez had the smaller cups— their guac is like tableside-prepped in a good restaurant.

Gothic G— Does your mind go to Marathon Man at the dentist, too? Yeah, 8 vials and not the little ones. At least they weren't like the massive ones they use for mom's cultures; those look like the wine bottles one gets in economy of a flight. And they do 2— one on each arm.

Eve— It's a shame you don't know who those folks are. I always feel badly tossing photos from other people. We did a lot of this when we cleaned out my aunt's compound in Maine when she went to memory care. Her DH and BIL were the last of their family on both sides and inherited boxes and boxes of pictures. Some of the frames and albums were fabulous. I attempted to deliver them to the surviving brother but only got them to the CCRC hours before the man died and the receptionist wouldn't take them off my hands. Grrr. I did keep a couple of my uncle as a child— his mom had his pictures done every year at a fancy studio where they posed him on a bike for some reason.

Iris— Some of the high-risk folks don't mount a good response to the vaccine. I'm thinking the elderly and immune compromised/deficient. Vaccinating those around them would provide them more protection. My mom will get the vaccine but she's most likely to catch COVID from me and I'm at risk because my DS spends the Christmas season on packed trains with singing children. If he could avoid it or have a lower viral load when infected, mom would be safer.

Your phone itself should have a hot spot option. This is how you'd access it.

Your mobile plan would need to include this service, and you'd need to have enough data in your plan or pay overages. Streaming multimedia content can really burn through both data and battery. This explains it better than I can,

    ___________________________________________________________

I have a fun day planned. Mom sees her psychiatrist at 11:30. The office is near Costco, so I'll run over and fill up my car. This is the one appointment I don't attend. After, we're going to my bestie's house as she'll be babysitting the twins for a couple hours. She's very anxious for me to see them. Mom'll ride along but that OK, babies are her favorite thing ever.

One interesting aside. Mom's psych prescribes her a newer SSRI called Trintellix off-label for her ADHD. I read of a study looking at this medication for early-stage dementia to improve cognition performance and daily function. It'll be interesting to see if something comes of this. I have heard of other ADHD meds being used in early stages for some people.

Yesterday wasn't so fun. I felt as if I got absolutely nothing done. DH has procrastinated on the curtain rod and decided it had to come down yesterday. He couldn't rehang it because we could not locate a hammer (I have 2) or the electric drill. I found the old broken drill that should have been tossed a decade ago, but not the newer one and no drill bits either. So annoying. I suspect my drill is at mom's— I sent DS over with it and a bulb digger to plant last year. I bet it's still there. She said she does have a drill I can borrow (probably mine) but when I went to go get it my car wouldn't start. I was able to get a AAA service call in under 30 minutes and a new battery installed but never made it to get the drill. I'll get the drill and maybe get to the curtain rod tomorrow. I think I want new panels. Maybe a print of some kind.

    Good morning.

Iris, so glad your Covid is milder and that you are feeling better. I am so sorry you missed your trip! At least you didn't miss Alaska, Scandinavia or Kenya.

GG, I've watched several episodes of "Life after People." Pretty interesting. Thanks so much for sharing about this series. There is a FB page called "Abandoned Iowa." People post about places that are abandoned, including pictures. Also, there are YouTube channels where people post about Urban exploration ie Urb Ex. They will go through the grounds of abandoned amusement parks, hotels, houses, malls….really any place you can imagine. They sometimes encounter persons squatting on the property, and once they got frightened when exploring a movie theater and there were other people. They locked themselves in a room until the thread, real or perceived, was gone.

Our weather has turned cooler also. We've been able to turn off the A/C and have the windows open, which I love.

Eve, I imagine you have received your new washer and dryer by now. Hope you like them and that they last a long time.

Eagle, is your DH doing better? He's had a lengthy cough for sure! That must be exhausting.

Carl, speaking of the earlier days of computers…I took a job in the very early 90's and had a computer that used D-Base for collecting data. The staff provided me with a mouse and a mouse pad, and I didn't know what it was for! 🐭 WG sounds good. I like guacamole but if I make it, typically it'll turn brown before we can get it eaten.

JeriLynn, hope you enjoy your travels. There is some beautiful country down south. And Happy, happy anniversary to you and your hubby!

Lorita, I hope you get your tv and refrigerator soon. You have waited a very long time!

HB, it sounds like you will have a better day today.

Sunday after church we stopped at a roadside stand and bought a Blackjack watermelon and 2 dozen ears of sweet corn. I processed and froze most of the corn.

Yesterday I made Target and Walgreen's runs, and drove a friend who just had a TKR to her PT appointment.

Tomorrow is exercise class, prayer group and swimming.

Next week is vacation! We plan to go to Estes Park, CO.

Everyone is busy, busy, busy. Somedays I'm busy all day but for the life of me I can't figure out what I've done all day!!! DH's coughing has finally gotten somewhat better. He's a long way from "normal" but I'll take less coughing. However, what I'm noticing is he's very blah. He's quite content to read, work on a puzzle or a wooden model. He hasn't even wanted to participate in our daily Zoom meeting this week, which he loves. I hope this is all part of his lung healing.

Iris I have to get paper work to our physician for our travel insurance, like you do. I'm certain hoping she'll get it filled out and back to me in a timely manner. The physicians page is one page, but I have to provide multiple documents on travel, etc. I sure hope I get the money back. And you too Iris.

I have photos on my phone, around the 4000k mark. But I have it set up that it goes immediately to the cloud. That way I'll always have those pictures. Now, I have, I believe 3 totes full of hard copy photographs of my parents, grandparents and great grandparents. Probably a third are marked - but Uncle Bob - on the back on a photo taken in the 40's still means nothing to me. I've often thought about how we take pictures now - all on our phones. We don't have photos to hand down to our kids. I find that sad. I can go pull a tote out and grab a handful of pictures and feel a connection to my past, to my parents / grandparents that this generation will not have.

Its a specular day & I need to get outdoors. I have a project I'd love to complete. I just need to spray paint part of it & its done. No wind and blue sky tells me that today's the day to finish it.

Let's be safe out there everyone.

    Photos…we used to have albums!

I intend to get pics digitized but first I need to eliminate and organize. Then thumb drives can be shared. I will mostly keep pics of people. Uncle Bob would end up in the trash…lol

I also thought it would be fun to make each family member a collage to hang.

Afternoon, I went to town and didn't like it! I went to WM to try to.get a receipt for tv I.bought last October. Took three people trying to figure out how to get one but couldn't. I ordered it on WM.com but it came from our local store. I guess I will call WM.com to see if I can get one that way. .Doubt it. I bought another so hope it works when I can get it set up. Everything seems so easy but when something untoward happens, it becomes hard. Really getting tired of all this.

Found some of the biggest, prettiest peaches I have ever seen but hard as a rock! Got a couple for me and took a couple to D and wife plus a box of face masks for him. I saw very few people wearing masks. That should change.

Passed the road grader going and coming,- he had to stop and move over for me each time. Bet there were some choice words spoken. The roads are too narrow for more than one car unless you get way over.

It's getting pretty warm out there so glad to be home watching Wagon Train, Zetta. Sounds like everyone is having a.busy day. Enjoy and don't work too hard. Back later.

My wife bought two collage frames many years ago and filled them with cropped family photos. The one over my library table has pictures of my older son on his first tricycle and in his first car, my younger son on his first tricycle and at his Eagle Scout Court of Honor, me on the beach at Malibu, and others. Photos like that are invaluable. I cleaned out my mother's house when she went to a nursing home, and she and I spent one day going through her old photos and identifying them. That day was one of the best times she had after leaving her home.

HB, I hope you threw out the old drill. I am gradually decluttering my house, and I count any trash tossed as a thing accomplished.
