New to Alz

J & L are new to Alz. We have one support group in 52241 and we are the only active members. Our diagnosis is "Early-Stage" and we are in the upper 80s but otherwise in good health. We have freely shared our diagnosis. We are reading all we can about proper nutrition for dementia. We are active in National Senior Games plus local competitions. We are looking for active support groups and any information that we can get.

Welcome to the club! I have an Alzheimer's diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment (MCI). I'm 64. I elected to start on Leqembi, one of the two recently FDA-approved drugs which slow the cognitive decline associated with AD. I just had my 19th infusion, with zero negative reactions. I recently ran across a paper published last year by the Norton Neuroscience Institute Memory Center in Kentucky, about their experience with the first 71 patients they treated with Leqembi. The average patient age was 72, with ages from 49-90. You might be interested in investigating this promising drug. There are risks associated with Leqembi and Kisunla (the other anti-amyloid drug approved by the FDA). Specifically, something referred to as ARIA: bleeding and swelling in the brain. Among the 71 patients they treated, 12 developed ARIA. Nine of these were asymptomatic (meaning the people didn't know they had ARIA - it was discovered via an MRI). You have to have a genetic test performed prior to starting on one of these drugs, as people with certain genes are more likely to develop ARIA (the specific gene is referred to as APOE4).
