who'd a thunk it, so many voters and non-voting citizens wonder after every election . . . every one seems to have surprises hit them as things evolve, tis the nature of the process. If things are oddly sideways, I remember to understand there's nothing I can do about it and keep to my days as usual and before we know it, time for another election cycle.

AND . . . if a person has not voted just because they did not want to, NO complaining at the outcome.

Mint, I hope your mom continues to like AL. HB, how is your mom today?

I have a family dilemma. My young cousin, age 30, got married last month. She had a small wedding and even though I was out of town, I was not invited. I was close to her growing up. I want to call and wish her well, but I wonder if I should send a substantial wedding gift. I will probably send a small wedding gift, maybe. It seems to me that she wants to forget her family and just focus on her new husband's family. Any thoughts?

Iris, think about it a little while before you do anything. Could it have been an oversight by her? Maybe the phone call us enough.

I have two.boxes about 1x2x2 full of old mail. Inooened, from various organizations to which I don't conyribute. Not much wind today and wet so thought I might be to burn them. Got them.out to the garden and pulled an old, metal water tank over. Water hydrant and hose were nearby. Could hardly get anything to burn, lots of smoke though. Finally gave up and turned the tank upside down. Guess ?I will have to open each one and black out info. It will take hours. Can't put them.in the trash either until I do that. Guess that might be something to do on snowy days.

I hear and see Bradley haying the girls. They're talking to.him.

Jo, we have missed you on the porch. Good to see your post.

Getting ready to watch Kamala Harris speak. I really was surprised. I fear for the people of Ukraine.

About the mums that were so lovely; remember something ate most of the yellow ones so moved the huge pot to the porch swing, about 3 1/2 ft. Or.more and mums 4' feet off the porch. Noticed just now most if the bronze ones are gone and only a few yellow ones left. So far not bothering the purple. Maybe they don't taste good. I did see little paw prints in the mud out by the water tank. Probably a raccoon.

Good luck with your move, David. You will make friends and be with other veterans. Keep in touch with us.

Hi, probably a dilly question for someone my age, but, when you soak beans overnight to cook the next day, do you keep them in the refrigerator overnight?

I don't. I just leave them on the kitchen counter, pour off the water in the morning, add new water, an onion, and a ham hock and start cooking.

A stranger bought our lunch today.

DW and I picked up DS from his group home, took him to the optometrist, and then to the diner for lunch. The waitress told us we didn't have a check today, a man had paid ours as he left. I don't even know who it was.

Just when you think the country has gone completely to pot, someone does something nice. How can I be an old curmudgeon under these conditions?

Thanks, Carl, that's what I WIll do. No room in the refrigerator and I'm. Butter bean hungry. What a nice person to pay for your lunches. Just when you think ... Someone does something nice for you and restores your faith in humanity.

    Good morning Porchies.

It's been unseasonably warm here. We hit 81F yesterday — a record— when the average is 59F. It's been almost 6 weeks since we've had any rain to speak of. Maybe Sunday evening. I hope so.

Yesterday was a driving day. I am so disappointed the mechanic hasn't gotten to DS's car. I don't think he realizes DS really needs it. And self-advocacy is not a skill at which many on spectrum excel. Maybe Monday or Tuesday at the latest. 25 minutes south to drop DS off at his Chemistry class then 15 minutes north to order mom a freezer and drive her 40 minutes north for her post-op visit (both she and doc are happy with the results) then 40 south to drop mom off, 15 more south to collect DS and 30 minutes north to return home by way of the hoagie shop because I'm not cooking. Next Monday will be similar; DS to Chemistry— mom to Philadelphia for eye injections— back to get DS— drop mom off and then home. Mom's doing really well. She's pretty much back to a baseline; she'll be discharged from PT today and nursing next week when the RN returns from vacation.

Enough whining— I'm meeting friends at my favorite Szechuan place so woot! I need to wrap my friend's birthday gift. Talbots failed me, but I got lucky at Lands End— a shaker knit sweater and coordinating shirt in a pretty pale lilac-pink. I picked up final clearance shirts for DH and myself as well as a linen shirtdress for $30.

Mint— I'm sorry the honeymoon is over, but it sounds like AL is the best fit at this point. Your mom will probably settle in with the next month or so. It must be a relief for you not to worry.

David— I think you're going to enjoy the clubbiness and activities of the Vet's Home if it's anything like the one I toured. It was like a Frat House for seniors.

Lorita— I soak countertop as well. The deer got my mums, too. Purple, rust and white. I'm about ready to give away most of my perennials at this point.

Iris— It might not have been an oversight but a matter of trimming a guest list at cousins because of sheer economics or a desire from something "smaller". Of my closest cousins, I attended only two weddings; one I was close enough to be in her wedding and the other the daughter of a favorite cousin because I drove my mom 6 hours to attend. On my dad's side of the family, all local, there are a number of events to which I wasn't invited I suspect because his brother didn't want my sketchy sister or my other black-sheep cousin— easier to draw the line at all cousins than not include some. Send a card or a gift if you want. Or not.

    HB

Morning, I have the butter beans cooking in the slow cooker. Last night I covered them by about 3-4" of water and this morning there was very little water left. I think the beans are twice or three times bigger than dry. Forgot the onion but will add it. No ham hock here, Carl, because I'm a vegetarian. Now, I may need to make cornbread but not good with a diet.

Pretty morning, cool and sunny. More rain predicted tomorrow evening.

HB that is a lot of driving.

My mom’s narcissism will never end i guess but hopefully together we will learn to not respond to the manipulation and controlling. Today I was grocery shopping and got a call. It sounded like a young little girl. I felt sorry for her. She said your mom needed cleaned up and I told her we would do it as soon as we finished a shower we were doing. She said your mother started hollering Call my daughter. She asked me if my mom had a phone and I said no I didn’t bring it.
There were several reasons I didn’t bring it because if I get her phone it’s gonna be different than the one she had at home. It’s gonna be a flip phone. But the other reason is One of the problems was mom was calling me so many times and she called me at 3 o’clock in the morning if she felt like it so I don’t want that to restart. That’s the reason I’m paying a lot of money every month. So I told the girl I would come up. so I went in I think it was both for me and them. She’s close to the door and when I entered I heard no noise. It was quiet. I said oh OK. She’s quiet she said yeah and she goes this tends to happen more in the morning I’ve noticed and I said well at home in the morning she would call me , two or three times saying mother is ready. She was wanting me to come and do what she wanted done right then. That’s back to manipulating and control. I said so she’s fine and I’m not gonna go back to her room. said if she does ask you if you called me, you just tell her yes and Sara said she would be in tomorrow but from now on I’m not going to say tomorrow I’m just going to say later . We will both learn. I had already planned on going tomorrow though.
butter beans and cornbread sound good

Oh the power of suggestion. Earlier I'd read about beans soaking and I had a thought - that sounds like a great dinner for tonight! So, my beans have been soaking and we'll have beans for dinner. DH will be thrilled, he'd eat them every meal if I'd make them. I will be making some cornbread, you just can't have beans without cornbread, IMO.

Iris your question about sending a gift or not, I'd do nothing for a bit. Then if you feel so moved you can send a card congratulating them. Sometimes families are so complicated that you just don't know what to do. Maybe it was an oversite you weren't invited? Whatever it was, you only have to answer to yourself and not react to not being invited.

David the move is coming soon. Will you be on the computer with us on the porch as much once you move? Of course you'll have to settle in to the new surroundings then I guess you'll have a better idea of what your days will be like.

Mint I think time will help your mom settle in. It's never easy.

HB I am convinced there has to be 3 of you! I can't keep up with you & everything you do. Good for you, but goodness you are on the go.

Its a coolish grey day here. I'm thinking I have two file drawers that have my name on them! I need to go through and shred what has to be shredded and toss other things. I know when doing deep cleaning your suppose to start with the most dreaded job and go from there. If I think about it like that, then I'm overwhelmed and do nothing. But when I say I'm doing two file cabinet drawers that's perfectly doable. It's just how my mind works.

    Let's be safe everyone.

    from Bon Appitite;

Soaking beans in the refrigerator overnight will reduce the time they have to cook drastically. And the texture of the beans will also be it their best, with fewer split-open and burst ones. But like we said, you don’t have to commit this hard. If you’re the impatient, bean-hungry type, you can cook your beans from dry without any soaking at all.

    HB…wow!

David, how exciting for you! You will meet new friends and buddies. Is this an assisted living VA home or a home for all vets? How far is it from your home now?

HB, I'm glad your mom is back to baseline, good for her!

Lorita and HB, the bride had no family guests other than her parents. The groom's family was well represented. I find it strange.

The.butter beans are good and I don't think it took as long for them to cook.. And, they haven't split, still whole and creamy. I had about a dozen of them with Italian bread...Eagle, I agree you cats and gs andvfillingvwater tank. to have corǹbread with beans, of any kind, maybe tomorrow. Just didn't have time today.

Word of warning!! Do not get behind in your paperwork. I did and it took a long time to get semi caught up. I would pick up the mail and take out things I had to attend to soon and leave the other things. Finally got things in semi order but still have to do contributions.

Was able to get in touch with the guys to repair wind damage at Darwins, left a message, again, for the electrician to restore power to the carport and check on what's going on with lights in our sunroom. Made appt for my flu shot next next Tuesday. They don't have covid vaccine yet. All this plus feeding cats and GPs and filling water tanks.

I just heard the girls bawling and checked. Bradley and Dion are feeding. Guess they got the feed truck out of the shop, third time in two weeks. Girls are happy now and I'm happy when they are.

Mint, it sounds like you're doing the right thing with your mother. HB, you are really one busy lady. Rest a bit.

Everyone, enjoy the evening. Rain returns here tomorrow.

I hadn't seen a little, Charolais calf for a while so when that herd came up I put on my boots and went out to check. Still didn't see him. He was so cute. If he was close to the road and a car came by he would run along the fence following it. Mike has three Charolais cows. All three calved last year but lost one, and now this one. Guess because they're white, wolves can see them easier. Three of our little ones came up to the corral fence to see the other cows. They are so curious. Time to find something for supper. Sleep well. They're having a Pinto horse show in Tulsa this week. I had a Pinto named Flash when I was young.

Go ahead with that cornbread! Beans and corn (or beans and rice) together have all the amino acids your body needs to make human protein to repair the muscles we use to chase calves or whatever.

My doctor thinks I should eat one protein, one carb, and two veggies each meal. Corn and beans count as the protein, the carb, and one veggie. Add some greens or tomatoes or whatever and you're there. What I did after reading Lorita's post was make some bean soup out of one can each of corn, tomatoes, red beans, and black beans, with chili powder to taste. DW thinks this mix, like much of my pantry "cooking" is "just awful" so I'll be having a bowl a day through the weekend and fixing her something else to eat.

Soaking beans makes them cook a lot faster, but I don't think doing it in the refrigerator makes any difference. I've been soaking them on the counter for 60 years and haven't gotten sick yet.

Cajun rice and beans is made by soaking half of the red beans, then cooking all together until the beans you didn't soak are done. The beans you did soak have cooked to mush, making that delicious bean gravy. Pour it onto a bed of rice and serve another veggie on the side. Or top it with a sausage (sorry, Lorita) and eat with French bread and butter.

David, best withes on your move. I hope they serve some good beans at the VA.

Carl and Lorita, my mouth is watering from this bean talk. I think I'll cook black beans on Saturday.

Lorita, I saw a picture of the Charolais cattle, they are very impressive.

Since our country is turning a page, I will also turn a page. I will put off trying to hold onto my extended family and young cousins. I've always tried to keep in touch with the younger generations, but no more. I have other things to do.
