Just need to talk to my friends(201)

Judith, Sandy is Sasue. That's the name she uses when she posts. She's been on our thread for many years and had always been a good friend.
Darwin just came over on his mule (like a Gater) because of the muddy roads. I love peach anything and he brought peach jam and peach butter. A person couldn't ask for a better neighbor and person. He was a big help to me with Charles when he would walk away. Brought him home two or three times. He has a hard time sometimes with his wife who has alz.
Still cloudy but no rain. We've had about three inches altogether. Shoot, forgot about the Sooners playing today. Need to see if I.can get it.
Eagle, be sure to check your Lot number on the eyedrops. I also use Refresh but Systane is thicker. You talking about your Christmas trees reminded me that when I worked at the VA the people who worked in Fiscal kept a tree all year. They hanged it upside down from the ceiling and decorated it for each holiday. Really cute.

Well am back after Christmas I will miss my wife and family hoping to see them for Easter. I do not want my wife driving in the snow but she hinted I may not have to wait until Spring. I call her every day at least twice.

JeriLynn, that cornbread and bean dinner sounds wonderful. One of my favorite meals. My wife used to make cornbread with her own recipe, modified from the one on the side of the cornmeal box to suit her taste.
I'm so sorry for that young man's family. Talk about having the rug jerked out from under you. What a loss!

This talk of tasteful sweaters reminded me of a photo I took of my mother when she was about my age, 25 years ago. She was outdoors in winter, wearing grey sweater and slacks, and a red knit cap on her silver hair. The splash of red set her off, like a cardinal in a winter's hedge. I'll have to dig through my photos and find it.

I wore one of my new flannel shirts today, a black and grey plaid with a thin yellow line. The weather was just right for it, grey and misty all day, about 50 degrees F.
Years ago, I saw an ad for fleece outdoor wear. It pictured a man on a mountain ridge, in fleece and hiking boots. The caption read "Sometimes I meet adversity. When I do, adversity can kiss my warm, dry, fuzzy butt." That ad cracked me up for some reason.
It's 10 PM. Sleep well, everyone.

Good night, Carl. Your new flannel shirt sounds awfully pretty.
Our weather was about the same as yours today. Supposed to be foggy again tomorrow. Our weatherman said the highest temp this year was in a town about 25'miles from me-123.4 degrees and the coldest was 24 below wind chill in the northeast part. We had about 50" of rain even with the three month drought we had. I don't remember any snow and hope the persimmon seeds are wrong this winter.
David, looks like your weather is going to be snowy. Glad you're in a good, warm.place, among friends, there and here. Glad both you and Carl decided to sit with us on the porch. Now to get Ron back with us on a regular basis.
Good night, everyone.

We have had a lot of cloudy, misty weather too.

Morning,
I'm on the crazy sleep schedule again. Up at 1:30 yesterday. Rained most of the day. Got all the decorations put away between naps. Asleep in my recliner, up at 9 and took meds and back to bed. Up at 5am. Maybe I'm back on real time today. Rainy with temp of 61, possible storms. The humidity is 100% right now. We need the rain but no tornados please.
Getting ready to host little girls starting Sunday. The 6-year-old great granddaughter and then on Monday : the 7-year-old from DH's clan. I have activities planned and those do NOT include the Disco sound and light with a microphone machine that was a gift from Santa! Another "Jeri Rule" : DO NOT send toys that make racket to my house! LOL. All the Mama's are ready to go back to work due to their Santa choices this year. LOL Luckily, these two girls play well together. Some combos are not as easy to manage.
I'm looking at new living room furniture similar to something I've had in the past. The LR furniture is only 2? 3? years old but it isn't as comfortable as we thought it would be. I'm in a quandry because what I really want does not include a reclining option which DH insists on. So maybe a side chair. Gotta look and think. Also, what I want is cream colored.
And I'm cutting my hair. Waiting on the appointment.
We cleaned the fridge out today so that means I have to cook. Gotta decide what to make. And, even though we took Christmas dinner and groceries to Scottsboro, DH has said we have to take more this weekend or Monday. December birthdays are taken care of, need to get 4 BD cards together for January. May do that today. And sort the office to get ready for tax season. That's about it I think.
Hope y'all have a good day.

Morning, another cloudy, drizzly, cool day. Lots of tornado warnings already south of us, really south of Oklahoma for the mostpart.. Ron, be careful today. Looks like you're in the storm area. We, in Oklahoma, had 148 tornados in 2024, one short of the record last year.. Not a record you'd want to have.
JerLynne, do you ever slow down? I guess I was busy all the time when I was younger, too, but have slowed down for sure. Hopefully, you can get your sleep schedule back on track soon.I know it must be frustrating.
I hear the girls bawling and the horn honking North of us where they are feeding. It runs them north, then back south- looks like feeding south first would be better, but not for me to say..Hope they don't get stuck today.

Good morning! Soon 2024 will be just a memory. For some it was a good year, for some not so much. Praying that 2025 will be a happy and healthy year for all of my front porch friends. Especially thinking of Ron, CaroLynne, Jo and Joan.
I read an interesting (scary) article about the bird flu. It is said it could be our net pandemic. I wonder if our milk and/or meat supplies are or will be contaminated. Also heard of a cat getting the bird flu from cat food made from turkey that was infected.
HB, sounds like you received some nice sweaters and the ones that aren't your style will be returned for exchange. I do love cashmere!
Time to get moving. Exercise, cleaning, cooking then football this afternoon.

Good afternoon.
Damp and dreary here today.
I got a look at mom's swallow study. It appears her swallowing is within normal limits, but that she's experiencing an issue with her esophagus that is allowing reflux that is aspirated. My niece took her and the report says that "pt denied reflux". I know mom was diagnosed and treated for GERD when she lived in FL. Mom denies this as well. I dug through some records and found it noted in the records from her Fl pulmo who forwarded her records to the doctor here. I skip one appointment and things go sideways. My niece is a capable adult, but she's not as familiar with mom's medical stuff. She has access to the portals and records as mom's secondary agent after me and I do loop her in on new developments, but like me, she wasn't all up in mom's medical business until more recently.
I'm hoping to hear from the pulmo early next week. In the meantime, the SLP is recommending a GI consult at a minimum.
In better news, I returned 2 sweaters and 2 shirts at Talbot's yesterday. I came home with 2 sweaters, a shirt, a pair of jeans, an LBD and a $20 credit. Mom would be proud.
Having an early NYE dinner tonight with friends. We sometimes do the night before which is fine, but this feels ridiculous. I'm not cooking so I shan't complain too much.

Lorita, the weather is supposed to be up near 40 so the snow will melt and maybe ill be able to go to church on Sunday morning after last week I thought that I would never go to church until Spring because I use a rollator and it is hard to use in the snow but I miss going to church. Did I ever tell you that I once back in the 1960's I studied to be a priest for 2 yrs , but is was not for me and I do not regret it because I do not to have to to look back and "wonder what if"after 60 years should have become a priest.

Well I am back to the VA and can not wait until I get into a routine to help me live with my Dementia but I do miss my family and can not wait until I can visit them again. I told my wife do not drive to see me in the snow and wait until Spring.

David, don't they have a Church Service at the Veterans Home? I would think they would. Not good for you to get out in the snow. At our VA Hospital they had a Church Service over the headphones so patients who couldn't get to the Service could hear it..
HB, sounds like you did well exchanging things. I bet the store wss packed with people exchanging and after Christmas sales. I do hope everything turns out okay for your mother.
Eagle, I worried contanimation of milk and eggs from the.bird flu. For a while I only used almond milk but have gotten cow's milk the last month. Kind.of scary about pet food. too. Seems like there i s always something to worry about. Now I'm worried about them not feeding our cows this morning. Both Darwin and I wonder if we did the right thing in selling and leasing. If we hadn't had such a bad winter in 2021 we would probably still be feeding.
I ordered a pair of waterproof winter boots from QVC and even they were my normal size 9, they seem a bit short so will have to return them. I planned to wear them.outside here on the farm so will wear heavy socks with them. I found a similar pair I had gotten, who knows when, that will work for going to town- gray and the ones I need to exchange are cranberry.
Now I'm writing about things that don't matter so will stop and have some more hot tea. Need to pay a couple of bills and charities to mail Monday and get the boots ready for return. The.box is too big for the mailbox so will have to go to the post office. I have something to be witnessed anyway so will get that done too, if two people are around. Haven't watched football all week so maybe I will today or tomorrow. This time of year is not easy because of losing Karen and Charles around this time. Will be glad when March comes.

Lorita, they have a chapel in the building but as of yet there is no priest assigned so we go to the church o the otherside of the complex the VA provides a. Is to take us there but with the snow and ice it is hard for me to walk to the bus but the eucharistic minister does bring us holy communion it's not the same but it helps.
I do watch Mass from my home parish they live sream Mass every Saturday a d Sunday

HB, make sure to ask the dr about achalasia for your mom. I have the same problems, surgery fixed it for a few years, now the muscles don't work at all and everything I eat goes down by gravity.
Been raining cats and dogs all day and raining hard now with thunder.
I've got to learn I'm no spring chicken anymore. Thursday while putting my pants on, I lost my balance. Failed on my left side and hit my arm on the armoire. Arm is bruised, leg, back and neck hurts, but I'm walking. Being on blood thinner I need to learn to be more careful and sit down to put my pants on or stop wearing anything.lol
Nabilizer has finally been ordered for me, full pulmonary function test and pulmonologist visit have been scheduled for March.
Ron

Ron, I did the same thing last month. Like Dirty Harry said, a man has to know his limitations.
Lorita, pasteurized milk won't hurt you. The heat kills the virus. Eggs are fine too if you cook them. I wouldn't let a cat eat raw birds, a zoo in Washington lost 20 big cats to bird flu. The man who was in hospital with bird flu had sick chickens. Maybe chicken farmers need to wear masks.
David, you are very wise. You tried it and now you know.

Went to market today and saw some St. Valentine's Day Ding Dongs in a pink box. So, in about 6 weeks I can visit my neighbors with a gift. "Happy St. Valentine's Day from the Ding Dongs across the street." Payback time!
2 -
Ron, happy to see your post. So glad you weren't hurt more than you were. The exact same thing happened to our neighbor years ago. He wasn't able to call us for help for three days. It broke his hip and he didn't survive. So, we need to sit down when we put on our pants or shoes. Just saw the weather and thought about you. I hope the nebulizer will help you. Stay safe.
I went to the mailbox about 4 and heard a chain saw somewhere. Would bet it wss Darwin cutting wood. I was going to drive around the east side of our section to check on the girls but it was too muddy. Supposed to be foggy, again, in the morning. I am tired of fog. At least it will be in the sixties the next two days. Still watching The Waltons and enjoying it.We actually watched those kids grow. Hope everyone in the path if the storms stay safe.
Eagle, did it get as far west as Dallas?I hope not.
Sleep well, everyone.

I got "0" done today and enjoyed every minute of it…lol
Ron….you have to hold on to something.

Beth, I think a lot of influenza outbreaks are zoogenic. Swine flu came to us from domestic pigs, and some other outbreaks of flu were traced to domestic ducks that were kept in houses. Those outbreaks originated in Asia and spread here, but this one appears to be arising in humans in the USA.
Dr. Fox, a vegetarian veterinarian who used to write a newspaper column argued that we should all embrace vegetarianism and leave animals alone, for our own good. Not gonna happen here. The conventional wisdom where I live is "vegetarian" is a Greek word meaning "lousy hunter." LOL

I tripped in my bedroom before Christmas, fortunately I caught myself before I went all the way down. I scared myself, suppose I really got hurt? More to think about.
Iris

Iris, I think those of us who live alone or with people who are unable to help us should consider those "come help me" bracelets or necklaces. I haven't done it myself, but it's on my to do list.

Good morning,
Managed to finish putting away decorations and vacuum everything. I'm still finding glitter every place. Thinking of what to make for dinner today. Saw a recipe for chicken breast stuffed with brie and apple slices. May look at that for tonight. Have to get some "kid" lunch stuff from the grocery.
So far the storms have missed us though 3 am is supposed to be the witching hour. Quiet right now.
Falling is serious business at our ages. Iris, an alert pendant or other apparatus is in order. The kicker is: you have to wear it. Speaking of; Lorita - where is yours?
We have another Mama waiting to kid. DH moved her to the front pasture to be closer to the barn. He has also made some changes to the hall of the barn to make feeding the separate groups easier for when we go on our trip in January.
Tomorrow is oldest daughter's birthday. I'm going to make her a cake and deliver it today.

Iris, after my fall my eyes have been opened a little wider. Being alone makes you wonder; what if I can't get back up, if the phone rings, how do I get to it, friends check on me, but not daily. I had a alert device that either attached to your side, your wrist or wore around your neck. Couldn't stand it! I just need to learn to be more careful. I will try and make it to church today, I don't know if it's the rainy weather or the fall, but I have a lot more soreness this .morning.

Hello just waiting for t he bus to go to church
Foggy outside going up 50 today all snow is gone.

Good morning.
It's another foggy and damp day here. It's going to hit the 60s with rain holding off until after dark but still just yucky. I want to head to mom's to scrub her entry mat. When the cat was on the first antibiotic, she took to using it in lieu of her box. It's an LLBean "waterhog" so I can blast it with detergent and a hose and set it to dry in the garage.
Lorita— Carl is correct that heat will destroy bird flu virus making pasteurized milk and cooked eggs or meat safe. The pet food in question was a raw turkey.
What's with shoe sizes lately? I find they're not very consistent, so I hesitate to order online even from a brand I know fits well. My niece got 2 pair of boots for Christmas and neither fit— both were too large. Have we gotten into vanity sizing for feet?
David, I hear you on trying to navigate a rollator through snow. You'd think the VA and the church would be more proactive about clearing walkways for safe access. Mom's new to her rollator. She really only needs it to haul her concentrator so her hands are free. Her community handles snow removal, but often small amounts are managed with rock salt. I get it allows them to be proactive, but her driveway was crusted with it and that meant me washing the wheels off after any outing last week to protect her floors. I've noticed a few folks on her block keep a walker on their small front porch. I always wondered why. I now suspect it's that they have an "outdoor" walker in addition to one inside the home to avoid this extra task.
Jerilynn— Glitter is the herpes of the crafting world.
Ron— Thanks for your thoughts on asking about achalasia. I was thinking of you as I read her report because it sounds so similar to what you have described here over the years. You and mom have a lot of conditions in common with the COPD and pneumonias. The report found some irregularity in the pharyngeal phase of swallowing with potential backup/presbyesophagus. They described it to mom as "food just hanging out in her esophagus".
She's scheduled to see her pulmo at the end of January. The SLP suggested a GI consult. I hope he reaches out this week when the report crosses his desk. He's probably my favorite of her current medical team.
I saw pictures of my BIL on Facebook last night posted by his son's stepdaughter. He looks really different. He's got severe cardiovascular disease, and it's changed his whole physical appearance so much that I didn't recognize him at first. Of the brothers, he was the Robert Redford-esque handsome one. Tall, athletic, slim, and blond. He's puffy, bald and swollen. I suggested to DH that perhaps we visit later this winter. DH was really shocked by not recognizing his brother.
I need to figure out something for dinner. DS is working, so it'll just be DH and myself. I feel like we've been stuffing ourselves with rich and indulgent foods all week. I did make a sensible choice last night— an arugula salad and crusted cod for an entree. Dinner was nice, but the men in our party tend to show off with their byob wines. I'm not complaining. We had some brag-worthy wines. But only one person brought a nice white. Of the 11 of us, 8 ordered fish of some sort. Two of the women in the party only drink white, so that bottle went before the entrees arrived.

For those of you who are concerned about being alone and falling but don't like the "button" type device you might want to consider an Iwatch with fall detection. Yes they are pricey but worth it if it can get you help when you need it.
The extra advantage to the Iwatch is that most of us put on our watch daily without a thought…not so with the pendant.
