Ron, you have a thoughtful way to remember Lou and to let the younger ones know her more.

Lorita and GG, let me know how you sleep with your mattress topper. I slept pretty well on a 3" mattress topper at the sleep lab when I had my sleep apnea study.

I went to the LA County Fair today. Let me tell you about my day. First of all, we rode two hours on the Metro, stopping at Union Station for a bathroom break. I had reported earlier that the Metro was better. Well, I have to retract that statement. Today, there were people eating and drinking on the Metro, which is not allowed. I didn't see anyone smoking or vaping. I saw only two Metro police and only two Metro Ambassadors. And worse of all, I saw a young man writing graffiti on the train exterior just outside my window when we were stopped at a station! How rude!

At Union Station, which is also a station for Amtrak, I was disappointed and embarrassed at the state of the women's restroom. The toilet was gouged--I don't know how porcelain could get gouged in normal use. None of the soap dispensers worked. Three out of eight toilets were out of service. The area outside the restroom was poorly lit. I thought to myself, this restroom is not ready for international visitors. When I was in Italy, all the restrooms were clean, everything worked, and they were well lit. I feel embarrassed for travelers to come here to this facility. Union Station is on the process of installing new artwork, which is well lit and beautiful. IME, they should devote the art funds to improving the restroom facilities to a standard level of functionality.

    1000007340.jpg

Art work at Union Station—there were about 20 stunning panels.

We arrived at the Fairplex station and rode a free bus shuttle to the Fairgrounds. Our Metro cost was $.75, versus a parking cost of $40. The entry fee was $15 or a donation of 5 canned goods. I paid $15 because I didn't want to carry heavy cans, but many people did bring cans.

Some of my group walked all over the Fair, including seeing baby pigs and other farm animals and llamas. I and another woman stayed in the Home and Culinary Hall, where we viewed amazing homemade creations, art work and tablescapes. We also watched a demonstration on how to make jams and jellies, basically how to can anything.

    1000007343.jpg

The creations were quilts, crocheted and knitted items, other handmade items. There were various themes. This was the Americana section.

    1000007346.jpg

Lorita, I thought of you when I saw this glass mosaic bird feeder house. I don't know if it actually opened for birdseed, but it certainly is beautiful.

    1000007348.jpg

Turkey legs—standard food for Fairs--I didn't eat a turkey leg, I had a corn dog.

    1000007349.jpg

"My Favorite Candy Store"—candy, as far as the eye can see! Sold by the bucket.

    1000007352.jpg

Irwindale Brew Yard—produces beer, seltzer and soft drinks--open to the public.

This was my day. The next trip will be to the La Brea Tar Pits before they close for two years for renovation.

Good morning. Sunny and lovely today. And I have nothing I must do aside from laundry.

Ron— I hope a unit opens for your soon. Are you looking at a 1-bedroom? Will you have space to prepare meals if the mood strikes you?

I love how you chose to celebrate dear Lou's birthday.

Lorita— My late MIL always referred to it as Decoration Day too. It took me a minute to catch on to whatever it was she was discussing. She kept me on my toes. Her vocabulary included a lot of nouns I would consider old-fashioned or even arcane— stool for toilet and divan for sofa come to mind.

I hear you on making a king-sized bed. Ideally it is a 2-person job and done without the "aid" of a cat. My old one, cat— not husband, used to run under the sheets and chase around. Sometimes he'd even bite the fitted from underneath. He was an otherwise dignified and sedate feline.

Eaglemom— Maybe it makes sense to talk to an independent insurance broker to compare coverage.

My mom leaves the TV on "for company". Makes me crazy, lol.

Iris— Your trip pictures are great. That candy, though. I do like me some Cow Tails. I am sorry for the state of your station's bathrooms. I was at Philadelphia's Wm Gray/30th Street Station yesterday and the restrooms were fine. There was a time when they were not so great. The older version is where they filmed the opening murder scene in Witness.

The DME company swapped out mom's POC the day before yesterday. She seemed so much better. Her mood was better; she was clearer and the mess in the kitchen had been tidied. The RT who came to the house said it was putting out some O2, but not as much it is supposed to. He said that could be what happened here and would explain why we needed to up the flow to 3 and then 4L.

Gothic G— My DH refers to my internet friends as "Buzz's imaginary friends". Years ago when DS was still a minor, I got stuck taking him on a steam train excursion through Horseshow Curve. Our car attendant was another kid his age who was a volunteer with the host railroad. The kid was really friendly and had a lot in common with DS so I made an attempt to get DS to practice his social skills. DS would not cooperate. LOL, a few days later he admitted he'd been a jerk and that he'd been railfan buddies with said boy for over 2 years. SMH.

    ________________________________________________________________________________________

My friend and I had a blast the last 2 days. I met her at noon on Wednesday, we grabbed a bus to Society Hill and attempted to tour the newly opened Pennsylvania Hospital Museum. Their computers were down but the girl at the desk did allow us to tour the Physick Garden (in the rain) which was just lovely. Beth— you would have loved this. It's amazing how many things grown there are still used in medicine— senna, foxglove, and others.

While we were there, the woman in charge caught up with us, apologized and gave us wrist bands to allow us into the museum. I'd been joking that given the number of appointments and procedures at their fine establishments to which I ferry mom, I deserve to be comped. It was very interesting. Friend is a clinical psychologist and especially enjoyed the exhibit on behavioral health and dementia— this was one of the first places to treat patients as ill versus possessed by demons.

From there we walked through the neighborhood looking at the restored colonial and federalist homes and stopped by the salon where I get my hair cut to get our wrist band cut off. We had happy hour at a veggie centric wine bar and then dinner outside at the French bistro overlooking another park. Yesterday we got 11am tickets at the Barnes Foundation which was even better than I recalled. Since my last visit, they've added a feature that allows you to point your phone's camera at a piece and get details and context on it. The Barnes is quirky in that it is a single individual's collection and hung exactly as it had been in his home which means no signs tagging pieces which are displayed in what seems like a random manner. Friend isn't an art junkie but loved the place. Judith— this is right up your alley.

We Ubered to the train station and were able to get her on an earlier train as hers was going to be late— she even got a $28 refund.

DH and friend were referring to this as some respite time for me. Haha. Mom's endo's office called me Wednesday to set up an appointment for follow-up and Thursday cardiologist's office reached out to ask me to schedule her a MN amyloid scan because of some issues seen in her bloodwork. She had an NM amyloid SPECT scan last July; I'm not sure if this is the same scan being repeated or if it's something different. The NP said the testing ruled out one kind of amyloidosis but not the other kind. Dr. Google tells me a positive on this could be a rabbit hole for more testing. And yay! it's at least an hour away by car and requires a couple hours for uptake of the contrast used. I guess she's buying me lunch again.

Just a thought. I have never received any notifications as I never set them up and don't need to. I don't even know how to set up notifications.

I just go from the homepage to "View Discussions for Caregivers," then "Caring for a spouse or partner." This brings up the list of more recent threads that have been made on the spouse/partner site. I then look for "Just Need to Talk to my Friends." This is simple, and if I go in every morning and every evening there are always new posts to our thread.

last night at Red Lobster was great, today not so great.

last night I couldn’t sleep because of all the hacking I was doing and having cold spells. Blood pressure was 162/80 with a120 heart rate. Oxygen was 85, but it’s 90 right now. Will retake my blood pressure later, this is how I felt with pneumonia.

Ron, sounds like you may need to go to urgent care and get checked out. I know you don't want to go out in the rain (neither do I) but it may be necessary.

Sounds like you all are having a good time. I went to the monthly "jam session" at the senior center yesterday. Members bring their instruments and play country and gospel music for three hours. Tables and chairs are set up like a night club, there are non-alcoholic refreshments, and you can get up and dance if you want (I did). Cover charge is a dollar and coffee is a quarter, that took me back a way. Not a bad way to spend a rainy afternoon.

Iris, the pictures are great. Thanks for taking us on your trips. The dog dancing video is amazing in that she could train him to do that although dogs are really smart. Think how long the training must have taken. I also think about how she will miss him. The bird house/feeder is beautiful. Our birds would love it. Just now I found two halves of a tiny white egg on the floor under the nest but haven't seen or heard anything.

I have slept on the mattress two nights without the morning back aches I was having so I like it..

Ron, nothing like living in the country where we can see wild animals. They are curious so the deer wanted to see inside. A few years ago we saw a mother skunk with three babies trailing behind her-: so cute. There is some fairly big animal in our yard who leaves his calling card. Never have seen him Hope you are better this afternoon.

HB, stool and divan here. A toilet, to me is the outside facility which we had until I was 11 or 12. We had inside water but no inside bathroom. Those night time trips in the winter were rough. I would like to have a full sized bed but guess the mattress topper will suffice for now.

Not on Facebook so couldn't see what you posted, Judith. I don't get notifications either, Beth. I check two ur three times daily, too, and I do what you do.

Sounds like you're really getting in a lot of dancing, Carl. That is good exercise I hear.

Mike called this morning so was able to visit with him about Stormy's seizure. He said a seizure results, or can, from loud noises such as storms - whatever messes up their nervous system. Guess being able to soothe or calm him was the right thing to do to prevent the seizure from becoming fullblown.. Partly cloudy and muggy here today. Guess summer is a- comin'.

Lorita, at the LA County Fair, there was a table with information about pests, and I picked up this info about ants for you.

    1000007356.jpg 1000007358.jpg

HB, I like old- fashioned words like divan. The term Memorial Day only became official in 1971. Many people don't know about our history. Many people don't know that our rights derive from our Creator.

The Hospital Museum sounds like a place I would like to visit, if I ever got back to the East Coast. What is a "veggie" centric wine bar?

I describe the Front Porch as my "internet friends". You all are definitely not imaginary to me!

Ron, you probably don't feel up to traveling to urgent care so often. Is there a visiting nurse available to you, or telehealth, when you have these episodes?

Cark, your jam session sounds great! What a nice way to spend an afternoon with compatible people!

Judith, I didn't click on your animal reel. If it is an animal in distress, I don't want to see it.

Re: the treadmill, I can't kick my legs that high even when standing.

Iris— Great information on ants. Thanks for sharing.

I have no objection to divan as a noun, but it is a specific kind of upholstered piece (long, low and similar to a chaise or fainting sofa) rather than MIL's ordinary sofa/couch.

The veggie centric wine bar isn't quite a full-on vegetarian or vegan establishment but offers a lot of vegetable-based options.

Iris…I would not post an animal in distress…go ahead and open it.

A divan is a specific piece of furniture. Couch comes from a French word and sofa I think from a Turkish word. People in the south here used the word davenpor…The term originates from the A.H. Davenport Company, a prestigious furniture manufacturer based in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Davenport! That's the word I was trying to remember! Many of my elders referred to a sofa as a davenport when I was a child.

Judith, I watched the video of the chick's hatching. Obviously this guy has a set-up to incubate the eggs. But there are people who want to eat bird embryos. I saw it on the news before I stopped watching the news. I am very sensitive to stories like that. I avoid the news.

Iris - your trip to the fair looked like it was a lot of fun, well, except for the Metro. So much candy!! And the bird feeder looks like candy too! So pretty.

And you get to go to the La Brea Tar Pits! So jealous. 🙂 When you go, see if that exhibit is still there - the one with cylinder filled with tar. If so, push the plunger into the tar and see if you can pull it up. It's much harder than it looks. When I was a kid, that museum didn't exist. It was a much more wild experience, not the sanitized version we have now. I'll be curious how it is once they've renovated it.

Goodlife - My notifications on this thread are —- spotty. Sometimes I get a notification, sometimes I don't. It's very weird.

HB - my parents used to have the TV on for company too. And my dad refused to wear his hearing aids so it was very, very loud.

The hospital museum sounds really interesting. it sounds like you guys had a great time.

Ron - I hope you're starting to feel better.

Carl - the jam session sounds really fun!

Judith and Beth - I'm not on Facebook so I can't see the posts. What's treadmill video about?

My grandmother used the words "couch" and "davenport" interchangeably. I haven't heard the word "davenport" in decades. And for your trivia for the day - there is a Davenport, CA. It's close to Santa Cruz.

The pollen here is starting to calm down - I didn't even have to use the air purifier today. That was nice. Otherwise, I spent my day adulting. Can't someone do all of that for me? Gym was good, speaking of treadmills.

I'm winding down now. Listening to Mr. Strange, Metropolis. Did any of you see the silent film Metropolis? It's almost 100 years old at this point, but when you look at it, some of the sets could be from today. It was kind of a science fiction, dystopia robot movie. Here's the link for the music video for the Mr. Strange song. Just turn the volume down … they use a lot of footage from the movie, and they do it well. I guess Metropolis entered the public domain a few years ago so Mr. Strange was able to use the footage without any legal issues.

Just put an angel food cake in the oven for Darwin and his wife. I took over part of one a while back and they liked it so thought I would do this. May bake one for me, too. Easiest cake ever with the mix.

I need to open the.north barn doors pretty soon. The girls will be back home before long and will want to be in the barn. Gary screwed the shutters closed so he could fix them but had to have hip replacement before be got it done. They're on the east side so don't provide much ventilation anyway. Also need to plant the rose moss seeds in the bathtub and.cut some tall poke plants along the fences.

Cake is done so will be back later. Thunder tonight!!!

    Good morning all.

I do believe that summer is upon us. The heat and humidity have arrived. I don't know if anyone remembers from years past, but our neighbors behind us have a pool. Those kiddo's and parents are in that pool constantly. I enjoy letting Madison out and hearing the kids play. I mean literally all day they are either in the pool or the backyard playing. By late at night I can hear the adults in the pool. I will say they do throw some great parties, or at least they sound that way!

I read an interesting article yesterday by a doctor whom said that they have data that proves dancing, any kind of dancing, is probably the best way to prevent ALZ. While dancing all of the nerve centers in the brain are engaged, coordination is involved / balance as is deeper breathing. I'd never read that before. Now he did say if you have the genes, etc you can have noticeable progression. But it is not as rapid.

Now I've got an angle food cake in my mind. That with fresh strawberries. I'm off to the kitchen to bake a cake!

    Let's be safe everyone.

    Hi, NannyG!

Eagle, I also heard that about dancing—it's both physical and cognitive, because you have to remember all the steps and coordinate your entire body.

Judith, those eggs did look smaller than usual.

Eagle your comment about strawberries and angel food cake reminded me about the dinner on the ground our Church always had on the last Sunday pf revivals. Someone always brought angel food cake and strawberries.

I was going to bake some of that cookie dough, you break apart and bake. It was frozen so will have to thaw. I have never baked them before. I have ordered frozen cookie dough from QVC three times but by the time they get here the dry ice is gone and they are thawed so no good. Will need to order when it's really cold.

Judith, why is he breeding quail for eggs? They are so small you would have to eat a dozen. Inbreeding in quails? Are their eggs.better than hen eggs? I near quail quite often.

Cake is done and upside down cooling. I hope I baked it long enough. Watching a bit of Roland Garros.

He probably sells the eggs…they pickle up nicely.

Angel food cake is alwas trumped by a brownie with ice cream…lol

BTW…chocolate chip cookies (Toll House recipe always) are very easy to make and you can drop spoonfulls of dough on a cookie sheet and freeze.

I think I have a brownie mix and I keep vanilla ice cream for the GPs, Stormy now. I sort of tore one side of the cake with the knife getting it out of the pan. So will keep it and make another for them.

I think the.brand of those frozen cookies is Toll House. They are thawing now. I need to make more of those tea cakes - really were good. I can freeze all of these things so I won't eat too much. Trying to get rid of five pounds.
