I'm not hungry
Hello! My LO Mom lives with me and my husband and son in PA. After a recent bout with the flu, my LO is sleeping MORE and MORE. I don't mind except that in the past 2 weeks, she has dropped 7 pounds because even though I wake her for meals, she states "I'm not hungry" after eating about 5 bites if I'm lucky. I try to sneak…

How to convince LO to let home companion in the house
Hello, I've got 2 questions about home care: First, my dad has recently reached the stage where he needs someone in the house daily, at the very least to make sure he's taking his medication. However, he insists he's taking it and refuses help of any kind. I've been advised to tell him that having someone stop by daily…

Mom left bathroom sink running
Hello Everyone, It’s been a long time since my last post. Things were going well, but nothing stays the same with this disease. Mom is mobile and is able to go the bathroom on her own. I noticed several months ago Mom leaving the bathroom sinking running. Then Mom started to leave the bathroom sinking running with her…

Wants to be in bed 16 hrs a day
Mom was diagnosed 3 years ago and has been on Aricept ever since. If we have an activity that requires she be up and moving around (such as one of our small family gatherings) she can manage to stay awake and function almost normally the entire day. Some days, she will go for a short walk with me, take a leisurely ride, or…

Maybe I have finally figured this disease out
I have been trying to figure out Alzheimer's disease for nearly twenty years. It comes down to this very simple observation: "The inflammatory mediator peroxynitrite, when generated in excess, may damage cells by oxidizing and nitrating cellular components. Defense against this reactive species may be at the level of…

Helpo. So my dad is my mother's (has Alzheimers) primary care giver and has not been taking the best care of her. I know he's exhausted and depressed and is in very bad health. He recently had a fall and broke his ankle and is in rehab. One of my younger brothers is looking after my mom briefly when he's not at work but…

Bible Verse to Lift You Up 2/7/22
Only Seeking God's Presence, Nothing More ** Psalms 42:1 NIV "As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God." * me: Let's often make plans to visit with our Lord, just so we can sit at His feet and soak in His radiant presence. Some ways we can do this are through prayer along with reading and…

Dementia and family dynamics
Hello all! I recently found my way to the message boards and was glad to read the experiences of others. My dad was diagnosed with dementia in 2020. He is in his late 70's and I am 38 - It doesn't seem young in the grand scheme of things but I was not expecting to deal with this until later in my life. My mom passed away…

In over my head...
Hello! I am very new to the site and new to being a caregiver. My sister is coming to visit in 2 weeks to visit several AL and MC facilities in the area. Unfortunately my mom is willing to relocate one day and the next it's an absolute "no/you're forcing me" meltdown. Is there a way to help your LO make the transition…

Issues With My Mom’s Care Facility
My 83 yr old mom, with moderate to severe lbd has been living in a specialty care facility since early Jan. She was very adverse to it but we told her to give it a chance. It is very expensive and we are paying for it out of pocket ($18k a month!). Of course we were over promised on what type of care she would receive and…

Hospice / ombudsman
My advice for those of you placing a LO, put them on hospice before placement! Hospice will be a second set of eyes on how well your LO is being treated. Especially if they are on Medicaid. Also, get to know your local ombudsman. Yet another set of eyes!

Is this diagnosis and prognosis real? Should we seek a second opinion?
I've posted a few times now, the most recent being "How to respond to despair, depression, threats of suicide?" (https://www.alzconnected.org/discussion.aspx?g=posts&t=2147559727). My mom has been in the hospital for almost two weeks. The current plan to release her this Tuesday (which will be the two-week mark for her…

When LO Refuses Care Options
Hello! Our LO unfortunately says "no" when we suggest homecare services, adult daycare or MC. An attorney said our LO has the right to say "no", even with a diagnosis of moderate ALZ and LBD. We have no POA for our LO. The same attorney said our LO wouldn't be competent to understand and sign POA documents due to LBD. We…

Singing to our LO's
A member on another thread mentioned her singing Clapton and Winwood songs to her husband and it made me smile. So I decided to share my singing adventure with ya'll. Momma doesn't say much these days but she is aware of what's going on in the room, sometimes. I decided I'd sing an old hymn to her. She always sang at…

How to stop LO from opening new accounts?
Any thoughts, ideas, suggestions or experience you have had with your LO opening accounts without your knowledge? My aunt with early dementia still drives and will go to the bank teller to withdraw cash. Some times a lot of cash, in my opinion, but I rarely carry cash anymore. One day she closed her bank account with one…

crazy six days!
My 91 year old mom has been in a group home for almost four years. It used to be a pretty good place and then the best caregiver quit because of the toxic culture created by a few people in management. My mom really declined after they hired some very sub par people (I cannot call them caregivers because they don’t care!)…

Incontinence(23)
I wanted to share the recent situation with my mother. For the past 3 weeks she does not get up to go to the bathroom. During the day I urge her to go but during the night she doesn't. Up until 3 weeks ago she would go at least once during the night and also change her pull-up diaper herself. Now I find her bedsheets,…

We've hit a brick wall
It's been a while since I have posted and things are progressing. Two months ago Mom (92) was caught up in an $18 mil scam where she was to send $15,000 to the scammer who would then send her the 18 mil. She went to the bank and drew 2 checks for $7500 each and included a personal check for $15,000. In addition the scammer…
