Good morning.
It's 69 and rainy today, the kind of gray day that is so depressing in March and so welcome in July. We expect dangerous heat again tomorrow through Tuesday (high 90s and totally humid).
I'm off to the senior center. A group called Storytellers of the Ozarks is presenting some local folklore. The natives were still killing witches with silver bullets a hundred years ago, so there are some pretty interesting stories to be told.

Morning. Ron, how are you this morning? Do you think you're going to enjoy your new living arrangement after you feel better? I hope so - at least there are people around all the time.
It's nice this morning, cool, breezy and even cloudy..Like the calm before the storm. Going to.back.over 100 with very high heat indices beginning tomorrow.
I went out to check the water tank and there's another leak in the pipe so will fix that later. Billy was out there waiting for me to feed him.. Only takes one time doing something for them to learn and some people think they're just dumb old cows.
HB,.hope you like your new mattress topper. Mine has eliminated my morning backaches almost completely. Wonder how you fluff them.up after you sleep on them. They do reinflate some but not completely. Maybe shaking them to get air back in would work.
Eagle, what is the reason for the vitrectomy? I worked for an eye specialist many years ago.but never heard of that procedure. I agree you need to talk to the anesthesiologist.
Iris, hope you rested well last night and are ready for another day. Enjoy your day!

HB…the discussion was at the beauty salon!
Fine Irish mist this morning.
Quiet day today…hopefully all by myself. Planing on working in the studio some.
What is auto correct??? Rather how does it get on your electronic devices???

Judith, I think it comes built in.. It changes words, when I type in Caladiums it prints Galatians! The beauty shop is where I learned about 'Awesome', one of the best cleaners around.
Sandy, I just stumbled onto something you may already know. You and I like Blair clothing and hated it when they went out of business.I learned this morning that Amazon has some of their clothes, also some at WM. I was looking for patio dresses. Hope.you are well this morning.

Kind of a quiet day here on the porch. Everyone must be out and about.
Today was nice in my neck of the woods - sunny, few clouds, about 80 degrees - and good air quality (26). Just perfect.
We got king salmon on sale (yay!) so had that today with broccoli. Pretty tasty.
Gym was good.
No complaints for the day.
I almost forgot - I read an article today (the good, the bad, and the ugly) about a streaming TV series about Burning Man. I haven't been recently - I wouldn't have dreamed of going while Peggy had Alzheimer's, so I don't know if the recent stuff is true (although I bet it is). I can attest to the "gentrification" of Burning Man.
One time when I went (20 years ago or so), I was looking to get away from work, the stress, etc., and just relax for a week. Ha, the joke was on me. I woke up one morning and thought I heard this tech reporter I knew (and disliked), and sure enough, there he was - along with several board members from the non-profit where I was working at the time. 😐️ So yeah, tech had invaded Burning Man fairly early. Bummer, that.
By the way, it's very easy to avoid the drugs and alcohol - and the Orgy Dome.
I keep thinking I have one more Burn left in me, but who knows, maybe I don't.

HB - I had to laugh at your exhaustion after your day with the babies. Babies are hard work and it is the joy, smiles, and laughter that make it all worth it. We have two grand babies 2 and 4 years old and they have been the most unexpected delight but boy am I still surprised at how wiped out a few hours with them will leave me.

Morning, going to be a scorcher today and all this next week. I cut and peeled a cantaloupe yesterday, tasted it and it was sweet. This morning on tv they were cautioning people to scrub vegetables and melons before you cut them so guess I should give the melon pieces to Rusty and his friend. I saw a big turtle in the yard yesterday so maybe I can find him and give some to.him. I would have given him some cat food yesterday but was in a hurry.
Yo all be very careful in the heat. Darwiǹ told me this Morning he thought he would now his yard today. Hope I talked him out of it. This is good hay baling weather for heat but not too good humidity wise. I heard tractors yesterday so Mike and Ray are cutting. Yesterday morning the weather was so nice - later I went out and the humidity was awful. The south wind had brought it back. Summertime in Oklahoma can be not so nice. Be careful out there. Back later.

Good morning. Today is the 2nd of 3 perfect days weather-wise. I'll take it. Pity my chores for the day have me indoors for the most part.
Iris— I'm so glad you're enjoying the trip. I'm looking forward to your next photo dump.
Carl— A cool, rainy day can be a real pleasure unless you're on a short beach-centric vacation.
I had no idea there were "witches" in the Ozarks. I know I have an ancestor in Salem who had been magistrate in the decade before the trials. Glad to have dodged that bullet.
Judith— So your salon exists in both the modern hair and the historical intellectual sense? That's pretty cool. We mostly take about new restaurants and vacation venues at mine.
Auto correct is default in many mobile devices. It adds hilarity to my iPhone and iPad. It's in General Settings>Keyboard. You can also turn on/off predictive text and smart punctuation there. In Microsoft Office, it's under the File tab.
Gothic G— So glad you found your King Salmon and on sale yet. Is this a seasonal thing? Do you grill it?
Lorita— The topper was mostly a success, I think. I did feel a little less achy when I woke up but I slept until almost 8:30 which I haven't done in decades. The sleep inertia is just now passing 2 hours later. DH loved it. He helped put it on the bed and told me at dinner he couldn't wait to turn in.
___________________________________________________________
Hematology needs to reschedule my appointment for Wednesday; I'll have to deal with that on Monday. I need to schedule mom's derm; I'm tempted to postpone until she mentions it. She's had no concerns for 2 years now beyond dry skin. When her dermatologist changed mom's routine appointments from 2x a year to once and mom protested mightily.
I need to clean out the unused shower. I'd been storing painting supplies from when I painted the primary suite. All the stuff needs to find a home in the basement. I'll need to make some space first. Yuck. DH needs to remove the books from the smaller bookcase in my office ahead of the plumber coming as well. They're supposed to be mine but he's like some invasive species with his books so I insisted he do it.
I hope all have a pleasant and safe weekend.

They were making cookies on one of the morning cooking shows this morning. Made me think about your Tea Cakes recipe, Sweeteater.I hadn't seen it late!y so was afraid I had lost it but found it leaning against something on the counter. So glad it was there. They are almost, if not entirely, like grandma made, especially the second day. I want to make more but just too.hot now to turn on the oven. I have a container Datei Had brought something over in so will fill it and return. You know you never return an empty container. I took some Tea Cakes to them when I first made them and they loved them.

Do you all ever watch Rawhide -an old Western about cattle drives?. I'm doing laundry and watching it. The cattle were crossing a river which reminded me that in the town where I worked there's a huge mural painted on the side of a building on main street depicting a herd of cattle crossing a river! This is cattle country!

I would like the tea cake recipe please……

I vaguely remember Rawhide. I started watching because I thought it was about a nudist colony, but it was a pretty good western.
0 -
Thanks for the laugh, Carl. Rawhide wss a goid western.
Judith, I will post the recipe tomorrow. Worn out now.
I couldn't get Darwin on the phone. He got out and mowed.his two acre yard this morning so wss afraid he might not be well. Deon was blocking the gate while.he.fixed fence so waited for.him to move When I got to Darwin's his wife didn't know where he was so we checked the barn, then she saw him in the house. He had been outside doing something.
Checked his phone- His daughter had made it easier to make calls but I had to.figure it out Battery was low, too. The thermometer on his back porch read 102.I had left Stormy in the house so hurried back. Stopped at the mailbox and one of Mike's trucks passed me and another wss going into the mesdow Heard cows barking so.guess he is checking them. Lots of pretty bales of hay just west of Darwin's - the man who.leased his land is baling. I wish Mike would bale our meadow to get rid of the tall grass along the road. It 91 with heat index of 100. Heat index today was around 111.
Good.night, sleep tight.

Good evening. Our tour is coming to an end, we had out farewell dinner tonight. We all had such a wonderful time! I will have to tell you all about the tour later because every day and evening was jam-packed with activity, and we got in late. We are leaving tomorrow for LAX, arriving close to midnight.
Lorita, some of the cattle here are Black Angus cattle. Here is a picture from the bus.
Temperature reached 114 degrees today in the Badlands! Who knew South Dakota was so hot? 🔥
Good night.

Good morning!
Carl, thanks for the laugh.
Lorita, when I was growing up we had one television and 3 channels. My dad always wanted to watch "Maverick" - I believe it was on Sunday nights. I wanted to watch "Dennis the Menace" but Dad got to watch what he wanted to watch.
The kids and grandkids came over last night. We fed the fish and they found a freshwater mussel in the pond. We let it be. How do mussels get into man-made ponds? I'm quite sure the DNR doesn't stock them.
I made scotcharoos, tacos and saffron rice. No lettuce for the tacos!
Lorita, the guidelines for washing the melon peel really are no different than they were before. You have bacteria on the peel of any fruit or vegetable, and if you're going to cut into it, you need to wash it first; if you don't wash it first, the knife transfers bacteria from the outside of the fruit to the inside.
Have a good week, everyone.

That's right, Beth. That's why it's not a good idea to buy fruit that's already cut up.

Son is putting in for vacation time next month where we can have a nice fishing trip with family at a lakeside cabin. August will be a little hot, but with grandson starting football practice, August is the best time and there will be a cabin to cool off in.

Ron, your trip sounds nice. If you're near a lake at least you can cool off in it. Gives you something to look forward to.
Beth, the first tv we had my grandma bought. I think I was around 12. The first two shows I remember wss Looking' at Cookin' any Howdy Doody. I think we had three stations for only part of the day. Things have really changed.
Mike told me something this morning that really upset him and then upset me. He was having his morning cup of coffee at 5:30 before he went to work and was watching a local tv sfation. They were reporting that data centers, windfarms and solar panels, maybe urban sprawl, had taken land as big as Nebraska and Kansas combined. Don't remember the breakdown exactly. This has taken that much land away from farmland and range land across the US. If it continues like it may with more agriculture land being taken up, food production will diminish. Wish I could remember all he said. He was very upset.
There are three or four big data centers and solar farms within 20 miles of us, three within 15. A wind farm was proposed around Lake Eufaula but was voted out - taken to court. Money talks. I know I have mentioned one local man sold 160 acres for 20 million and others sold and/or leased their land for 99 years. That's 4500 acres taken out of production within five miles of us.
Hot today and for this next week with temps over 100, not counting heat indices.

Trying to figure out what to do with the day…lol
forgot to post this morning…another lol

It's 101 with heat index of 111 at 3 p.m.
Judith, here's the.recipe. Sorry I took so long to post it
Tea Cakes: 2 sticks oleo: 1 1/2 C. Sugar: 2 eggs: 3 C. Flour: 1 tsp. Vanilla: 3'T. Milk mixed with 1 tsp. Soda: Mix well and spoon onto greased cookie sheet. Bake at 350 for 8-10 min. Until edges are barely brown. Makes 1-2 dozen depending on size. (I just reread my recipe and it said 10-12 dozen. I must have written it wrong).
I think I pressed mine down a bit before baking. I think grandma may have rolled hers out but I really don't know for sure. Makes a stiff dough. I stored mine in an airtight container. To me they were more like what I remembered the second day. Very good. Recipe is from Sweetwater.

Thank you…will butter do?
0 -
10-12 dozen is correct. The cakes should be very small. If I remember correctly, 2 inches in diameter or less. Butter definitely works, better than oleo.
0 -
I made mine bigger. Decided I would double the recipe next time when it gets coo!er. I don't have a stand mixer and my.handheld one doesn't work too well with the dough. So glad,Sweetwater,to finally get a recipe for the tea cakes.I doubt grandma even had a written recipe. Thanks again.

It is hot here and we are under a heat warning. It is 93 and humid, heat index 101, an hour before sunset. The birds are enjoying the fresh water I gave them. There is steady birdbath traffic of doves, bluebirds, indigo buntings, and other less colorful species.
Ron, that vacation sounds good, especially if you like night fishing.
That cooking you all do sounds really good. Those tea cakes could pass for cookies. We had a "fellowship lunch" after church today. The church bought pulled pork and brisket from a BBQ place, and we all brought sides or desserts. There was sweet corn, baked beans, potato salad, deviled eggs, and much else. I brought store-bought pickled beets, which were quite a hit and nearly all consumed. The brand is Aunt Nellie's, which sounds like a joke but is pretty tasty. And a lot less trouble than cooking something.
It will be hot again tomorrow. I plan to turn in early and get outside before the sun hits its stride. Hope all of you sleep well.
1 -
If you want to.best the heat, Carl, you better get out early.
Pickled beets. We always made pickled beets. Cooked them in the pressure cooker. Then peeled them(my job and I loved It). The peelings just slid off. Mother made them so I have no idea how. I loved them. Carl, Patsy, my cousin told me Atwoods have pickled beets that taste homemade. Maybe I should try them. Our Canteen used to serve Harvard beets but I never tried them. To me they looked sweet like berry cobbler.. Glad you had a good time.
You all sleep well. See you in the morning. Maybe we can just imagine it's cool.

I love pickled beets. When I was a young bride I had no idea how to make them (still don't) so I put a can of beets (drained) into the pickle juice when we finished the pickles and let them sit for a couple of weeks. Dill pickled beets are…odd…but still good! My mother got a laugh out of that, though.
