My young dad is gone but still here

My father is 65 and in the late stages of Alzheimer’s. I just got guardianship and conservatorship of him after discovering his wife could not care for him properly. I just got him into an assisted living facility with memory care, but after only two weeks they can’t handle his behaviors and we are seeking for a new facility. This is very difficult. He’s so young and he’s already gone, yet still here.

Oh no! I'm so sorry to hear this. I hope you are able to find a good place for him. Does his current place have any suggestions?

I am so sorry for your reason to be here. Early onset is an especially cruel form of dementia as it dramatically impacts young adults who should be focused on building their lives and who find little understanding from peers as an older caregiver might.

It's not uncommon for it to be difficult to place a "younger" man with dementia. They are painted broadly as being potentially difficult because of the potential for physical strength and sexual behaviors even if this isn't a problem individually.

Is there an option for dad to be transported to a geripsych unit for short stay medication management and then transfer to MC? Often the social worker in such a unit can help families find a better fit.
