Regarding names—a few years ago I had occasion to drive my elderly neighbor to Urgent Care. As she had to stay a while she asked me to come back home and check on her husband, who had Parkinson's, which I did. I told her to call me when she was ready to be released.
When I got back to Urgent Care, the receptionist said they had no one by that name. I called her about ten times on the phone, no answer. I described her to the security guard and decided to just wait. Eventually she did come out. What was the problem? She was registered under her maiden name! This woman had been married for over sixty years! And she had turned off her phone so she never heard my frantic calls. The security guard had asked me if she could have been listed under a different name, but I said no. I was wrong.

Afternoon. Hot and breezy here,as usual. Filled watertank, and watered plants, then legs ached..I need a couple of lengths of.hosts together to make watering easier. The Caladiums are beautiful so want to keep them going. Legs are ok.now.
KATS is Kibois Area Transportation System. It says jt serves my area. Never used it.but do see cars and small vans when I'm in town. Patsy and Jack used them.once. My problem is coordinating my doctor's appt. And the ride. Surely won't need more than one ride until my car is ready.
Stormy barked at ,5:30 this morning and awakened me. He never has done that so we went out and looked around, from the porch. He probably heard coyotes coming in from hunting. The driveway alarm didn't go off. Odd thing.- it starts going off every few minutes about 1130 and.continues for a couple.of.hours. Must have something to do with sun position and shadows.. He responds the first couple.of times by going to the window and barking Then ignores.it. Curious-- how do you all.pronounce Coyotes? Around here we say ki oats!

The Imperial Dictionary by John Ogilvie published in 1885 (an extension of Webster’s original dictionary), shows two pronunciations with the “kai-oat” pronunciation first, but Webster’s 1913 Unabridged Dictionary flips that around and shows the three-syllable pronunciation first, likely pronounced “coy-oh-te,” and then also appears to include an alternative two-syllable pronunciation. It seems that at least in the United States, people have pronounced it both ways for a long time.
For what it’s worth, the “kai-oat” pronunciation seems to be mostly limited to the United States and Canada. Nobody outside those two countries reported saying “kai-oat,” and the Oxford English Dictionary doesn’t include a two-syllable pronunciation. (But the Collins Dictionary does. Argg.)"

I say it either way. Or song dog. Actually some say kai-oh-tay or kai-oh-tea. It is appropriate for a shape shifter to have more than one name.

Beth, thst is very interesting. I always thought "city" people added the "e" on it. That pronunciation rubs me the wrong way..In Yellowstone the Indian man who drove his boss around pronounced it the right way. Sorry Iris and others. Beth, the Collins dictionary?
Carl,I love calling then song dogs.I really hear them here very close to the house. Have seen them between the house and pond. A few years ago a.Hunter's dogs ran one to ground. The hunter and I got to him before the dogs injured him. He got up after he rested a minute and ran away.That guy sprayed my.pastures the next year but no more hunting. We have never allowed it.. Many years ago daddy lost a bull.probably. someone.hunting closeby, maybe with a .22.

I never heard the term "song dog". In SoCal we say kay-oh-tee.
The town next to me offers free rides to its senior citizen residents for any reason, including medical appointments, marketing, or social visits. My city doesn't offer this service. But we do have reduced fare bus service.

LOL, I am in sock hell. DS and I are organizing his room. I have found 2 drawers-worth of socks— one in an actual drawer and one on what ADHDers call a "floordobe". Last week he asked me to buy him some new socks for school and some no-shows for off-duty times.

Morning. Bad news on car.Called to see when it.would be ready. They have to order parts which will take four days so best guess is next week!.
Called KATZ. Out of city limits they.charge $1.50 per mile and $1.00 per stop. So to use them.it would.be about $20 each way. I read if you spray peppermint.oil.and.cayenne pepper spray together that will help or wrapping wiring in capsaicin laced tape. I.bought some.packets with spices in them that deter rodents. I need a.big bubble to.Park the car in.
Wny.is it that we have only had trouble like this the past year. Darwin's daughter is finding barn cats.for me. Maybe that is the reason because we used to have barn cats.But they go out to hunt and coyotes get them. Guess I.should get a tank or horse. Does ànyone else have this problem?

My friend had this exact same problem twice with her DH's very new minivan.
Her situation is very similar to yours in that she was doing 2 things Judith has warned you about. It was during COVID lockdowns, and her DH was working from home. If she needed to run any errands, she used her car which was parked behind his so his sat undisturbed long enough for vermin to become comfortable.
The other things was her feeding stations. She had a number of bird feeders and one for the squirrels her indoor cats enjoyed watching. These attracted not just squirrels which can be plenty destructive but also rats/mice.
The damage was not covered by the warranty; her auto comprehensive picked it up. After the second payout, her insurance company informed her that she would be responsible for costs going forward. Much as it would pain you, it would be best to take in any birdfeeders and stop feeding Rusty.

Good afternoon. Hot, hot and hotter is the forecast here. Today is day 9 in a row above 100 and the next 14 days are suppose to be worse. Ugh. Earlier in the morning I was watering my potted plants and Madison was of course outside with me. I was spraying the plants down and she had a delightful time playing in the hose. She'd run through the water, zoom to the other side of the yard, shake herself off and zoom full speed to the hose again! We were laughing and she had fun - a good way to start a Monday.
Lorita I'm sorry your having such issues with the car. Surely they have some vehicle you can drive since its taking so long. Your not asking for a new car to drive just something that works.
HB I hope you survive sock hell. That give me a good giggle.
Off to put drops in the eyes. Ugh. Let's be safe everyone.

Just a comment on the uptick in cars damaged by rodents. We were told by a Lexus service manager that the wiring in cars was formerly protected by a covering which contained asbestos which was fatal to the rodents. This is similar to the cover on early residential wiring. As asbestos was outlawed alternatives were sought. Unfortunately the alternatives do not effectively deter the rodents. I actually heard from another source that Toyota ( and Lexus) first substituted a soy compound which the rodents feasted on (must have been vegan) . After 2 issues of rodent damage our cars were treated with some kind of deterrent by the dealer. For the record we live in the 'burbs and I haven't seen a feral cat in months.

Yesterday I threw one cherry pit into the trashcan on my balcony, and this morning I was greeted by a trail of ants. These critters are attracted by teeny bits of food. I think HB and Judith are right, you will have to stop feeding Rusty and the birds. It's so sad, because I know you love having them around.

HB, you asked what I do for the Historical Society. I do lots; there are 8 "Board" members and I am one. We do the bulk of the work and the general membership basically attend our programs and pay dues. We are a small group. This Historical Society is only about 6 or 7 years old. We do not have a museum or our own building but hope to some day. We have a collection of items that continues to grow every month. I'm helping to catalog the donations and fill out donor forms that give us jurisdiction over the items that the persons donate. Also, I attend events such as Farmer's Market where we set up a booth for publicity. We have Board meetings monthly which I attend. We have educational programs 5 times a year, one of which I set up ("Beginning Genealogy"). I do research online and am on the Bylaws Committee. We will be celebrating the birthday of our city's founder (he's long since passed on) at an upcoming Farmer's Market and also at our September Educational program. This in part involves making, frosting and serving cupcakes. This, and other duties as requested. It's a great bunch of people and I enjoy all aspects.
Today I had planned to do a Body Composition screening at the gym. I prepared (no breakfast; hydrate well; no caffeine for 24 hours prior; no exercise for a day prior). I got to the gym and the machine had been moved. Found it, stepped on it - nothing. I asked 3 staff members to help if they had time. Since none of them knew how, or were busy, I gave up, ate the string cheese and coffee I'd brought with me and began exercising. Later, the boss man of the gym came in and I talked with him. I thought I could learn how to do the scan even though it wouldn't be accurate today, and then do it another day. He told me the machine was broken and he'd let me know when it was up and running and show me how to work it.
A little compliment I received at the gym: My friend Karen told me she could tell a difference in my body/how I look. I replied that I work hard and she said it showed. This made me feel good!
This afternoon I spread Milky Spore on the lawn. It kills Japanese beetle grubs (larvae) so should help for next year. We had thousands of J. beetles this year and they nearly defoliated two trees and my roses.

Sad news: Jackie the eagle has died. She had been treated at the Ojai Raptor Center for injuries and severe anemia. Her latest eaglets, born earlier this year, are on their own. Shadow, the father eagle, is seen flying around the area.

Tossed 2 kitchen sized bags of ghastly socks and nasty stained undershirts. Set aside some shirts that no longer fit for donation to the homeless drop-in center closet/thrift store. Tomorrow, "we" start in the closet— he doesn't know yet. He's taking mom to her hair appointment so I may go it alone for a bit.
The pulmonary hypertension specialist mom was supposed to see next week canceled on her and rescheduled for early November. This appointment was a reschedule from last month. He's only in this office once a month and the hospital system won't allow her to be seen at one of his other locations. I'll message her regular pulmo tomorrow; I'm not sure this isn't another "Hail Mary" to make her feel like they're doing everything.That's interesting about the Toyota insulation; my friend's minivan is a Toyota.

Darwin's wife is suffering from neglect. I would not be surprised if the new Dr reports it. Wouold not be surprised if the people who found his wife report it.
Stomach bug for 3 days plus ac went out and nose began to bleed. UGH. AC man due any minute then wil sanitze all sheets and towels and climb back in.

HB, I haven't been feeding them for weeks.. The car and PU are parked quite a distance from the yard so don't think that is the cause.
GMcG, they now cover the wiring with a soy product. There is a tape laced with capsaicin that repels rodents and I .have asked them about it but they couldn't find it. Today there are two or three places in that town that carry it. I will ask again. Today I again talked to them about a loaner.but was told what they have are out. They sent a text with what is needed but my f!ip phone won't let me see it. I have called several times and can't get a person.Tells me to leave a message and did several times but no call. I have to have an estimate for the insurance adjuster before I can file a claim.. No idea what is going on down there.
Tried to get in touch with my doctor's nurxe to see if I really need another test. No cure for it anyway. He has two nurses but only one today so no return call. I'm about ready to join Charles - nothing going right.
I ordered Peppermint oil and will mix it with tobasco and spray. I have Tom Cat ordered and a spray and the Vamoose. What else? With the Tom Cat it takes a while for the mouse to die so a barn cat might eat it and die. The only other time except last year with the car was years ago with an antique car. Hottest July on record for the USA.
Judith. She is.not being neglected. He does everything for her. They were both sleeping and she woke up.first and went outside. The.girls stopped by and told.his daughter who was spending the night. One daughter comes two.or three days, granddaughters.come once and another daughter spends one night. He and I talk 2-3 times each day and he can call me if needed. No.neglect there. They are a sweet coup!e. Carl, I have talked with daughters about someone.coming in a.few.hours daily.but do.not think they would tolerate a stranger.

Iris - with the cottage cheese, pudding, etc., it's the texture, not the taste. That mushy texture, or things that aren't quite solid but not quite liquid either (like pudding), are just hard for me to deal with.

Beth - I like vanilla ice cream, but my s.o. loves it. It's his favorite. Speaking of ice cream, I went to restaurant quite awhile ago, and they had sweet corn ice cream. I had to try it. It was shockingly good.

I'm interested in the Body Composition machine. What does it test for? Congrats on the compliment! Your hard work is paying off!
HB - the tangerine sorbet was homemade, just not by me. But I was so impressed with it that I found a recipe online for it. Lots of the recipes have sugar, but I also found several that use only the tangerines, no extra added sugar. I'll be going with that one. If it comes out, I'll let you know.
About the names - I have a cousin like that. Our family uses her nickname - Kitty, but non-family use her real name, or shortened versions of her real name. You can tell the relationship by who calls her Kitty, who calls her by her full real name, and those who use a shortened version.
Lorita - For coyotes - I pronounce it Kai Oh Tee. But then again, I'm an urban person. I've also never known anyone who pronounced it in any other way, so maybe it's a California thing?

Our weather was great today! Our air quality is back in the "good" category. Here's hoping it stays that way for awhile.
We're in for temps in the 80s this week so I'm going to peel and freeze the tangerines tonight so that I can make the sorbet tomorrow. I'll be up late tonight (Death Guild), so I have plenty of time. I'm excited about the sorbet because we're back to doing the ABCs. We'll be strict about it because we'll end it by the end of Sept. I'm meeting with one of Peggy's wine friends in wine country then, and I know there will be wine, and pizza at Diavola (her choice, and I heartily endorse that choice).

GG, I love mushy texture. Here's a story: My mother bought me baby food vegetables until I was nine years old in order to get me to eat vegetables. Even now, at home, I will mash up my vegetables to get them mushy like baby food. Shh! This is a secret, so don't tell anybody!

GG, do you use an ice cream maker to make the tangerine sorbet? I have made a raspberry sorbet in the past. I got the recipe in the booklet that came with my Cuisenart ice cream machine.
GG, the gym has a body composition "scale." You can also purchase one for home use. I'm not sure if they are as accurate. Here is some of what they assess: body fat %, presence of visceral fat, muscle mass, water analysis. Visceral fat is dangerous fat around the organs that we cannot see.
We are getting rain again today. The previous 3 or 4 summers we had drought - not now, in my area. However, just under half of Iowa is still in slight or moderate drought.
Lorita, I understand where you're coming from. So sorry you have so much to deal with! It's hard to be solely responsible for everything, without a partner to help. Prayers for you.

Busy here. School has started for all the great grands, so now Nana is broke 🤣 Took them all shopping in groups and either started the day with breakfast or ended the day with late lunch. They had fun.
Kindergarten home school at my house started yesterday. I had certainly forgotten how much energy it takes to keep up with an active 4, almost 5 year old. Breakfast, lunch, snacks, lesson plans and keeping track of progress, bath time at 4:30 and Mama comes at 5:30 to pick up. Somehow I have managed to also make dinner 🤪
Reading all the concerns of everyone and the joys helps keep things in perspective for me. You’re each in my prayers 🙏❤️

Good morning. It's hot but not horribly humid today.
Judith— you haven't gotten into the diarrhea-lettuce have you? J/K. (just kidding) I hope you and the HVAC are running well by now.
Carl— One of DS's old babysitters is a MSW these days. When she worked in APS, an elopement of a vulnerable individual like Donna would put a family on the radar for sure. A second, whatever the circumstances, would get them to act. That might be helping the caregiver find resources or reduce risks, but it could escalate to removal from the home.
Gothic G— DH loves vanilla, but he tarts it up so much with toppings that I don't know if it still qualifies as vanilla. Yesterday he asked for some Hershey's syrup (I'm more of a hot fudge person) and I picked some up at Walmart, of all places. I only get to a Walmart 2-3 times a year to stock up on weird stuff nobody else has. The syrup was close to $10— that seem excessive for the "experience". I guess rising cocoa prices and tariffs bumped the price up noticeably.
Side note, when I got home, I found 2 bottles of ibuprofen in one of my bags. I didn't get charged, so some poor achy soul evidently got home without their medicine. One of them was the PM version so maybe I did them a public service. I suppose I'll take them back next time I go to the Costco across the highway. Ugh.
Food textures aren't usually a big thing for me, but the lumps in cottage cheese just don't appeal. The recipes I use that include it all whip it daylights out of it which helps a great deal. Otherwise? <hork>
Beth— The historic society sounds like they're doing some great programs for the community. That's awesome. I think it's important to preserve the history before it's lost. Our historic association began in 1964 after the farmhouse used as Washington's headquarters after the Battle of Trenton was bulldozed for a gas station.
Nanny G— You're homeschooling now??? Yikes!!
Eaglemom and Goodlife— The weather you're experiencing sounds as if it would suck the life out of you. How soon until things become bearable?Lorita— It seems odd the mechanics "can't find" the deterrent tape but you've found 2-3 sources in your own little town (which speaks to a widespread issue). Smells like BS to me.
I'd be cautious about using a poison. If any animal ingested a poisoned mouse/rat, they would be killed as well. I wouldn't be surprised if this is ultimately what led to Jackie's death given the anemia.
$20/ride seems reasonable. An Uber between my house and mom's is around that typically.

The laundry and bedroom cleanup continues today. The man has 2 piles of short sleeved tees about 3' each. I've broken them into nicer plain tees, railroad tees (commemorative and work) and graphic (colleges, snark, cool vacation, etc) so now I have 3 shorter piles. Not sure that's progress.
Roofer comes today. Oh, joy! I need to run to the store for tea bags. None of the 3 stores I went to yesterday carry my brand.

Morning, Thank you, Ron and Beth, your replies made me cry. Things aren't any better this morning. I cannot get through to the dealer. Can't even get their operator except to leave a message with no call back. Called the insurance company for them to try and it's the sane for them. How do they run a business that way? I doubt they will begin work on the car until they get our OK and the parts.
About the tape- I don't understand it either. I didn't call the store, just what the internet said.
Going to be another hot day again. Guess it will be until mid September. I didn't fill the water tank this morning or water plants. Guess I should.
And, not sure about another test. I would if I had my own transportation. Maybe I will just watch for symptoms but it would ease my mind. You're right, Ron, I think we have a designated time to go, no matter what. Guess I'll go water the girls, can't do anything else.

yes it’s hot in Springfield too and wouldn’t you know it, my air conditioner is out. Maintenance told me it was a new unit and they would have someone look at it right away. Also I had a large oxygen tank delivered and now if power goes out, I can sleep without any concerns.

Ron, glad you got the new oxygen tank. When the VA doctor thought Charles might need oxygen they brought out a big machine that would make its own oxygen. Never had to use it.
Some progress. I have gotten two texts asking if I was interested in a 2024 Equinox. Answered this time that I had one in the shop but couldn't reach the service dept. He gave me a direct number to service. Seems they are changing systems. They gave me an estimate of $3000, twice as much as first time. He says they can not use the tape laced with hot peppers -have to use GM tape.
Talked with insurance and they will file claim. I will be surprised if they pay all of the $2000- my deductible is $1000. Still no loaner but can get a rental for $50 a day. AAA might pay some of that. The only thing I need one for is to get the second Hantavirus test. Will try to talk with doctor to see if it is necessary. If so, will use KATZ.
