Just need to talk to my friends (214)

One on each end. I think you have a Generac like we have. I went out a while ago and the light is on, so good. If it needs service, the light is yellow. Guess I should call and tell them 'no hurry' Got my groceries - more bird feed and cat food. I keep a couple of suet blocks out for them along with feed I add more black oil sunflower seeds to so it is it better.
JeriLynn, sounds like a lot to do to get ready for your trip but worth it so you won't worry. Good for your daughter for helping with the rescue. I cannot understand people mistreating animals. I think sometimes they may have good intentions but it gets out of hand and overwhelms them- still... That happens fairly often in Oklahoma and you know there are many cases not discovered.
Iris, nice that you love where you live. Me, too. We have dramatic temp and weather changes but they usually don't last too long. I like four seasons but with climate change the seasons are not like they used to be.
The driveway alarm just went off and a long tow truck drove up. He got turned around, got out and asked if I was so and so. Of course I wasn't and told.him I didn't know anyone around here.by that name. The name on the truck was from a town 50 miles away. Bet he had a hard time turning into our gate. This happens occasionally when home help comes to our house looking for a neighbor.GPS is not always accurate.
Be back later.

Hello Front Porchers.
Lorita . I sure hope your boys were out with you when you talked to that stranger. Might want to have your generator checked, just in case there is a issue.
Eagle. I know you have tried everything for your DHs neck pain, when my back hurts a heating pad feels real good. Is there a heating pad that wraps around the neck?
Beth. Thank you for asking, yes im well. We don't live in the mountains, we are in the foothills of Boise, Idaho. I complained about the weather being so hot in Arizona, now I miss that weather. In Arizona I would drink my morning coffee on the deck, while the dogs played in the yard. Here you have to put all kinds of winter clothes on to do that.
HB. Im not too sure about what air Stagnation means, I think it means the air is not moving, so no fresh air. JeriLynn, was talking about air quality. Im in most of the time anyway. As your preparing for you knee surgery, get plenty of rest and hopefully the meds dont make you sick. You and your mother will be in my praysrs. Does she really have a neighbor down the road that will help her if needed? Pizza is always good to fall back on, we have pizza on Fridays. Sometimes we fall back and eat the Fridays pizza, sooner.
Iris. Back in my kids days, we lived close to the Wonder Bread Bakery, in Sacrament California. Kids were always taken on field trips through the bakery. They were always given little baby loafs of Wonder Bread.
JeriLynn. Your so busy and thougtful. Not only planing for yourself but everyone you care for. Your pets, family, neighbors and friends. When traveling please take care of yourself, don't worry and get lots of rest.
Dogs need out, so got to go. Hugs Zetta

Looks like from Friday thru Monday is going to be uber cold with 6-12" of snow. If that happens our driveway will be snowed in with no tractors around except a mile south. Everyone used to have tractors. I sold ours four years ago. Guess I will have to keep the house cool ( probably will.not be a problem) because Sheena pants and pants when she gets very warm.
Eagle, do you think the ice storm will be north of you? I remember many years ago Dallas had a big one and.one of our social workers was there visiting relatives.
So glad we have a barn for the.girls but with 95+ head it will be tight, however, probably 20 of them are calves. The last time we had a big snow Darwin had tractors and he broke out the drive way. Going to bed.before long and watch tv. Almost time to put on the electric blanket. Good night, sleep tight.

Eaglemom and Zetta, CVS sells a neck heating pad. I have an infinity scarf that I wear around my neck and shoulders at night. In fact, I have it on right now. I don't like for my neck to be cold.
Lorita, does your driveway not have a gate?
Judith, is your sister back home or was she traveling away from home? How is she now?
It's beddie-bye time. I'm finally getting to bed early. Good night.

Good morning!
Accuweather thinks Dallas may be in for a major ice storm with extended power outages. In fact, ice is predicted all the way from Lubbock TX to North Carolina. This is a good time to be stocked up on oats and beans. I'm prepared to be snowed in for several days, but I dread it.

Max Velocity predicts an inch of ice in Dallas and a foot of snow in Oklahoma City, worst storm in 5 years. Yuck!

Good morning, it’s 5:55 and I just now am waking up.
since my Granddaughter didn’t get her pedicure last week I’m taking her today, also my Grandson since he’s in suspension for that fight, lunch afterwards.Ron

Not much snow predicted here; we get ice instead. The City has bridges and overpasses become dangerous.
The barn is stocked with hay for the goats and we just bought 1000 pounds of feed. Chickens have shelter and plenty of scratch feed. Dogs go in the barn or their houses as they please. They love the cold weather. We’ll refill water tanks as needed. Generator is ready and we have propane for the stove and fireplace. So, we’ve prepared as best we can. The RV also has propane if for some reason we need it. I’m not excited about any of this. We can stay home but all the kids and the older grandkids have to go to work - so I pester them with asking for a text when they are coming and going.
everyone stay warm and safe today.

Good morning.
It's 2F outside. No wind at all. I'm watching forecasts for the storm this weekend. The app on my phone is forecasting up to 22" on Saturday. Weather Underground is suggesting half that. And the local group, that tends to be more reliable, is posing a range of scenarios including the storm arriving Saturday night through Sunday to extreme cold keeps the storm to the south.
I'll need to go to the store before that for sure. DS has an early morning cardiology appointment Monday (mom is later in the day with the same doc) and is hoping the roads are clear. He's kicking himself for scheduling at 8am; he didn't want to go at the same time as mom which would have been really convenient for me as I sit in on both.Mom had her haircut yesterday. She declined the pedi but decided she needed to go to Micheal's to buy Valentine's Day decorations for her little Christmas tree.
We had some issues over the oxygen again yesterday. She wanted to leave it home since she was "just going to the salon and then home". Her O2 was 90 on RA, but she doesn't breathe well in cold weather, so I insisted she wear it in the car and into the salon and come off if she was maintaining 90 indoors.
Not long after she's shampooed the stylist's SIL (an RN) comes in to say hi. The RN saw mom come in with O2 and told the stylist mom needed to be on it so stylist comes over to get the concentrator telling me "mom needs her oxygen". I asked if she was having trouble breathing or was symptomatic in some way and she says "no, my SIL who is a nurse insisted". So, I go over, slap the pulse ox on her finger and explain to the well-meaning RN that mom is not routinely dependent on supplemental O2 and that if she's >88 on RA her pulmonologist allows me to use my judgment. Her pulmo even told me to trust my instincts around her symptoms (mood, color or SOB) rather than a pulse ox.
She was holding 91, so I took the concentrator and sat back down. The thing that really irked me about all this was mom's cooperation with some random woman who has zero information on her medical history but fights me on this all the time.
Lady Z— The lady in her neighbor drives people as a side hustle. She's not a friend. To my knowledge, mom has never met her and only knows of her service through word-of-mouth. Mom doesn't really have anyone nearby aside from my family. In a minor emergency, I can send my son to drive her and probably will have him take her shopping once or twice. If it were something medical, DH would have to handle it as he has better knowledge of medical stuff than DS. Uber is unreliable for her as she lives in a gated (not exclusive so much as to prevent folks cutting through to avoid traffic) community, and many drivers cancel once they see that gate. When she first moved in there was a universal entry code people used, but it ended up being abused. I wish they'd just issue a new code monthly. It would make my life so much easier.
Off to catch up laundry.

Good morning.
Almost everyone seems to be in the snow and ice zones. I hope you all can stay warm and safe!

Morning, I would rather have snow than ice, prefer neither except a dusting. I know I will be snowed in and I don't like that.but with a foot of snow the east-west roads will be snowed in, too.
Iris, there is a gate at the entryway but I keep it open most of the time. .It's a.long, heavy gate and.not easy to open and close even though I have a gate wheel on it. Nothing else I can do to get ready. I have cat and dog food and my food. Propane tank is full enough and generator is ok, I think. The snow will be bad.but the temp will be worse.
They will need to put out plenty of hay and cut ice twice a day. We used to keep three big.holes cut. Charles got frostbite on a fimger once cutting ice and it turned black..We have had to beat ice off big bales so we.could get the netwrap off so we could feed. Sometimes we would unroll a big bale so the calves could lay on it off the snow. What scares me.is a cow or calf falling through the ice.. It happened once and we saw the cows gathered around. We hurried down and got in the water and got the calf out. Feeding cattle goes on in all kinds of weather- they come first.
Zetta, our yard is fenced so I was on he porch and he was outside of the yard. The GPs were in the.house barking.
Generator just came on as usual for five minutes every Wednesday at this time so it must be okay. May go up to the station and fill the car with gas. It has half a tank so may just put in some additive.. Carl or Ron, do you think half a tank is ok in cold weather-I won't be driving I hope?

This post was from this morning, but didn’t post for some reason. Back home now and enjoyed my day with grandchildren.
HB, I’m sure the nurse meant well, but I do agree that they should have checked with you first. I really don’t know why but my oxygen would drop below 90 (86at times) before moving to Missouri, but it is rare for it to be below 90 now. Maybe because I don’t hardly do anything anymoreNeed to get ready to pick grandchildren up for their pedicure and lunch.

Lorita, I fill my gas tank when bad weather is predicted so I have plenty if I get stuck in traffic somewhere, like behind a multi-vehicle accident. If you don't plan to drive, half a tank should be fine. On the other hand, driving to town for an ice cream once in a while is a good way to keep the battery charged.
Ron, glad you had a good day. I had a nice visit and some tacos with a former coworker. Good times.
Speaking of autocorrect and talk/text, I got a text this morning that began: "I have the flu. I feel just adorable." She's a nice lady, but I think she meant "horrible" or some such.

Thanks, Carl. I thought I had two or three kinds of additives but guess I used them. Ordered Seafoam that should be delivered tonight or tomorrow so will put one can of that in the PU and the other in the car and put them in the carport as much as possible.
Looks like we will get from 8-12", maybe up to 16" of snow. We used to enjoy being out in the snow but no more. Guess I could make snow ice cream+haven't had that in 60 Years at least.
I looked out the front door this afternoon and saw two calves fooling with something on the ground. First thought it was a.bird but it didn't fly then thought it might be Rusty but as it got closer to the yard and went under the fence and into the yard I saw it was an opossum. The calves were having a good time with it.
If we have that much snow the guys will have a hard time feeding. I imagine they will Put out lots of hay tomorrow. I think here are four, maybe five hayrings up there so they will fill them.
Hope everyone in the path of the storm has laid in, as they say, plenty of groceries. I will Try to keep the water tank filled-put the axe by the steps where I can find it. Last time we had icy weather I fell carrying the axe and turned.my ankle. Luckily the axe fell away from me. Carl, looks like you and Ron will get the same snow as we may get.
Time for supper so will say good night. Thought this posted an hour or more ago but it didn't. Got my third WM delivery a while ago-groceries and three other things that were to be shipped but they delivered them. One girl told me they deliver until 11: pm. I bet they are really busy tomorrow. I try to be aware of weather and road conditions when I order so they won't be out in bad weather or on muddy roads. See you all tomorrow.

Lorita, like Zetta I was concerned about you talking to a lost stranger so close to your house. I know you have a long driveway.
I wish I could say enjoy the snow but I know it brings a lot of extra work.
I hope you can make the snow cream. My cousins used to talk about snow cream but I never visited the few times they had snow, so I never had snow cream.
It's time for bed. Good night.

Beth - Yeah, so many photos of auroras! We saw some faint ones last night, but there was low fog where we are, so the aurora had to fight through that., and even then, the ones we saw were through the camera only. Not naked eye visible. Still, it was nice to have a small success. And man, it was cold!
HB - I think air stagnation is when the winds are barely moving so that pollutants aren't dispersed. It does lead to unhealthy air. I looked it up once, and there's more to it than what I said, but that's the gist.
I'm glad your soup turned out. I've had that happen with fresh tomatoes - there's a richness that's often missing with them.
Iris -I'm with you - I don't like the snow, or the extreme cold. But yeah, Fairbanks is on my list (in spite of the cold!).
I really like Hawaii's weather. I could happily live there.
JeriLynn - Yay for your youngest daughter!! She's definitely got grit. I applaud her.
Zetta - the non-profit I worked for in San Francisco was right across from the Wonder Bread factory. You might know where it was - Bryant St., south of Market. It smelled so good.
I'm thinking good thoughts for all of you with snow and ice. It's really cold in the PNW too, but so far no snow or ice.
The legislative session in Washington state began a couple of weeks ago. It doesn't last long, only a couple of months. I've been getting pulled in regarding privacy issues. One of the big issues is "surveillance pricing" (aka dynamic pricing). A company uses your personal information to determine how much to charge you for something. I see it as price gouging, and thankfully a bill has been introduced to regulate the practice.

Good morning, hard to believe, but I slept late two straight days.
Snow ice cream, I still remember the rare occasions in Louisiana making some. Guess where I’m living now it want be rare occasions. Just watch out for the yellow snow!

I saw so many photos of auroras on FB. Here is one of my favorites. It's on the Oregon coast.
God is a fantastic artist!

Good morning.
Beth, that's a wonderful photo!

Morning, sunny and chilly here this.morning. Supposed to be in the 50s today-the calm before the storm. Looks like we may get sleet along with the snow. I do hate to be snowed in. We have been before and out of power for two weeks.
It was daytime when the man was here so no problem. And, my .22 is just inside the door. I think Stormy would get someone -he was out when UPS came a while back and I had to keep him away from the man.
Beth, I love that picture. Ate you getting snow yet?
Carl, I wasn't thinking about driving, just about the tank not being full and freezing but I have never worried about that before so guess it's okay. I will put the Seafoam in though.
Glad you're sleeping better, Ron. I will watch for yellow snow. It may be too cold to even go out and get the snow. You know when I was little we used to have.big snows, often. The Last big one we have had was in 2011.
I need to go to the mailbox before the mail runs so will Be back later.

Good afternoon
Ron I am guessing you are more relaxed and that us why you are having less trouble with low 02 sats. Saw that a lot at work.
take care

Put about 8 oz. of Seafoam in the car and drove about five miles and will put 16 oz. In the PU and drive it to the mailbox. Saw Darwin going to his mailbox and talked to him a couple of minutes. He seems weak to me.
It is a beautiful day so it's hard to believe what is coming.

Good afternoon all. Yikes, this snow storm that's coming is going to get several of us. The last one we had 5 yrs ago we were without power 86 hr. I so don't want to do that again. We can't have generators because the homes are all electric. During that storm we did have a propane fireplace for warmth but I've had that removed. The propane odor & DH's asthma just didn't work well together. So we're screwed (forgive me) for any heat source this time. Hopefully we'll keep power, but the way they are talking I'm not so sure. Ugh.
Monday afternoon was exciting here because DH came to me looking sheepish saying "I wonder where my earbuds are?" Of course not in the case and not where I'd last seen them. I looked everywhere when all of a sudden I saw something out of the corner of my eye beside one of Madison's favorite toys. Yup, earbud parts, chewed earbud parts. Clearly not enough to make two entire earbuds though. I immediately called the vet & he wanted to x-ray her. DH felt awful about it, but he couldn't believe she'd do that. He couldn't accept if he'd have put them in the case, 4 inches away from where he set them she wouldn't have gotten them. Clear as ever on the x-ray you can see teeny bits throughout her digestive tract. The good news is they were tiny and moving through. I was to give her fiber and water to help keep things moving. She's acted fine. She had another x-ray yesterday and the vet has declared her earbud free! Let me tell you, those were very expensive earbuds!! But she's fine and all's well. DH has relaxed also.
I'll catch up with the rest of you when we get back. DH has PT today. I've canceled everything else on our schedule until Wed. We'll not be out on the ice. Let's be safe everyone.
1 -
Thank goodness Madison passed those parts. I know you all were so scared.
Looks.like tomorrow won't be too bad but then the bottom drops out. We're right on the edge so we may have ice. The last time this happened the ice broke dozens of electric poles that had to be replaced before we got power back.. Wind chills all weekend will be below zero.
The guys from South Africa just fed. I imagine they dread this coming weather. It worries me that the hay is a quarter mile from the barn. We fed just behind the barn so they could eat and get back inside. The girls falling through the ice trying to get water worries me, too.I will try to keep water in the tank for them but getting out there may be a problem. Don't want to fall. I will Keep watch and call Mike if I see something awry.
I have several bunches of daffodils up so will cover them. The japonica buds have frozen. I am ready for Spring!!

My car does not have any additives except coolant,gas/oil and windshield cleaner. I have never heard of car additives. What are they for? Why does my gas tank have to be full? What is Seafoam?
Yes…I do have my grandson make a 20 minute drive on the highway weekly just to keep the battery charged.
Spectacular photo!!!
Lorita …daylight is still dangerous. A gun by the front door??? How frightening!
0 -
Lorita. It might be better if the stranger saw the GPs barking at him. Just a thought. Im so sorry a lot of you are facing a big snow storm. Pull out all your big heavy blankets while you have light to find them. Maybe call Darwin, before you go outside and again when you get back in. Take care we worry. Hugs Zetta

I think I have done about I can to prepare for the storm. I topped off the water tank and checked the barn -no one in there yet. Put the Seafoam in the car and drove up to see.how much hay they set out-six 1800 lb bales. Should last three days, maybe.
Put Seafoam in the PU and drove to he mailbox and let it run a while. I tried to check the diesel but.broke part of a stick off in the gas tank. Put them in the carport.Put buckets.over all the frost free hydrants and brought in the hose. Will cover the daffodils later.
Judith. Seafoam is a gas or diesel additive to put in the fuel tank.It cleans everything the fuel touches and stabilizes the fuel and.prevents moisture in the fuel. Our tree man and Bryon told me about it and two or three more. I have heard moisture can accumulate in a less than full fuel tank.
The tow truck is was way outside the yard-not close to me. Good idea though to let Stormy out. Judith I also have a pistol three feet from the.bed and another one closeby. Darwin sleeps with one under his pillow. The GPs sleep in the bedroom and Stormy hears everything - very alert. If I get up he watches until I get back in the chair or bed.
Zetta, if I get snowed in Darwin couldn't get here but he would try. I will call him Though and will wear my.medical guardian for sure. One more trip outside to put cedar and moth balls under the hoods. Back later.

We are expecting extreme cold - low of -9 and high of 3 tomorrow. There will be wind chill added to that too. We are not expecting snow here in central Iowa. Thinking of you all. Stay safe.

Saw a PSA suggesting we fill our bathtubs in case our pipes freeze. That way we can flush toilets, wash, and even drink it if we boil it for a full minute.
Beth, that's cold! We expect unusually cold temps too, with some snow. Some places expect an inch of ice, and others (like parts of Virginia) expect more than a foot of snow. Brrr
