Just need to talk to my friends(201)

DW and DS are asleep, and I just read a short story about a woman who fought her way through a heavy snow to care for a bird as a favor to a friend who was in hospital. As I thought "Who do I know who would do a thing like that?" they started eating bean porridge, and I knew. Merry day after Christmas, porch sitters.

Good morning
I went to bed a hour later than normal so slept in a hour later. Looks like maybe JeriLynn did too.
Good morning Carl.

Good morning.
We survived the holiday. Most gifts were well-received. The prime rib was a bit less medium-rare than I was aiming for, but the reverse sear rendered an exceptionally tender result. And I pulled off the Yorkshire pudding solo. We had some nice wine and conversation and too much food. Mom seemed to enjoy the day although she seemed a little afraid of the iPad we got her. She's Ok-ish with her iPhone these days but given her vision issues, we felt the larger screen might be better for her needs.
I tried to be in the moment and savor this time as who knows what the year will bring.
Mom's cat has a re-re-recheck at 3. She seems better than she was. I hope the vet thinks so as well. Last week's appointment went very sideways on me.
I'll need to pack my car with all the gifts that didn't fit in my niece's MINI Cooper when she drove mom home last night. We had large gifts for some reason this year. Mom got a safe I can barely life, DS got an exercise bike, niece got 2 massive Ecopots and 25# of fancy birdseed. She's sleeping over mom's tonight to take her to her swallow study Friday morning. She's off this week, so she offered to give me a break. So yay!
The friend who organizes our dinners out has decided we will be celebrating NYE on Saturday at 5. Her DD will be joining us; she's a cardiac NP who will be working NYE so this allows her to be included which is great. We'll get to order off the regular menu at regular prices, have the fireplace room to ourselves and get great service. It's a win for me but now DH and I are thinking of taking mom out for an early dinner on the 31st. Meantime, I need to find something festive to wear and make sure I have hose to wear.

Good morning.
HB do tell about a reverse sear on your prime rib. I've never done that. I will brag and say ours was quite good. And oh, the leftover's will be lovely.
Lorita were you able to watch our Chief's yesterday? They were humming! I think my favorite part was in the locker room after the win when Andy Reid came in dressed as Santa. He was having fun, as it should be.
Not a lot happening here today except for for watching The Rate Bowl. We're both Kansas State graduates and absolute die hard fans.
Be safe everyone, back later to check on you!!

@eaglemom
A reserve sear is pretty simple. You allow the roast to warm up on the counter for 2 hours before seasoning. Place the meat on a rack in a 250F oven until it reaches 125F for medium rare. This generally takes 3 1/2- 5 hours. It's best to use a probe meat thermometer. Remove, tent with foil and allow to rest for 30-60 minutes. This is when I cook the Yorkshire pudding and make a sauce. Once the pudding is done, I increase the oven temperature to 500F and brown the roast for 5-10 minutes.
Not only is this easy, the low temp keeps the enzymes that tenderize the meat as it roasts active resulting in a very tender result.

Good morning hope you all had a good holiday. Well I'm all packed to go back to the VA after i go to the dentist to have a filling.

Morning, the fog is finally lifting some but still cloudy with rain coming this afternoon. I doubt the electrician will come today. He wss going to fix one porch light switch and measure to see how much wiring will be needed to get power back to the barn. Darwin says half the lights are out in his barn, too, so he was going to check that.
D.says the roads are really muddy. His house is just by the road so he can tell. They will probably be muddy for a long time.
Sounds like everyone had a good day with plenty to eat. Back to watching The Waltons. I really enjoyed that show when it was on so nice to watch it again. Watched two or three episodes if Aerial American Arizona , California and Georgia. Saw Oklahoma a few years ago.
Eagle, I didn't get to see the Chiefs'game. Glad they won. Season is about over, isn't it.
I saw a few little birds at the feeders last evening so fed them. This morning they're working on all three feeders. I don't see or hear as many birds as in the past. I love Mocking Birds and Cardinals. Heard a Mocking Bird a day it so ago and saw a bright red Cardinal. Used to have Barn Swallows and they made their mud nests on the porch so we got to watch them. That nesting stopped when a snake crawled up and invaded a nest.
I saw the red whitefaced cow I've been watching coming out of the barn a while ago so she's okay. Hope everyone waits until the weather is better to calve. I hope they're able to feed them today.
Can hardly believe the year is almost over. Time is going so fast. Back later.

I had planned to rest on Christmas Day, yet I was very stressed. I drove to the hospital at night to visit my neighbor who had a massive stroke, yesterday was her 93rd birthday. I will have to use today as my rest day. I am very wiped out.
Carl, I don't understand your story about the bean porridge.

Anyone else remember when the TV was not on all Christmas day? Anyone remember when no one was texting? Anyone remember sitting at a table for Christmas dinner?

Gray and cloudy day to you Porchers!
I was up at 3 am but on a tear to get this house in order. Not taking the tree down but packing away all the other doo-dads and linens. Rearranged the kitchen cabinets to make better use of the space. I told DH I want floor to ceiling cabinets in the garage and he can either build them or buy them - I don't care which. The option is "do nothing" and I'll just take care of it myself. I'm tired of clutter inside and out. New Year, New Me. New Rules. lol
Carl, I put on a pot of pintos and made some cornbread to go with them, got some leftover ham (used some for seasoning the beans) and hash brown casserole and that's supper. Desserts are too numerous to count, lol.
DH is outside digging the front pond deeper; trying to beat the rain that begins tonight and goes thru the weekend and then COLD again. Two eagles have been flying around here today and have landed in the trees across the road for a rest. No sign of my 2 hawks today. Goats and babies are fine, as are the dogs, chickens, cat and bird.
Christmas Day visiting was fun. We took presents to each of the Grand's houses and spent quality time with each. So, it was a good day.
HB, I've never made Yorkshire pudding and was reviewing recipes. I'm not to good at baking so I'm a little hesitant to try… we'll see. Glad your Mama is better.
All right folks, I got to get back at it. Have a good afternoon. Iris, rest some today.

Judith, we were posting at the same time. I had the fireplace scene and music on the TV for our gatherings. I told people to put down their phones. And, I set places at the table, the island for everyone to sit to eat. My house, my rules. Phones are allowed for the teenagers after the meal and they do the dishes. Go JeriLynn!

Judith, I remember when TV was only on for a Couple of hours a few days a week. One of our local stations is celebrating 75 years and another 70 years being on air. The first shows I remember was 15 min. Long- Lookin' at Cookin' and Howdy Doody.
We had lots of company when I was young and our dining table wouldn't seat everyone at once so men ate first, then women and kids. Always sat at the table for all our meals. The last time I sat at the dining table was Christmas 2015' when Logan and Scarlet came to be with me. I always eat sitting in my chair, watching TV.
It is beginning to rain. The driveway alarm went off a little while ago. It was Bradley walking. He had been feeding Darwin's girls and got stuck so walked about mile.in the mud. He came to get the Gator to try to keep the girls away from the hay he was feeding until he could get help. Said Dion had also gotten stuck. Had our girls all upset. I told them what was going on and they would feed as soon as they could. I hear them bawling now so maybe help arrived. I can't remember Charles and I ever getting stuck feeding but we fed hay with the tractor. I do remember it being so muddy around the feeders that we had to carry feed from the road to the feeders.
JeriLynn, you need to slow down a bit. But, guess I was the same way when I was younger. I imagine your , what we used to call our avatar, implies you birth date might be 1966? I'm still watching The Waltons and thoroughly enjoying it. So many things they do on the show I remember us doing when I was growing up. I wasn't here during the depression but my family was pretty self sufficient, only had to buy a very few things. Back to the show.
Hope all of you are well and resting up after the holiday.

As far as I know I have never heard a mocking bird.
hope all went well at the dentist, David
I know very little to nothing about TV L O L. I do remember when there was no texting. I do remember everyone sitting at the table and eating and our family really kind of continues to do that. Once in a while, there might be so many people that we might sit at more than one table, and there might be a few people not at a table but for the most part we’re all at one or two tables.
JeriLynn I should have known you were up and at it.

MINT Yes it did.
When I return to the VA I will talk to the dentist about finishing the implant I started in Oct before I moved to the VA at Chelsea or if I should return to my dentist. My dentist said I would be able to finish it after April 21 2025.

I remember the Flag being shown when TV went off the air at midnight

The next time that I post I will be back the VA for the winter.
The next time I will go home will be when the weather warms up probably around Easter I don't want my wife driving in the snow.

Still raining. I just saw on the news that Systane Ultra PF eye drops have been recalled...Someone saw something in one of the vials. They think it might be some kind of fungus. I just got a new box a couple of weeks ago and have used them three or four times. Seems like there is always some kind of recall of something we have been eating or using. Called WM and their computer were down, will call again tomorrow.
They got stuck again today when they were feeding. They are just not used to Oklahoma mud yet. I can't talk because I think I've been stuck on every road around. They finally fed hay about dark with a tractor.
Good night everyone, sleep tight.

Iris, my story just meant that the kind of person who would brave a snowstorm to rescue a friend's bird is the same kind of person who would visit a friend in hospital on Christmas Day and rest the next day. In other words, people like you and others who post here.
Judith, we ate Christmas dinner yesterday at the dining room table without TV. Only three of us at one end of the table, but my son said Grace appropriate to the occasion and we had a nice time.
Lorita, I used to watch Howdy Doody on TV, and listened to it on the radio before we had TV. My ride to kindergarten came in the middle of the radio show, and the driver was listening to Arthur Godfrey. I suggested that there was better entertainment on another station, but she was not persuaded.
David, I had forgotten the flag at the end of the broadcast day. Thanks for the memory.

I remember. It was so long ago!

I think the first 24 hour TV was a news show called Monitor. A joke went around about a child who asked to stay up until his show ended, and that was the show.
0 -
I remember Howdy Doody and Clarabell the Clown.
My 93 yo neighbor who had the massive stroke is being released from the hospital tonight without a stay at rehab. She will hire caregivers 24/7 private pay because she wants to be at home.
I rested today. I still have some end of year tasks to complete. I've got to get on the ball!

Did anyone else see the Carol Burnett episode in which Howdy Doody died? Carol and Vicki Lawrence were made up in orange freckles and played the roles of Howdy's grieving wife and sister. I think it may have been the only time I ever laughed at a funeral. They were recalling his last words, which were:
"Hey kids, what time is it?"
His wife responded "It's Howdy Doody time!" and Howdy said
"Not anymore."

Good morning,
Been up since 1:30. Yes, a lot on my mind.
We have a funeral visitation for a church member today. It's so sad. He was 41 with a beautiful wife and precious 5-year-old daughter. A self-employed construction, heavy equipment kind of guy. DH has done some radiator work for him. Big guy. Shy, quiet, sweet. Good family man. He went to sleep Christmas Eve and didn't wake up. Our entire community is heartbroken for his family. So, if you get a minute sometime today, please send up a prayer or good wishes or whatever you may call it. They need it and I do too.
I've been packing up Christmas decorations this morning. Memories with each piece that I've had for years; some that adorned our tree or were under it since I was a child, so I'm just a little sentimental this morning.
I hope each of you have a wonderfully blessed day. And Carl, those pinto beans with cornbread sure were good after all the rich holiday food. 🥣

Good morning
JeriLynn I am so sorry for each one’s loss.
Carl glad things went well Christmas.Lorita mud is hard to deal with. Those poor people in western NC have had so much mud to deal with.
Take care

Good morning.
Temperatures are moderating here a bit,
Iris— I hope your friend's transfer home goes seamlessly and that she's able to create 24/7 coverage with a reliably good team.
David— Good luck with your implant. When I had mine done, I needed the periodontist to sign off before my regular dentist would add the crown. This meant another appointment and X-ray and then almost a month before I could be scheduled.
Jerilynn— How sad for that family and your entire community. The death of someone so young leaves a hole like no other.
Lorita— It's a single lot of eye drops in the recall— lot #10101. If you have questions, you can call Alcon.Judith— The TV on all day is a pet peeve of mine. DH does this but fortunately he doesn't have the sound on unless he is actively watching in the evening with me or DS. It's weird. He used to claim it was better for the actual TV (specifically the tubes) not to turn it on and off, but that technology is a thing of the past and, being a scientist, he knows this. FTR, when I met DH, I was one of those obnoxious folks who didn't. Were it not for DH, I still would probably not have one.
We did have the Netflix Yule log on while we opened presents— it actually crackles. And then he switched to the one with kittens. There weren't any phones at the dinner table on Christmas at my house. We don't see enough of each other to squander that time looking at screens. DH and I don't bring them to the table. DS will if he's decided to eat separate from us depending on the menu/schedule. My house is a center hall colonial, so the dining room is kind of boxed-in.

Mom's swallowing study is happening this morning. My niece came last evening with her sister and a friend to have dinner with mom. The good niece slept over and took mom to the appointment as a treat for me. She feels badly she can't do more to help but lives an hour away and works at a high pressure job some 6-hours a week. I'm curious to see the report when it pops up in her electronic chart.
I'm making a Talbot run later. My niece gave me 2 black cashmere turtlenecks because she couldn't find a second neutral and wanted to give me 2. I'll return the Talbot one (they just have rowdy Lurex and jewel tones left) and maybe get an organic cotton instead. I stopped in yesterday to see what's in-store currently. Two different friends gave me gifts that might go back. One is a shirt that's a near duplicate of the one from last year, also with Lurex and the other might not fit. The other sweater is NMS (not my style) and might go back as well if it's too big. I could also use a new wallet. DH bought me a new bag that's smaller than my current one. My current wallet is massive and has room for a checkbook and register. It's not a feature I need.
I hope all have a peaceful day.

Off to the bank, Trader Joe's and meat market…I intend to finish painting y New Year's cards and get them in the mail tomorrow.
I do not decorate during Advent and then everything stays until January 5th (Epiphany eve). This period is also called Yule and dates back to Stonehenge times. Most of the winter holidays are rooted in 'Light". Dick and I often shared gifts for these 12 days. Each day would have a theme. I really was fun. I think the 12 days became popular during Tudor time.s

JeriLynn, how sad for your church family!
Today is the second day of Kwanzaa, I missed the first day b/c I was too tired.

Afternoon, foggy morning but it has lifted but still cloudy. We stayed in bed until around 10 watching TV. GPs stayed out part of the night and are tired and sleeping.
HB, thanks so much for the information and link. The box I have is a different Lot but I did call Alcon.. Each box has 25 vials and it was one of 25 that had something in it so they recalled the entire Lot. So she said my box was okay. Made me feel better. I had used one vial and was using the second one.
JeriLynn, how sad for the family. Christmastime will never be the same for them.
I'm about Waltoned out. But it was such a good show, watching all the kids grow to adulthood. Guess I will have to find something else.
Going to try by best to get income taxes ready for Sam earlier this year. Maybe might be my New Years resolution. Need to get to the mailbox today and have to call the County Commissioner about our road.
Sandy, you were right, even though the horn or culvert is not in my property it is my driveway so if there has to be a new one, I have to pay for it and installation. He has some kind of new tool that might be used to clean it out so hope it works. There is another one across the road about 100 ft. down from my drive that is stopped up, too. I bet the road is flooded from all the rain. Back later.
1 -
Mint…are you Sandy?

Good afternoon all…….
HB thanks for the reverse sear recipe. I plan on trying that for the next prime rib. I'd heard about the Systane eye drops but promptly forgotten about it. I use the Systane Complete PF. I really like them, something that finally has helped my very dry eyes.
I leave my decoration's up for awhile. We both enjoy them. The tree in the den will then turn into a Valentine's Day tree and the dining room tree I'll do in birds.
We're going to run to Staples for ink for the printer. If the parking lot is crazy nuts we'll come home and order it off Amazon!
Be safe everyone.
