New
Hi everyone!!!! I am new to this site. My mom, I believe, is having some serious decline in her short term memory, and is demonstrating confusion. She does not realize that she has this problem. I need to get her to the Brain MRI, but she refuses. Any suggestions?

Can you flunk out of Geri-psych?
My DH has been in Geri-psych 3 days, and last night went on a tear. The nurses had to lock themselves and the other patients in and call security. Because of the Memorial Day weekend, they haven’t done much adjusting of his meds; I think they added an extra 50 mg of Seroquel. Do they ever kick patients out of Geri-psych?

Planning for hospice
I paid a visit to my parents yesterday and spent the night. My dad has been dealing with double incontinence and last night I observed my dad waking my mom in the middle of the night with a bowel accident and my mom had to change him and clean him up. My mom is exhausted and I recommended to my mom to accept hospice care…

Off Topic: Michael Ellenbogen's trip to Tennessee
Michael Ellenbogen recently returned from a trip to Tennessee and gave Judith and I permission to share his photographs. He saw the Duck Parade on Judith's recommendation and was an assistant Duck Master. Happy that he continues to travel.

Passing of family member - do I tell?
Hello Everyone - My uncle passed away last night after a brief illness. He was my Dad's brother. Both my Mom and Dad are in AL both under Hospice care… my Dad is in the later stages, my mom in earlier stages but had a TIA in April that has started the decline. My Dad doesn't know who I am, so I don't think he will remember…

Keeping Loved Ones Home As Long As Possible
My DH is still doing okay going into our 4th year of Alzheimers diagnosis. We have a 3 bedroom home. My daughter and 12 year old son live with us so there are no extra bedrooms. I would like him to be at home as long as possible and as long as I am able to care for him. He is 86 and I am 81. Physically we are both in good…

I'm concerned about DH medical care in MC
When DH entered MC in January this year he was using a Spireva inhaler to control his COPD. Since then, the MC doctor first changed him to a different inhaler and then discontinued that and started giving him albuterol breathing treatments three to four times a day. DH came down with bronchitis in March and was extremely…

When to make the next move
Hi there. I am caring for my bf who is 44 with eosa. We just recieved the diagnosis last October. Things have been fine except as of the last month or so there is a "him / he" (imaginary person) that goes into his room (where he keeps his clothes and shoes) that messes with them. We have him on Zyprexa (onlazapine) and…

another interesting but incomplete newspaper report
The Washington Post had another interesting article today, talking about a new website from the Alzheimer's Asssociation—called DICE—about strategies for caregivers to de-escalate dementia behaviors. Supposed to be the first of its kind—but it must not be up and running yet, there was no link provided to any such website,…

Move Mom in With or Without Her Furniture
Hello, my Mom recently moved in with me. She seems to be adjusting but she mentions some of her things such as her leather couch, a desk etc. I could make room for the couch, but it might be crowded. I’ve been back and forth on whether to have it brought here, a 16 hour drive away. Sometimes I think it would really help…

Hurt my back
Yikes! Today I was stooping over my desk and when I straightened up, my lower back snapped and a jolt of pain shot down my back. I took Tylenol but I don't have anything stronger. I'm scared because when my dad hurt his back, he couldn't get out of bed the next day. He had to call 911 to bring him to the ER and found out…

Marketing Senior Living-Big Article today
Lead article in the Washington Post this morning is about A Place For Mom--37.5% of their "Best of Senior Living" facilities have been cited for serious substandard care, and the reviews are manipulated. Cautionary tale about doing your own research. I'd post a link but am sure it's behind a paywall.

In the blink of an eye... (reposting)
Dear Forum Mates, Join me on my little walk down memory lane. This thread is almost 3 years old and reminds me of where we were in my beloved's progression at that time. We all got a little (or big!) chuckle out of some of the antics our LOs were able to get into "in the blink of an eye". This is a stress reliever as we…

New Member
Hello, I am a new member and I am happy that such a discussion group exists. My dad was actually diagnosed in 2019 with Alzheimer/Dimentia, but his symptoms go way back. He is getting worse and his agression spurs are now happening more often. He is 76 years old. My mom is the main caregiver. My sister and I try to help.…

I need someone to talk to
Hello all! I'm new here. Lucky me, right? 😟 My Mother-in-law had Alzheimers and passed many years ago. I now fear my husband is in the early stages along with adult onset ADHD. Me?? I'm losing my mind!!! He can't remember anything and constantly makes excuses for his behavior by saying things like 'Why should I remember…

Mom is constantly angry with my sister
My Mom was diagnosed with Alzheimers in the fall of 2022. She is understandably having a very hard time with the loss of her financial independence and is constantly accusing my sister of controlling her. We have POA and I tell her we're making the decisions together, but her anger is focused on my sister, who is the…

Refusing to eat/doesn't like food
I'm a part time caregiver for my grandma; she has alzheimers. We are at the stage where she doesn't like most foods. And even if we try to encourage her she will spit it out. Any advice? Things that have worked for yall? Even food supplements?

Tone Deaf Invitation
A couple with whom DH and I have been close friends for 40 plus years just invited ME to a small dinner party celebrating the wife's 80th birthday. The invitation spelled out that I should get one of my children to watch my DH and just come by myself. I am miffed and maybe even insulted by this request. Has this happened…

Grief and guilt after moving parents to ALF, how to deal?
Last month I moved both parents to an ALF. I did research in advance and found a nice place close to both their kids. Initially, I felt relieved. One month on however, I feel mostly grief and guilt and am surprised. Is this common? Mom has mobility issues and AD for nearly seven years. Parents now are 86 and 89. What…

Mom's in Hospice
Hello, so I please need some advice and support. Since we put mom in Hospice, my anxiety level has gone to the roof. I went back to therapy and am feeling better. I am struggling financially with my job, sometimes I make enough money to live comfortably and like now I am broke again and living on a credit card. I want to…

Brief Update on a good day
I've read many discussions on how our PWD can get combative over their driving privildges. I realize it's still early days, but here's how it's going. Per last update, brother was prescribed generic for Aricept a couple of weeks back. He can complete more of his sentences than before. He says he's feeling much better. He…

How To Balance Life
Hi everyone! Hope you and your LO’s are well. I have been having a lot of problems having a proper “work-life balance” for lack of a better term. My mom’s (60) diagnosis and required care takes up all of my energy, thankfully she’s still able to move around and shower herself and use the bathroom on her own, and those were…

Can others understand?
I think I know the answer… but friends and family are interested and care for me and my DH, but when they say things like “I understand, my mom had memory issues and I had to help her twice a week“ I realize they have no idea of what it’s like to be the sole caregiver at home for your life partner. We’ve not (yet) been for…

An Important Week in Alzheimer's Disease Research
This week there were three important findings regarding Alzheimer's disease: The first found that Alzheimer's disease is primarily caused by oxidative stress and that it potentially can be treated with a series of antioxidants. The editor for this group concluded that: "I anticipate that the OS (oxidative stress)…

My DH is getting increasingly aggressive and hard to handle
My DH is very restless and agitated, and always wants something to do. The problem is, when I can't go out with him - ex. at 6:00 a.m. today he wanted to go for a bike ride - then he gets loud and aggressive and says he will go anyway. Today he started for the door and said he was going. He gets lost in our apartment…

Bank account considerations
Just some general info that may help some. Sometimes being added to checking + savings account as signatory is more advisable than using a DPOA. If your LO can sign, they can be taken to the bank(or whatever the bank requires) + ask to have you added to the account. This is sometimes easier than dealing with a POA. Also,…
