Wow, Beth, that's a great photo! I bet it was very cold where that guy was standing. 😄

Like I mentioned, we ended up seeing some color, but there was a lot of fog where we were so the colors were muted.

Lorita - I'm glad you explained about Seafoam. I had no idea what it was.

All of you with the cold, snow, and ice - be careful out there. It sounds like you're all prepared.

I can't really complain about our weather. I mean, it's cold, but like 40s during the day, and high 20s-low 30s at night. We have some rain in the forecast, but no snow. Of course we haven't gotten to February yet, so we're not out of the woods yet. Like you, Lorita, I'm ready for spring!

I've been slowly sharing the link to my blog with members of my family and with friends. So far, so good! One of my cousins actually posted a comment on one of my posts (she approved of the post), so that made me happy. I'm not super thrilled to be on bluesky, but it's better than twitter/x, so I guess there's that. I've got the posts set to post automatically on Tues & Thurs, so at this point I only just have to monitor the wordpress site for comments and/or spam. It feels like progress.

Be sure to keep a small stream of water running, especially the hot water and keep cabinet doors open where there are water pipes. My kitchen water pipes are on the north side of the.house so I also put a small electric heater there. Carl, it Is a Good idea to keep some extra water just in case. Fifteen years ago we had about 20" of snow and were snowed in and were out of power for over two weeks. Some men from North Carolina were the ones who restored ours.

Just heard what sounded like a pack of coyotes as close as the barn. Really upset Stormy. Sounds like we may be okay until mid afternoon tomorrow. Everyone stay safe and warm. I think I will cover the front steps with a serape or rug to keep off the steps so the GPs can get out and in.Good night.

Eaglemom yikes! about Madison! I'm so glad he passed the ear bud.

In Alaska, before the days of electric engine block heaters, cars were just kept running to keep the engine from freezing. For my Volkswagen, after a certain temperature, I can't remember now, the engine heater wasn't powerful enough to keep it warm. So I had to improvise. I heated charcoal briquets in an aluminum pan, and after the flames had died down, I placed the pan beneath the engine, which was in the back, for about 15 minutes. Eventually even this didn't work.

So after I had bundled up in my parka and mukluks, I took off walking from where I lived to the medical clinic where I worked, about a mile away. Temp was 50 degrees below zero! Always someone driving along would stop and give me a lift. In Alaska, it is forbidden to pass up someone walking. The base had a shuttle bus but it did not come out to the trailer park where I lived. Those were the days!

    Are solar-powered generators a thing?

    Stay warm!

    Good night.

    Good afternoon—

I made a Costco run earlier. The place was crazy; I have never seen the gas lines so long in all my years of membership.

I'll get mom out to stock up tomorrow or Saturday. It's been a while since she shopped and she seems to have no sense of urgency regarding her coming lack of rides.

Ron— I hope the pedi date and lunch went better than last week. I wonder if the improvement in your O2 levels is down to less exertion moving around in a smaller space or perhaps it's weather related.

Mom has both COPD and asthma as well as CHF impacting her O2 levels. Air that is too hot, too cold, too humid or dry/windy will cause a drop from her baseline which had been 92-95 before her last hospitalization.

Gothic G— Surveillance pricing is the unholy union of the worst of technology and the worst of human nature. I recall when I moved from my old home in a nice community to this one which is in a more desirable and therefore affluent one a mere 6 miles away. The price of all manner of things went up— prices at the grocery store, the cost of a having a plumber replace a faucet, the HVAC annual maintenance plan.

Carl— I always keep the tank topped off in cold weather. Aside from reducing the risk of water condensation freezing in the fuel lines, it provides a nice warming and charging station. I waited almost 15 minutes in line at Costco yesterday. It reminded me of the old gas crisis days.

Eaglemom— That was some expensive snack. I'm glad Madison is not the worse for the experience. FWIW, there's a whole genre of Face Book Reels featuring cats/dogs swallowing earbuds and owners recording the sound of their playlists from inside their bellies.

Lorita— Please be careful outside during the snow. Especially while toting your ax.

Iris— That's some next-level cold. I had dinner with a friend last night who is headed to Alaska Saturday to meet his nephew. The devoted uncle is flying out to see the fishing boat he's helping his nephew buy. I'm not sure where he's headed exactly, but he says the weather will be better than what we're expecting here.

    _______________________________________________________

I hope all impacted by the coming storm get through without any major issues.

Morning, Iris, that sounds awful. I bet a dollar you were wearing thermals. I have been wearing them for quite a while already. The GPs have been out, just Let them in and the North wind is.blowing and is so cold and it is just beginning. We may have a little sleet today but it really begins with heavy snow tonight. Iris, we had something we hooked up to our diesel tractor to keep it warm so it would start when it was so cold, really worked well. I remember one winter when it was so cold and snowy we got ready to got out to feed and I had on so many clothes Charles had to pull me up into the PU.

Don't know how I can feed the.birds with the strong wind. May blow down the feeders but will try. Maybe put the feeders on the floor.

You all stay in and.be safe. Ron, glad you got your tire replaced. Wen we were working and had a 60 mile round trip to work we used studded tires. Really good.on ice and snow, not so much in mud. Do they still make them?

    Good morning.

Yes Lorita, I wore thermals and looked like the Pillsbury Dough Girl with all the layers. I also had studded tires on my VW in the winter. Although in the Fairbanks area, the main roads are mostly clear of snow and on the base the roads were kept clear.

I used to add an additive to my tank every week, it was supposed to help with condensation. I loved living in Alaska for the time I was there, even with the cold, but it is nice not to have to deal with so much now at my age.

It's nice to be able to stay cozy at home in times like these. But there is so much preparation needed to get through inclement weather. And then many people do go outside. Stay safe, everyone!

    Good morning.

The very cold rain has started here. I wonder, does the rain wash away all of the pre-treated stuff they've put down on the streets? Anyway, I have no intention of leaving the house unless absolutely necessary. We can get by very well on what we have. Beside, yesterday the store shelves were bare. I can only imagine today there is less stock to choose from. We'll be just fine. The freezing stuff is supposed to hit early evening. Lots of churches, etc have already announced closings on Sunday & some businesses closed on Monday. They are taking this storm seriously, as it should be.

Yes, I'm so glad Madison had no adverse effects from eating the earbuds. She chewed them into bits and pieces. There was no way they'd be playing anything. No music could have gone through them. I guess I'll have to look at wireless headsets for DH.

I hadn't thought of studded tires in forever. We used to have them in central KS. I don't know if people still use them or not. They were great though.

HB in getting ready for your surgery has the surgeon suggested increasing your protein? Many surgeons do. Will you have an ice machine or use jel packs? If your going to use an ice machine you might want to purchase the tiny water bottles and freeze them. Then use them and cold water in the machine. When they thaw out (which will be quite awhile) put them back in the freezer and use others from the freezer. I am a pro a knee surgery / knee replacements. Don't hesitate to ask any questions.

DH is needing lunch. I'll check back in. Everyone be safe.

I went to get the car serviced and tires properly inflated this morning and was told there is no bread in the supermarkets. People are stocking up.

It's 20 degrees here with a 16 mph wind from the northeast, which is balmy compared to northern States but doesn't feel very warm to me. It will be about 3 degrees when it starts snowing around 3 AM.

Iris, there are solar generators, but you have to have a mattress-sized battery in your garage to store the power if they are to be useful when the power lines are down. It costs the price of a pretty good car to have such a thing installed. Solar generators don't work very well in cloudy weather or when they are snow-covered, either. They are great for running air conditioners in Pheonix, not so great in some other places. I have a natural gas generator, mostly because I have to use a CPAP whenever I sleep or even nap.

I thought of another reason to keep fuel tanks full in winter. Service stations operate on electric pumps, and buying fuel can get difficult if power lines are down. That's also a reason to keep some cash in the house, for use when/if credit and debit cards aren't working.

Fun fact: Next week will be Cheeseburger Week (January 25-31) according to the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce. The cheeseburger was invented in 1924 by Lionel Sternberger in his father's restaurant, The Rite Spot in Pasadena CA. In order to hide his mistake of burning a hamburger patty, he covered it with a slice of cheese. The rest is history. Several local restaurants will offer special cheeseburger menus during this promotion.

Actually, I am not a cheeseburger fan, I like my burgers without cheese. I like lettuce and tomatoes and special sauce or ketchup on a toasted bun. How do you like your burgers?

Iris I look like that now but that's okay. I just checked and it says it's 35 but feels like 19. The north wind.is terrible. The girls are south of the.house.out of the wind trying to find a bite of grass. We fed.hay there so they could.be out of the wind. If we get a foot of snow it will be hard for the young calves to get up to the hay- maybe the moms will leave them in the barn. Wish they would put some.hay there Now it's in the coldest place - kind of elevated with nothing to stop the. wind.

Tried to call my BIL North of Amarillo but couldn't get.him. His daughter finally answered and said he was having phone trouble and had just brought him another one. No snow.but very cold because of the wind.

Thank you for the call, Sandy. As soon as we finished Stormy said.it was time to tinkle so both went out.. He let me know when he wanted in but had to go out and get Sheena up and in. Hasn't warmed up one bit.

    Time for Wagon Train, Zetta.

I like a burger grilled over wood or charcoal, on a rye bun with Worcestershire, onion and tomato, no cheese. French fries cut from unpeeled potatoes. Budweiser. In summer, without that cold wind. 🍔

No ice or snow here. The sun is shining, but the temperature has dropped to 16 degrees from about 20 at sunrise. The forecast is for the snow to start about 3 AM and continue through Sunday morning. Missouri weather is real hard to predict. I remember once in Kansas City they predicted one to five inches and we got 15! That was fun 😲

    Hello Porch Friends

Lorita, I don't watch Wagon Train, every day like I used to. I think I have seen them all a few times. Now I have been watching, Law and Order, Special Victims or the ID investigation channel. Im watching the ID channel right now.

Iris. I like cheese on my hamburger, with lettuce, tomato, onion, manoaise, mustard and catsup. I like them best barbecued. Now I wish I had one, this is pizza night for us.

Im thinking about all of you, especially the ones dealing with the bad weather. Your in my prayers.

    Take care all, Hugs Zetta

One good thing about living in a camper is it doesn’t take much to keep it warm.

Used to like cheeseburgers with mustard, lettuce and onions. Haven't had one in years.

Very cold and windy here but went out and turned on the water to fill the tank In the lot., Covered four clumps of daffodils, then went back in a few minutes to turn off the water! Covered the hydrant with a bucket and brought in the hose. Girls are still up at the hay- they know the snow will be here later so just one last bite. I did take my phone and wore the guardian. Now they predict up to 16" of snow here in two bouts. Judith may be getting some snow now.

Have you all watched the movie "The Day After Tomorrow"? I saw on the news that lots of store shelves are empty so people are stocking up.

My internet service provider suggests I charge my cell phone etc. That's another good idea.

No pretty sunset today, there is a bank of dark clouds in the west. We know what that means!

When I was getting my car serviced, the topic of the senior center came up. When I related that some people who lunch there get no other hot meals, and that some of us live in cars or on the street, the service writer gave me $30 from his wallet as a charitable contribution. I'll turn it in next week and see if I can get him a thank you on senior center letterhead. There are good people in this world.

That is so true, Carl. Good for him! There is need everywhere.

Iris, I had been helping Sheena get her back end up and it wss hurting my back.. Mike told me at the clinic they put a towel around the dog in front of their back legs and that way tney don't have to bend. to lift it. I think I would still have to lift a lot with a towel or thee lifter. Happily now if I really encourage her she usually can get up.! It might take a couple of tries to get up - I can identify with that because I do the same getting up from a low chair. Thanks for thinking about it for me.

According to the radar the snow is almost here. I hope it is.big flakes before I go to bed. Why is snow white?

It's snowing west, north and south.of us.but not here yet but can't be long. Trucks on I-40 are pulling into truck stops for the night so roads are getting slick.

Eagle, you would think rain would wash it off.but they have been putting brine on roads around Tulsa for 24 hours. Are you all getting ice?

Weather just said we may get 18" of snow in our area. Good night, sleep tight.

Tiny ice pellets just started falling when I was out with Madison. The temps 32 but the north wind is really blowing. I think its just getting ready to start coming down. I feel like a kid - I want to go to bed, but I keep walking to the windows to look out and see what's happening!

    Sleep well.

Oh my gosh, so much happening with the weather! I've been hearing about it here and reading about it in the news. Be careful you guys! It's pretty cold in the PNW (mid 20s tonight), but nothing like what's going on elsewhere in the country.

Lorita - I've been hearing coyotes the last few nights. At first I thought it was dogs, but then realized it wasn't.

I remember The Day After Tomorrow. That movie! My favorite part was when the killer wind was whipping through the city, freezing everyone in its path. It blew its way through the NYC library and those plucky heroes slammed the door and kept the wind out! That'll show that mean old wind!

HB - Surveillance pricing is evil. It's always fun to hear the lobbyists try to tell us why it's good for us.

There are videos of owners listening to their playlists in their pet's bellies from swallowing ear buds?? 😳

Iris - You were out walking in -50 degree weather? I can't even imagine that. You have to be mighty tough to do that. Me? I'm a weather wimp.

I didn't know that cheeseburgers originated in Pasadena. I'm not a cheeseburger fan either. Back when I was eating meat, I'd like them as rare as I could get them. I'd add mustard (and lots of it), pickles, lettuce, and a tomato slice. No mayonnaise or onions. I remember really liking In-N-Out burgers too. If I ever have burgers now, I have them with impossible meat (it's plant based), mustard, pickles, lettuce and a tomato slice. For me burgers are a delivery device for mustard.

And now, back to writing. 🙂
