I, at a very. young age, would read Poe under the covers with a flash light…lol
My favorite baby gift is a board book copy of The Jabberwocky.
"Terrible Oath"……I can't wait to say that !!!!! For example " do not park your car in back of mine terrible oath.

Good morning.
Does anyone remember The Bobbsey Twins? I think I had all the series when I was young.

Yes! Also Nancy Drew.

Good morning Front Porch Rockers.
Barbara. It's nice to see you posting. I'm glad your still writing, children need books to read and spending less time, playing computer games. Please be careful, using your right leg.
Iris. I hope you enjoy your new sewing machine, I'm sure that will keep you busy. Yes, I also like WinCo. When my daughter lived in Seattle, I would always do a big WinCo, shopping before I came home. And yes, I also, remember the Bobbsey Twins.
Mint. Thank you for the update, on JoC. I miss so many postings at times, I was hoping someone knew. I do miss her. ❤️
Judith. That's good news, you had no tornadoes. Are underground garages, normal, in certain neighborhoods?
Good day to all, Lorita, I'm watching Wagon Train. Hugs Zetta 🫂

Nancy Drew was violent. Someone went through the entire series and counted how many times she was knocked unconsciousness by an unseen assailant and determined that a person with that many concussions would be shuffling and drooling, not solving mysteries. I read The Hardie Boys and Tom Swift, and one or two of the Nancy Drew series, but never got around to the Bobbsey Twins. I remember Tom Swift had to use tear gas to escape in his flying boat after a pitstop in Afghanistan - some things haven't changed much!
I messed up today. I went to the DMV to get a handicap placard for the car and forgot it was the last day of the month. Every procrastinator in town, whose license expires in March, was in line to renew their plates. I know better, I just forgot what day of the month it is.
Both of the houses I owned in Kansas City had drive-in basements. The tornadoes sent us there a time or two. I remember once the tornado siren was on and the storm sewer had backed up, leaving water in the basement and our laundry basket floating in little circles, and us perched on the stairs like a family of raccoons. The storm sewers got replaced pretty soon after that.
It's a pretty day. I'm going to finish unloading the car and enjoy some of it. Good day, friends.

Carl - drive-in basements??? The things I learn here! I had no idea such things existed until just now.
Children's books and violence .. hmmm. I'm trying to remember what I used to read - mostly not children's books, although I liked fairy tales - which were always dark. There was a book series I liked about the Tucker family. Ha! This blog post describes those books as "guilty pleasures." But as a 7-year-old, I didn't know anything about that. They were fun books. And yes, I still have both of those books that are pictured (plus a few more of them). 🙂 I also read Nancy Drew and kind of remembered that she was always getting knocked out from behind. But as a child I spent most of my time with Agatha Christie and HP Lovecraft (with a dictionary by my side.)
Did you guys ever get Scholastic books in elementary school? Parents could order the books for their kids and then they'd show up in a big box in the classroom. It was like Christmas when the teacher passed out the books. My two favorite books from that time period were Mr. Blue - about a Siamese cat adopted by a second or third grade class. "Hilarity ensues." The most impactful book I got was called Dinosaurs and More Dinosaurs. I was in maybe 5th grade for that one.

Today has not been easy! Lou and I married March 31, 1967 and I miss not wishing a happy anniversary for the first time. If it will load, I will post a short clip of our life together.

I don't remember what I read. I do remember mother trying to teach me to read about Dick and Jane before I stated school. I would hide underneath the big spirea bushes but she always found me.
They finally let the girls into another pasture. I watched the girls come up to the gate and there was one calf probably three months old lagging behind. He was on the other side of the pond and I was afraid he was going to swim across. He disappeared among the pears on the pond dump. Bradley did walk down to check so guess he went through. Also saw one of the girls come up with a tiny, tiny baby. So cute and he stayed right by his mother as they went through after the others. We ran Brangus cattle that were really big and had big babies so not used to sign tiny ones but these are really cute.
Quite day here- did some mopping ,washed some windows and sills and fixed a drawer. Stormy and I went to the mailbox and around to see if the girls had hay. They have three big tractors across from the MH , ready to harrow, I guess.
Time for David Muir. Have a good evening.

Ron…important dates are hard…

Ron, Happy Anniversary. Probably wasn't because anniversaries and birthdays are hard. Our 53rd anniversary and Charles' birthday are both coming up in April. April was always our favorite month.

no illustrations, just a good cover to set the scene:

Barbara, that looks interesting. Do you do the.book.covers along with writing the.books?

Barbara…how happy!

That's a great cover, Barbara. Makes me want to read the book, which is what a cover is supposed to do.
Sorry, Ron. DW and I were married in 1967 too. Our celebrations are pretty subdued now, but not so much as yours.

What a great cover for a children's book, Barbara!

I popped in to post an article about falls, but I need to comment on the book cover first —
Barbara - I love the cover of your book — it makes me want to go to that beach!
And here's the article I saw earlier about falls, some of it are things we already know, some was new to me, so it might be new to you. I liked the article, although I thought that the two people in the last photograph look entirely too happy that he's on the ground after a fall.
Falling can be risky. Here's how to avoid it and what to do if it happens

the cover was made by artificial intelligence,…. but the seal had a fin on his back, like the dolphin, so I had to paint it out. Yes, apart from AI, all my work.

Great job, Barbara. If you ever get into science fiction, you can put the fin back!
GG, I guess they are laughing off the fall because he isn't hurt, but it also looks like she's trying to help him up with her back bent instead of her knees. An appropriate caption might be "How to rupture a disc after your partner falls." Good article otherwise.
My SIL fell in the bathroom a while ago and got stuck between the wall and the toilet. Her daughter couldn't get her out, and they had to call for help. She was glad she was wearing a nightgown, at least. That could have been fatal if she lived alone! Falls are nothing to take lightly.

Ron Belated Happy Anniversary.

Good morning.
Iris— Enjoy your apron project. A sewing machine from Aldi's? That's the first I've heard of that.
I'm a sad about the closing of Joann's but they haven't really been a fabric & sewing store for years. They leaned so hard into decor and crafting that it was as if fabric had become a side-hustle. My local store had only 1/2 of the footprint devoted to all things sewing. This seemed to spiral on itself— as they brought in less fabric, concentrating on fleece and novelty prints it became what they sold, so they let go of quality garment and home dec fabrics which meant serious sewists tended to look elsewhere for fabric and notions. The last 5 years or so, I mostly bought thread, patterns and things like elastic or flannel for Christmas pajamas.
Ron— I'm sorry you could post the clip. I remember you posting a wedding picture and what a handsome and happy couple you were. Lou was a beautiful bride.
Little me— So you used AI to make the cover? It is bright and engaging. The people I know who authored books had the cover art provided by the publisher but perhaps that's changed or is different in kids' books. I know a they were disappointed a few times. My SIL has a murder mystery coming out soon. It's part of a series and I wonder if there will be a theme to the cover art.
Judith— Poe is an interesting choice. My dad read us Poe when we were little. If he came home drunk, rare in those days and usually a NYE or wedding party, he'd wake us up and read the Poe or Housman. It's only as an adult that I realized how odd this was.
Gothic G— She does look happy. Maybe she's the one who pushed him.
I remember the book fairs too. I don't recall much what I read but I was a kid who would read anything. My son, on the other hand, came home with posters and toys.

The only thing on my to-do list is swapping out mom's medication. She gets a dose today and tomorrow and then her PICC line removed on Thursday. It has been a long 6 weeks and I'll be glad to not have my day broken up by the need to get to her house during a specific period of time.
I took her out for a couple hours yesterday as she's not really been out much. I took her to Marshall's where she bought some fancy shampoo for thinning hair and then the Carter's Outlet. I was hoping she'd buy a gift for the upcoming shower, but she would not be pushed. She did, however buy a pair of adult Christmas PJs for herself on final markdown. Because of course she did. Mom loves babies and clothes. Carter's was right up her alley. She wanted to buy me lunch, but it was almost 4pm and I needed to get home and feed my people.
LOL, I brought DS a burrito bowl from Chipotle (his favorite) and DH and I went to a new sports pub that opened locally. The food was good and we got to catch the end of the Phillie's home opener. Neither of us is particularly into baseball, but it was an exciting 3 innings and the onion rings were spectacular. Homemade pizza tonight.
Be well-

Just a quick comment, hope to BBL.
GG, thanks for the article on falls. Many already know this but probably not all. My husband fell off a ladder in Sept '23 and broke his back, left ankle and right humerus. He is now mobility impaired - uses a cane or a walker but is still able to do a lot of things. His condition is permanent but I encourage him to exercise to maintain what he has.
I fell off the porch last winter. I had the dog on a leash and the leash caught on something and it pulled me off the porch. I fell onto a boxwood plant. No injuries but it was a wake up call to be more careful.

Morning, all quiet here gor.now. Sunny, cool and calm but high winds later this morning, storms tonight. See you later.

thanks for the falling article
we had annual book fairs at our grade school too…I had forgotten all about them
cleanint out files and shredding paper today

Good morning. That was a nice article about fall prevention, which is a topic that needs to be regularly addressed. Nevertheless, that slim woman won't be able to help that big man up. What is she doing?
Speaking of books, one of the seniors centers has a book swap table where I have gotten quite a few books. Now I just have to gather up some of my own books to swap back.
Carl, how is DW after the visit to the ER?
HB, I used to buy craft items from Jo-Ann's, but that was way before the pandemic shutdowns. I wonder if not enough shoppers returned after the shutdowns?
Judith, I will be filing and shredding today, also.
The weather has turned cold again. I had to turn on the heater last night. It's going to be cold all week. Brr!

JoAnn's was pretty empty last time I was there, and all I bought was a little bottle of "sewing machine" oil for my paper shredder. DW used to buy fabric, patterns, and embroidery kits there, but she doesn't do that anymore. I think she still has a couple of simple embroidery kits, maybe I'll learn to crewel.
Thanks for asking, Iris. DW didn't break anything in her falls, but she hurts all over. Her X-rays show degenerative arthritis in the right hip and knee, and degenerative disc disease throughout the lumbar spine with L1 wedging from a disc 40 years ago (caused by trying to lift a trailer hitch like the woman in GG's picture). The very slow shuffle gait is due to Alzheimer's and won't improve, so I now have a handicap parking placard, and a wheelchair on order. My doctor wants me to park at the back of the lot to get more exercise, but I think pushing the chair will make up for it. Maybe we can get in some real walks in the park now. I'm taking her to get a CT this afternoon, to check for microvascular disease. If I had a car as worn out as she is, I'd trade it in.
Walgreen's voice mail system has no record of my prescription refill request, so I'm going to drive there and talk to a human. It's a pretty day, 61 degrees F and windy (25 mph), so I'm going to play outside after I deal with the Rx. Have a nice afternoon!

Hello all,
Storms Monday missed us, (thank you Lord!) but today is very cool though sunny. Finishing up with my taxes and bonds today. Glad to have that done. Taxes for FIL are pending extension. And, no word from the Accounting Firm regarding the Shop or DH's stuff - but I have done all I can do. So, let that worry go.
DH has applied pre-emergence to the sod and is now out there cutting. Too windy for me.
The babies are fine. I tried to attach a video of the Grands playing "chase" with them but the file wouldn't go. Too bad, it was cute. They are a month old now.
I was supposed to have a Cardiology appointment today, but it got cancelled by them. Rescheduled for next month.
So, since I don't have any other appointments or grandkid birthdays this month, I'm about to plan a trip to Fort Worth, Texas. DH has never been to the Stockyards and has always wanted to go. Well, DH has never been anywhere for fun really. So, now is our time. But we'll take the car this trip and stay in a nice hotel. Truthfully, camping is ok - but…. A nice hotel, every once in a while, will not kill DH - though he disagrees. lol
HB, I'm glad your Mom's IV therapy is ending and you will get some time back. YOU deserve a vacation!
OK, up and off I go to get something done about dinner before I run a couple errands. See ya later!
