Nanny G that is crazy rain, I often wish we could share the water from all your rain. In the last 3 months we received 1/3 of one inch. I never thought much about living in a desert until I started listening to all of you talk about the copious amounts of rain you get.

Received two calls this morning, one from Senior Living, the other from VA. The lady from Senior Living said it’s still possible that a studio might be available for me till one bedroom is available. VA nurse wants me to come in this afternoon for a X-ray and pick up paperwork that Senior Living needed. By the time I get through with VA and go to the Senior Living, the availability should be known. If it’s not available, I’ll start looking at other options. Tired of this hot blankety blank camper!

    Good afternoon.

Lots of you have many things going on. Personally I think that's good. It becomes bad when all of your days are totally scheduled with various appointments. I don't like that at all. yesterday was our 49th anniversary. We did a lot of "remembering" which DH loves to day. We even went out to dinner - something we don't often do. It was a good day.

Ron what are your thoughts on moving twice? I guess you could only bring the bare minimum to the studio until and one bedroom apartment opened. I can't see you waiting around in a hot camper too long. Ugh.

Lorita, the snakes. Nope, nope and double nope. They just wig me out. I've seen plenty and the snake has seen me racing the other direction!

I need to get to the farmers market before everything's picked over. Back later to check on everyone. Let's be safe.

Aftternoon, lots of rain south of us, up to seven or eight inches, only a shower here but it's dark and cloudy. Bit cooler, too. I've stayed in bed this morning and watched tv.but am up now. Nerd to dry the clothes washed esterday. May go to the mailbox and check out the bridge Darwin says they finished.. I need to see you it because it sounds weird.

Thanks, Judith, I just didn't go far enough. I plan to watch on the 14th and 15th. The last owl I saw was a few years ago in the barn. It was a white, barn owl -beautiful and silent when it flew. It flew into a window in the barn , fell to the ground but got up and flew off.

I learned something today- always thought to become a billionaire you had to have 100 million. I checked and it is 1,000 million and 1,000 billion to become a trillionaire which Musk will become today. Something is wrong when some people are that rich and so many can't afford groceries or medicine. What would a person do with a billion or trillion dollars. All we need is enough to buy what we need. You can on!y wear one outfit at a time or drive one car at one time, etc. I'm happy to be able to buy cat and dog food and feed.for Billy and I. I wouldn't know what to do with money like that. Would any of you all?

Lorita, there is no way to responsibly spend a billion dollars, so I'd probably give most of it away. Remember a TV show called The Millionaire? The premise was that a billionaire gave a million dollars to a stranger every week, and we watched what the recipient did with it. One week, it was a man on death row. This was 65-70 years ago when a million was a LOT of money.

I am of two minds about June 14/15. I love stargazing, but June 15 is my wedding anniversary and I'm not sure I want to spend part of it staring into the dark.

Ron, I hope you get your apartment. The heat has no doubt run your mice out to sleep where it's cooler, but trailer life is uncomfortable otherwise.

I would give a big chunk to public education and re-instate civics into the curriculum. Local, state, and national.

Ron - I hope everything works out at the senior living place. A studio until a one bedroom becomes available seems like a good idea to me.

Judith and Lorita - the last time I saw owls was during lockdown. It was so quiet everywhere that they came out. I have a lot of photos of owls! 😄 I even saw some owlets on the ground. After that, I haven't seen any owls. I hear them, but I never see them.

If I had a billion dollars? I'd give almost all of it away. I'm with you, Lorita, you can only drive one car at a time, wear one thing at a time, etc. I just don't need that much stuff.

Most of my family are all teachers of some stripe, so I'm with Sweetwater too - I'd give most of it to public education. Civics for sure. I'd also give a chunk of it to hospice. I was so grateful to them when I needed them at the end for Peggy. They were so great with her.

I would give most if it to my charities. I have several that I donate to each month - for animals and diseases members of my family have dealt with. I wonder if Musk donates. I remember what Bill Gates said about him.

Ron, is your camper not air conditioned? Charles and I lived in an 8x30 travel trailer for almost two years after we got married and moved to the farm. Housekeeping was a breeze.

Carl, I remember The Millionaire. We watched every time it was on. Hard to believe it was that long ago. Anniversaries really bring back sweet memories along with sadness. It's been over 11 years for me and that's still true.

GG, I can imagine how cute baby owls must be. Would love to see one. It's always quiet here except for cows bawling and coyotes howling.- maybe I should get outside at night and look around.

    You all sleep well tonight.

MONEY???…I can think of a lot of ways to spend a lot of money. I think I would focus on education/scholarships.

I do not begrudge others for having more money than I do and I certainly do not know how they spend the fortunes they might have. I do know that vast sums are given to hospitals and medical research. Vast sums are given to all areas of science. Colleges and Universities building are donated. Museums are created and funded. Sports teams are owned and don't we all watch the games on our TV's via internet/cable companies created and or owned by individuals.

We have billionairs who have bought land just to preserve it i.e TedTurner and Robert Redford. Warren Buffet just donated 5 billion to the Gates Foundation ( a nonprofit fighting poverty, disease, and inequity around the world),

Regarding Mr Musk, yes he gives. One way is through The Musk Foundation. Musk Foundation

Grants are made in support of:

    - Renewable energy research and advocacy
    - Human space exploration research and advocacy
    - Pediatric research
    - Science and engineering education

What did Bill Gates say about Elon?????

added: Buffet drives a 2014 Cadillac which had hail damage when he bought it.

I'm back. I was exhausted after my trip to the Tar Pits. There was not much walking but I was still wiped out.

The excursion itself was very nice. Actually, the Pits do not contain tar, but natural asphalt. Apparently, unfortunate animals became stuck in the thick asphalt, died, and were preserved for millenia because the tar is a great preservative. I'm going to continue to use "tar" because it's easier to type.

This area of Los Angeles and all of Southern California was inhabited by indigenous people aka Native Americans. The Spanish, who had come to Mexico, built missions up along the coast from San Diego north to San Francisco. When other Europeans arrived, they thought the land was good only for sheep and cattle.

Eventually oil was discovered. In the process of searching for more oil, preserved bones were discovered in the murky tar. These bones were thought to be sheep or cattle bones. But archeologists realized these were fossilized bones from animals that had been extinct for millenia. The area was roped off and has been a paleontological site ever since. All around Los Angeles has been built up except for this area. The scientists are still digging for bones and remnants of mammals, birds, plants and seeds.

    Here are some photos.

There are tar pits all over the world, this one is the largest with the most restorations. Lorita and Judith, there is another tar pit at Fort Sill, OK.

This is "Urban Light", an outdoor sculpture exhibit at LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art). This entire area houses many famous museums, including the Petersen Automotive Museum, the Academy Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art, and the new Geffen Museum, on Wilshire Boulevard, now reachable by the Metro.

I have not good news about the Metro. We saw many enthusiastic soccer fans, many wearing green jerseys, traveling to the Coloseum to see thd game on jumbotrons. But the Metro has returned to being out of control, with people eating and drinking and throwing trash and litter onto the platform and onto the tracks, and playing loud music.

If any of your family or friends is coming here for the FIFA World Cup and will be riding the Metro, tell them to stay in a group and be careful. Parking at SoFi Stadium will be $200!

    Good morning,

Since the Studio I’ll be moving into is in the assisted living section, I had to have some paperwork from my primary care. Ended up getting a shingles vaccine and chest X-ray. The chest X-ray had “new scattered small nodules in lower right lung”, which I’m not worried about. I have a history of lung nodules and ground glass which always goes away. I already had a appointment set up with my pulmonologist next Tuesday, so this was good timing for visit with him. It’s comfortable here for the moment with all the rain coming down, think I’ll lay back down.

Good morning. The heat wave here finally broke. It's been hot and humid with threats of thunderstorms for days. We got the unpleasant weather but no rain. None. Zip. Maybe tomorrow.

It's been an unusually dry spring, and I've noticed that none of the local fields are planted with corn. It's unusual.

Lorita— You'll be happy to have the girls home, I'm sure. Last night on Clarkson's Farm, they were birthing calves. They're so cute as babies.

Gothic— I generally make dough at least once a week. I do a pretty basic dough. Usually based on "00" flour with about 1/3 whole wheat. And I do it in the Cuisinart.

DS insists on pizza on his cheat days. <groan> DH lived on pizza when I met him often saving a few slices for breakfast <hork> I am the fussy one; I will only eat pizza in the place where it was made. If I can't burn the roof of my mouth, I'm not interested. There's a great pizza place a few miles north of me that is just about perfect— they make a stellar pie, serve Coke products and have self-serve beer and wine taps. What's not to love?

Iris— Those are great pictures. I especially like the gulls. I always find them amusing even though they are the delinquents of the bird-world.

Nanny G— I was thinking of you and your goats last night. We were watching the new season of Clarkson's Farm (Prime) and Farmer Caleb was telling Jeremy that the goats needed to go in order to streamline the farm, but Jeremy and the entire production insisted the goats stay.

Is there a theme for VBS this year?

Ron— I hope a studio opens for you this week. The place looks lovely and it would be easy enough to move once the 1 BR is available. Maybe your grandson and a couple friends would help you out.

Eaglemom— Happy belated anniversary. Where did you go for dinner?

Judith— It's only 5 months until Thanksgiving. Maybe you should have left the flatware out. LOL, last year I only put away my Christmas China because I was having mom over for Easter.

Sweetwater— Yes to education. Civics? Absolutely. Actual American history? Yes please.

Carl— I'll be thinking of you on Monday.

What's happening astronomically on the 14-15th? Anything interesting?

    ___________________________________________________________________________________

It's been a quiet couple of days. Aside from mom's eye injections, we've got a lull in the medical appointments until the end of the month. DH and I have derm skin checks; that's always a fun date. I've got a chronic hive on the back of my calf that needs looking at and I could use some advice on the scar from my surgery.

Mom had been really compliant on her POC of late and then went rogue this week because she hasn't been feeling SOB. Grr. I went over to take her food shopping on Thursday, and she announced that she "was able to come off air for about an hour while she did some light chores". (FTR, when I got there the unit was puffing away in the living room while she was puttering about in her bedroom for 10 minutes) She was weirdly proud of herself claiming her O2 was 89-90. She lies to me constantly.

Yesterday it was about her cell phone. I called her twice with no answer, so I called the landline and she fed me some story about how she couldn't answer the cell because "it was charging". Later in the conversation it had become obvious that she'd laid it down somewhere and couldn't find it. I suggested she look on her bathroom vanity, the top of her dryer or on the edge of the powder room sink as I find her phone in those places regularly. When I look at her call recent calls, there are always several from the landline to her own phone. I'm thinking she needs a brighter case that would be easier for her to see.

I'm making sheet pan nachos for dinner tonight. Maybe some ribs tomorrow. I hope all have a pleasant day.

Morning, it looks weird here. The whole sky is covered with dark clouds - only light area is just above the.horizon all he way around. Looks like rain coming in for a while. This may postpone mowing and clearing out the poke on my north fence.

Iris, thanks for the pictures. I think it's sad that those animals were caught in the tar. Did they say how deep the pits are? I had no idea there was one at Fort Sill which is a long way from here. It must be similar, but worse, than quicksand. What an interesting trip for you, and us, thanks to you. Seems like I heard something about trying to bring back the Dire Wolf.

Ron, when we were getting Jack, Patsy's husband, into AL, our doctor had to see and check him out before admission. I guess to make sure he was okay.

They're in the process of removing a name from The Kennedy Center but they have a huge tarp obscuring the procedure. People were out there watching all day yesterday and already today. They want to see!

Good morning. The weather report here is humid, followed by humidity and heat! I so hope this isn't the trend for the summer.

Ron I'd grad that room while waiting for the one bedroom. You know what's best for you and the campers just isn't cutting it.

HB you'd ask about my besties DH and his surgery. It was to be a type of ablation, but it ended up being more. The guy is 61 yr old. He's had a rough recovery (and he's not a complainer). But almost 6 hr of anesthesia and your heart being worked on isn't a walk in the park. He can't get comfortable and when he does its little naps.

For our anniversary we went to a favorite Mexican food hold in the wall place. DH was wanting fajita's. He even had a cold draft beer and my margarita swirl certainly went well with dinner. It was a good day and evening.

I would be setting up foundations and donations if I had that type of money. I'd not want to donate it all, but rather set it up that the charities would continue to receive funds from the donation over many years.

The World Cup games at AT&T Stadium dominate the news. Roads closed or rerouted, hotels blocked off, etc. I can't image the money the police forces are spending on this. One friends DH is a motorcycle officer. He was taken off his regular duties and given mandatory World Cup bus escort duties. The only good thing is this will be a huge amount of overtime, the bad is that he won't see his family for the month of June.

    Everyone be safe.

    @eaglemom

I was wondering if it was an ablation. My late BIL had 2 and his brother recently had one. Bestie's DH had one that lasted a nightmarish almost 9 hours with 2 teams rotating in and out. At least someone came out every hour or so to update her. I'm not surprised he's uncomfortable and sleeping poorly. I hope that passes quickly for him.

Ooh, nothing better than a hole-in-the-wall family-owned Mexican place. Or a well-crafted margarita. I had a margarita Thursday for the first time in years. I didn't like anything on tap and they don't chill the white wines to my liking. It was awful. I think the bartender got distracted and forgot the Cointreau. It was kind of like cat pee. Her dad comes to visit her during happy hour when she works midweek which is cute but he's a demanding customer.

I think Philadelphia's first game is tomorrow. Even with additional service on the subway some estimates are saying it could take 5 hours to get everyone on their way home or to a hotel. It's only a 3 1/2 mile walk to the commuter rail stations and many hotels. I'd be inclined to hoof it.

    So much is happening now.

The FIFA World Cup is on! The US won over Paraguay, 4-1, at SoFi Stadium aka LA Stadium. Katy Perry was the pregame entertainment. Tickets were $1200 and up.

David Beckham received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in the sports entertainment category, coinciding with the US team beginning play in the World Cup. Beckham invigorated soccer in the US when he signed with the Galaxy in 2007.

Rod Stewart played his One Last Time farewell tour at the Hollywood Bowl, at 81, singing all of his songs. The crowd jumped up and danced and sang along with him.

I didn't grow up and go to school in California, so I didn't learn this about California history. California was its own republic for 25 days. Apparently, Mexico became troubled by too many Americans in northern CA, and made plans to get rid of them. The American settlers stormed the Mexican fort and declared California to be a republic independent of Mexico, the Bear Flag Republic. (The Bear Flag represented the numerous grizzy bears at that time.)

US Navy ships arrived and completed the takeover. The American flag was raised on July 7, 1846. However, this was the start of the Mexican-American war, that concluded with Mexico having to cede half of their national territory to the US in 1848. California became the 31st state on September 9, 1850. The Bear is still our state symbol.

One of the astronauts of the Artemis II that circled the moon, Victor Glover, returned to his high school in Ontario CA. He praised his teachers and encouraged students to find their own way in the world, they don't have to have it all figured out now. The school is naming their Math and Science Building after him.

The weather is clear but the surf is high. Flooding is anticipated in low-lying areas. Residents are urged to fill sandbags to protect thrir homes, to avoid driving on flooded streets, and to be extremely cautious about the beaches, they're very dangerous now!

    That's all for now.

Thunder woke me at 2 AM and kept me awake for hours, so I slept late this morning. I'm going to the sr ctr country dance tonight.

HB, the night of June 14/15 is the new moon. The sky will be dark if you're away from cities, and we are in the season when the northern hemisphere has a good view of the center of the Milky Way at night. Billions of stars, spread out like a highway in the sky. Judith posted a link to a description on page 5. I don't know how far you would have to travel from your home to find a dark sky.

I don't think I'm up for it on my anniversary. There will be another new moon on July 14, maybe I'll go then.

Carl, I would love to see the Milky Way but I don't want to drive out of town to do that. Maybe someday when I'm vacationing in the mountains I'll have the chance. I am sorry that you are having a sad time but it's understandable.

Iris, I enjoyed hearing about the La Brea tar pits and seeing your photos. Thanks for sharing!

Bryon came by.himself and worked four hours. Surely looks and feels better. Now I won't he worried about stepping on a snake He also cut up the Iimbs the tv guy cut and trimmed back a tree on the driveway.

Just got back from the mailbox and checking out the new bridge. There are tornado warnings up north and weather is on. Maybe they will subside in time for the game.

Lorita - I'll see if I can find one of my photos of the owlets - they were adorable.

There was a live stream on youtube of the workers putting up the scaffolding and then removing the name. My s.o. watched part of it, as did about 100,000 other people (!!!).

I hope the tornadoes pass you by.

Iris - great photos of the Tar Pits! It looks much the way I remember it (as an adult). The property is very different than when I was a child. It was a lot more "wild", as in, not as cleaned up as it is now. Still, I love that place.

HB - I can't do pizza for breakfast. I can do spaghetti for breakfast (and have, many times), but I can't handle the pizza.

I can't think about Thanksgiving being five months away, because that means Christmas is six months away. I need to have to have my short PNW summer before I contemplate being cold again.

I'm glad you had a quiet day.

eaglemom - happy anniversary! A favorite hole-in-the-wall Mexican place sounds great to me.

Carl - I hear you about the new moon and your anniversary. Waiting until next month is a fine idea.

My s.o. decided he wanted to go to wine country for his birthday (which is this weekend), so here we are in Geyserville! We went to Hanna right after lunch today and had some of their wonderful sauvignon blanc, among other things. Then to Mercury where we had a few other tasty wines. Dinner was at Diavola - such good pizza. Tomorrow we're going to Iron Horse, they specialize in sparkling wines. We'll head back home on Monday. Today was really relaxing. We're both just loving it.
