Happy October!!! One of my two favorite months. We always took a weekend trip to Eureka Springs to see the pretty leaves. I miss that.

We had some rain overnight, not nearly enough. I only see see two puddles. It is nice and cool though.

Ron, so sorry your weekend celebration didn't turn out so well. Hope you're feeling much better by now.

My.phone is ringing now- no idea what was wrong.

Beth, that is a lot.of rain. I think we had two inches. Our September was the.hottest on record, over 100 years, by three or four degrees. It was awful. Now we will.probably have a cold winter.

Again, Happy.October!

    Happy October.

Lorita. I have issues with my phone at times, my daughter always fixes it, its always because I poked the wrong thing. A few days ago I was plugging my watch in to charge, then someone on my watch was asking me if I was OK ! Not sure what I did I must have hit a wrong button and my watch called a old friend. All this happened when I was just plugging my watch in, I guess my watch can do a lot of things that I'm not aware of. My phone and watch are connected so my daughter had to fix things, she was not sure what I had done. I guess I can blame it on, getting old Who knows 🤷‍♀️. How are your eyes feeling this morning? How is Darwin doing today?

Ron. Sorry you were sick on you birthday, I'm praying your feeling better now. But it was nice you got to see your family.

HB. Your so right I do borrow trouble. I have always been a worrier, if i don't have anything to worry about i will find something.

Iris. I love living in apartments. I have owned and lived in a few houses, but i have lived in a few apartments, that would have everything a person would want. Im glad you did not have any damage caused by the storm. Im lucky the weather in Bosie has been nice, but I also have been waring a sweater when I take the dogs out in the mornings.

Hugs to all of you. Zetta

Just fed either the three outside cats or the opossum. Not sure which whatever it is but , all the food is eaten and all the water is gone each time I go out. Checked while out and we had 2.25" of rain! My violets have revived and plants are beautuful. Even have some Anthea blooming.

    Good morning.

Welcome to October! It's an easy month, between the busyness of summer and the busyness of the winter holidays. We can relax and enjoy the comfortable weather, although we here in SoCal are expecting a week-long heat wave next week.

Lorita, yesterday I thought I heard a cat behind my building on the street side where I rarely go. I didn't find a cat, but I found evidence that someone has been leaving food beneath my bedroom window. There are so many feral cats. These aren't the same feral cats that are inside my complex.

My coughing is getting better, it's no longer productive.

Zetta, I'm a worrier, too. A friend of ours once said if I didn't have something to worry about, I would find something. Both by grandma and mother were born worriers, too. Thanks for asking about my eye. Tearing again and sort of uncomfortable.

Darwin is trying to adjust but there's nothing to do. He has been a farmer and rancher his whole life and now he has had to give it up. Today he's worried about his barn. His barn Is an equipment barn for tractors, tools, etc where ours is a livestock barn. He's worried that it may not be locked. I should check but a daughter will be there tonight so will ask her.

One thing he worries about is that one of my 15x8 hallway doors is on top of the barn. About a month ago the wind, probably a small tornado caught the bottom of the door and flipped it up on top of the barn, still attached to the roller railng. I'm leaving it to Mike and.his guys to deal with it but he asks about it almost every time we talk. He would.love to be.home on his ranch but won't leave.his wife. Such a sad situation.

I have lived in two apartments with my niece, one duplex with Charles and an apartment when I was five, all for a total of two years.Have lived here the rest of my life. Prefer the country life where I.can see deer, hear wolves and coyotes and see opossums - that's just me.

    Happy October!

Lorita— Sometimes mom's phone acts up, too. When she lets it power off because of a dead battery, it sometimes goes back to factory pre-sets which mean I have go back in and increase the font size and brightness as well as check the sync/volume on her hearing aids. Other times she lowers the volume accidently because of how she picks it up, but the worst is when she randomly turns on the white noise (ocean waves). I have no idea how she does this as it requires several steps to set up.

I hope your eye is better.

Ron— I am so sorry you didn't get to enjoy the entire time at the lake. That's really unfortunate. I do hope you're feeling better soon.

Beth— Yikes on the biblical amount of rain.

Eaglemom— I hope the worst of the eye soreness passes for you soon. In terms of OTC drops, I'm liking the new Refresh brand— the Mega 3 version with flaxseed oil. It seems to provide longer relief than other kinds.

Iris— I hope you're done with the pesky cough soon.

Lady Z— Is it an Apple Watch? If so, they have an accelerometer built in to detect falls (how fast something is "falling") IME, it reacts to actual falls but also if I reach deep into my top-loader for a stray sock to put cutlery in the basket of the dishwasher.

    ___________________________________________________________________________________
I got mom to the PCP and grocery shopping, but we didn't have time for tai chi. I kind of laughed when I came home and read the doc's notes— he wrote "daughter helped provide history". LOL, maybe it should say "Bossy-pants daughter answered all my questions".

I touched base with my own PCP. She swapped out my spironolactone for nebivolol and I hate it. I'm short of breath climbing stairs (new to me) or even walking on flat ground. Huffing and puffing with a HR of 73 (resting HR of 54) makes no sense at all. Plus, it gives me a headache and nausea. She wants me to try a half dose for a week.

I'm meeting friends for dinner. I better go find something to wear. Be safe out there.

So I just did a thing. In turning the calendar over I happened to glance at Dec. and silently to myself when "nope." It looked like the entire month is nothing but appointments. Now I'm sure that's not true, but two appointments or more a week in Dec is too much. It's physician offices getting people in for end of the year items. I made a decision we're not doing that, unless necessary. Our teeth can be cleaned in Jan just as well as Dec. As for the deductible, I'll have to pay it in 2027 anyway, why not Jan.? The dermatologist can check us in Nov., etc. Of course I kept the pulmonary physician in place and our PCP check up's. It felt rather freeing!

I guess in looking at it I felt overwhelmed. I know that DH doesn't do well having multiple appointments in a week. So I solved a problem before it was a problem! I want to do several little things with DH while we can and I'll make that happen also.

Our rain gauge is on 4.00 inches and its still raining. Not one bit of runoff, the grounds so dry its just soaking it up.

Happy October! 🎃 It's not sweater weather yet, except first thing in the morning, but it's better than August.

HB, I take Nebivolol. It is a beta blocker and makes you feel fatigued when you first take it, but you get used to it and it's better. My mother's PCP started her on a beta blocker when she was in her late 80s. When Mom complained of fatigue, PCP told her she'd just have to get used to it. Mom thought she meant get used to having no energy, so she stopped the medicine and stopped seeing the doctor. That landed her in ICU for three weeks and hence to a NH for the rest of her life. Not wanting to follow that path, I take my meds. Hope you can find a dose that gives you good result.

I'm having leftover spaghetti and meatballs today. Sean & Tammy invited me and a neighbor couple for dinner last night and sent me home with homemade bread, homemade apple pastry, and leftover homemade meatballs w/ homemade marinara sauce, plus leftover spaghetti. It is good to have friends who like to cook and like to entertain.

I'm off to see if Braum's has Pumpkin ice cream yet. They advertised it on their paper bags a couple of weeks ago but the clerk said they didn't expect to have any until 9/27. TTYL

So much is going on with everyone, I can't keep up!

I'm still resting and recuperating. I finally decided that my cough is related to persistent coughing after Covid. Did I already post this? I don't remember. But my cough is getting better, because it is no longer productive. But my voice is still a bit hoarse. I coughed for three months the other two times I had Covid, so I really shouldn't be surprised by this coughing.

I have a neurologist appointment tomorrow, to talk about my memory. It's better than it used to be, but still bad.

I'm going to turn in now.

Good morning. No sweaters here. Summer-like here today with rain this evening.

Eaglemom— Kudos to you for proactively managing your schedules to keep things harmonious when you can. Fortunately, mom doesn't bristle at multiple appointments given the many docs she sees routinely. I have a rare trifecta on the 19th— killing 3 birds with a single stone.

Iris— I'm sorry the cough persists. Last year there was a virus in my area that came with a residual cough that seemed to last the season— folks were calling it the 100-Day Cough. It was no picnic.

Carl— I'm sorry about the consequences of your mom's non-compliance. My mom did similarly in the months just before dad died. Her BP med needed to be renewed and when she called the office to ask, the phone system put her on hold for 45 minutes. She hung up in a fit of pique. She did not ask me to put a renewal request in online or ask the pharmacy to call— she just stopped taking BP meds. Two months after dad died, she ended up in the hospital with HBP and a COPD exacerbation. She wasn't honest about her compliance so the upped the BP meds which caused lack of blood flow to her left optic nerve which cost her the vision in that eye and her driving priviledges.

I've been on a bunch of different BP meds over the years. For the last 3 tears, I've been taking 2 different meds. Some didn't work well. Some had side effects. This one hasn't been great. I've been on it for almost 3 weeks and the fatigue (low HR) and headache are worse than when I first started it. My BP was 101/53 this morning so I question even needing a second medication. Since the start of the year, I've lost over 20lb, improved my diet and been able to return to a regular exercise schedule after my TKR. FWIW, I never had BP issues until my parents moved back to the area— coincidence? I used to run a little on the lower side. Whine, whine, whine.

    _____________________________________________________________________

I have been summoned for jury duty. We do 1 day/1 trial which is doable. But the date is for the week my aunt was intending to visit. Ugh.

DS has his first clinical assignment and is doing the paperwork for the hospital as we speak. He lucked out, the hospital is only 7 miles away.

    Good afternoon Porch Friends.

Lorita. How are your outside kitty's doing? Hopefully you dont spoil them and bring them inside. I know I would. They need to be hungry so they will go after the mice. How far is Darwin away from his home? Is he too far that he can't go visit once in awhile?

Carl. Too bad your mom misunderstood the doctor, I feel the doctor should have made sure she understood. I hope you found out that Braums has the pumpkin ice cream. I always wait for Starbucks to come out with their pumpkin spice flavorings. That a fall favorite it started in August.

HB. My watch is a Garmin, and it detects a lot of things, if i fall what my heart rate is my sleeping times. There are lots of things it does that I'm not aware of. I just need to be careful on what buttons I push on. Sorry to hear that you get short of breath at times when walking. My issues are balancing when I walk. I hope you enjoyed having dinner with your friends last night. We are having Panda Express, bring us dinner tonight.

GG. It does not surprise me that you been to Jenner a few times, it's not that far from San Francisco. You probably went through Bodega Bay on your way to Jenner. Do you remember the movie that Alford Hitchcock, did caĺl The Birds that was filmed in Bodega Bay, Hitchcock productions used 4 of my grandparents row boats during the film. They had 3 in the water with cameras and the one that was seen was the one carrying the lady to the island. Tippi Hedren, was the actress.

It's funny your asked about Cottage Grove, Oregon. I Lived there for about 30 years, before I moved to Bend Oregon. My oldest son graduated from Cottage Grove High and my daughter was born at The Cottage Grove hospital, 40 years ago. I did not know about The General being filmed there. I rember The Animal House being filmed there in 1978, and Emperor of The North filmed there in 1973. Cottage Grove, has a lot of old buildings and a few covered bridges a few mining community's, that drew a lot of visitors. You could walk all over the town of Cottage Grove. I do miss Cottage Grove. But my last marriage brought me to Bend, Oregon its about 150 miles away. This brought back lots of memories 😄

    Take care all Hugs Zetta

I bought a carton of pumpkin iced cream. It is good if you like pumpkin pie. Not my favorite ice cream, but a good way to kick off the season.

I remember The Birds. Tippi Hedron was the woman attacked in the phone booth IIRC. Like all Hitchcock movies, it was pretty good. We used to watch his TV show every week. One was about a woman who clubbed her husband to death with a piece of frozen meat, thawed it, cooked it, and served it to the investigating police officers. The evidence was right under their noses!

GG, you can probably copy and paste your post to this thread, but we've already gone back to #222 and read it (or at least I have).

    Have a great weekend!

GG, I went back and read your post on #222 also. Very interesting! Sounds like a nice trip and a great time at the winery and Death Guild.

I've been busy (just how I like it, as long as it's not endless health appts like Eagle alluded to!) Yesterday we went to lunch with great friends in celebration of our 50th wedding anniversary which is actually today (10/2). We enjoyed a Mexican lunch and then had them over to our house. So good to be with good friends! This friend is very creative. She made us a chocolate wine bottle filled with candy. Photo below. Yummy! Beautiful too.

Gym day today. Saw some friends there. Disappointingly, many of the people I'd talk with regularly there don't seem to come anymore…at least not when I'm there. I've been going since February and exercised at home prior to that. After working out, I did the sauna. I'm liking that now too. After lunch, DH and I mowed. Seems with all the rain we are mowing every other or every 3rd day. Grass is very green and looks great. But I could do with mowing once a week instead. Not complaining, soon enough the grass will go dormant/brown and then the winter weather…We did our grocery shopping today and I made a loaf of banana bread for tomorrow.

Speaking of tomorrow, I'll be attending an ice cream social (working it for our Historical Society) and then a grandson's soccer game and then having the kids/grandkids over for dinner. Menu is pulled pork sandwiches, French fries, banana bread and almond bars.

Next week will be busy too. Historical Society board meeting Monday night, helping a friend in her garden Tuesday and a funeral to attend Thursday. I'll squeeze in working in my yard/garden and going to the gym also.

I just finished a good book: Theo of Golden. You can read about it here: https://www.amazon.com/Theo-Golden-Novel-Allen-Levi/dp/1668236516/ref%3Dsr_1_1?crid=2PPGN73QWWQR1&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.Y4Hc6AfkuV-kMaVZNuAwS-_JWxrIHte1iQ-kEo0EUgo__nndZrTSvbLz2MCiwvML-mDV7s8mlR7ETTuuC0CFfGxJhKsk4nZv_BJ21Lc4pMCVtvNnylb7TWeydN1_NRaCQe07s4MucEzAJxaKaVwegPT7Ju9LLpHaDyjkb6GZ8I7GDYm_avhlr5R9fpTASvYTyeytEOYmKWeHw-_Ildz7lwr2ta_KTN7ifiE6RDx9ffU.pl9TgdfW8yRGWPTlS-nicj1rr_3ZUr1wepsYnWirak8&dib_tag=se&keywords=theo+of+golden&qid=1790990917&sprefix=theo+of+goldem%2Caps%2C156&sr=8-1 A friend said it was one of the best books she'd ever read. Prodedure was YAG Laser. Secondary cataracts are the most common complication after cataract surgery, and YAG laser capsulotomy is a fast, safe and effective treatment. It uses a special, precisely tuned laser to slice through clouded tissue that affects your vision after cataract surgery. That clears the way for light traveling through your eye, restoring your vision.

Hsppy 50th anniversary, Beth. After I went to bed I remembered someone had an anniversary yesterday. Sorry I didn't get up and wish you a happy one. That chocolate wine bottle is great🇧🇦

Our grass Is greening up, too. I want to let some.of the.girls in north of the.house to eat the grass. Hate to mow it when they need it. Some people are already feeding hay and some ponds are very low.

I have a s!ight headache. Went back to sleep this morning and Darwin awakened me when he called at 9. Seems like all there is for them to do is eat and sleep. He is not happy but wife seems to be.

I'm.sure there are activities Judith. They are still settling in and going back to their apartment after eating. Maybe it will change when they get more acquainted. They're used to being alone most of the time so it's okay for now. I feel much more alone now that they're gone. Not many people out in this area so I'm trying to adjust, too. Lightly raining and dark here. Maybe a nap is in order.

Hope your eyes are okay and hope PT helps. My eye isn't tearing as much but still have that headache. Maybe sinusitis..

Eagle, what kind of drops did you put in your eyes? Have you tried Blink? Just saw an ad for Tryptyr, a new.one

Lorita - Don't feel bad about being a worrier — I come from a long line of worriers myself. My sister Peggy was one of the worst. She had apps on her phone letting her know about earthquakes and fires - anywhere in the world. And she'd worry about them.

Carl - I'm going over to your friends' house (Sean and Tammy)!

Zetta - That is so cool that you lived in Cottage Grove. Why did you ever move? Seriously - Cottage Grove is among the cutest towns I've ever seen.

HB - when are we too told for jury duty?

Beth - I love your wedding photos!! (I always went for the long-haired boys too). 🙂 Happy 50th!!!! I hope you both have many more. I can't quite tell what the flowers are, but I like how they're arranged, they aren't a straight up bouquet.

I love the chocolate wine bottle too! Yum!

I'm busy doing my Saturday chores - I have them almost done now.

We're debating about whether to go into Seattle today. A friend of ours is having a reception celebrating the 25th anniversary of his giant squid sculpture that hangs in the Pike Place Market. Here's Pat's site and a photo of the squid!

Good afternoon— Sunny here with rain coming tomorrow. I've been trying to walk in the park and the trees are starting to change colors.

Lorita— It must seem very different with Darwin away.

Judith— I hope the PT is helpful for your vertigo. That's not an easy issue to live with.

Iris— I've added a blanket at night here, too. I even swapped my linen sheets out for cotton sateen. LOL, I hadn't anticipated how bulky the linen set is when folded. Yikes.

Gothic G— I recalled the wine blending from last year. I totally would have mixed the cab and the merlot in hopes of getting a Bordeaux-like blend. What was in the winning combination?

Carl— The university creamery does a pumpkin ice cream that they hype the daylights out of with an electronic countdown clock starting in early August. It's good but I prefer the pie version. My mom's favorite of their seasonal offerings is the peppermint stick ice cream. She bought 7 quarts in January. Mom likes old fashioned flavors and gets testy when she can't find it year-round. She also doesn't understand why nobody makes Grape Nuts ice cream anymore.

Beth— A happy golden anniversary to you both. What a cute couple you were. I love your dress and veil— so pretty.

I finished a book a friend lent me with very high praises—"Mad Mabel". It's a quirky book for sure but a really fun read. I don't think it's white coat hypertension; I do take readings at home and they're not ideal either. I am meticulous about sitting for 5 minutes, arm at heart height and feet flat on the ground. Grrr.

DH and I got our vaccines this afternoon and then did a late Chik-Fil-A lunch/dinner. I want them on board before DS starts his clinicals, so I have less risk of picking up something from him and making mom sick.

I think I'll go upstairs and do a light weight routine since I probably won't get to one tomorrow.

I hope all have a pleasant evening.

There are lots of us with eye problems it seems. I had blepharitis and got rid of it by using tea tree wipes. For dry eye I first had a series of light treatments and now use the Bruder mask, Optase eye spray, and Vevye drops. So far so good. My eyes feel much better and I am producing better tears.
